  • Does anyone know if a text version exists for this amazingness? I'd like to perform it for speech team...

  • This is the most heartfelt Thank You letter to Beethoven anyone could ever write.

  • No Shane, you're an addiction.

  • @canucksfan25 Thank you

  • @charlysays04 Ode to Joy from Beethoven's 9th symphony

  • We were shown this in forensics (public speaking) class and I was in awe of how amazing it was. I get chills when he says The man got on his knees got music. People in the poetry section of the class are gonna try this but I highly dount it will be as amazing as this

  • wow.just wow.

  • @badboi741

Anyone that names them selves badboi741 must be completely and utterly gay. Learn how to spell loser.

  • my teacher showed us this in class, he gave a print out of the words first and we were all thinking it was just gonna be boring, and he was like we had to hear it to understand the real meaning. we were just like ya whatever, then he played it and we were like HOLY SHIT!

  • This is amazing! Love it!!!!!!

  • I would love to know if this was meant to go along with the beat of a Beethoven song... because how bad ass would that be?

  • @kyndrax That would be pretty awesome! and when he does the part about the Silence, they cut the music. That would be great

  • whenever I'm down about my writing, I listen to this and it helps me get back on track. Such emotion. Two lines in particular are incredible, he says "not good enough" with such emotion and "It was perfect. You see, the deaf have an intimacy with silence, its there in their dreams" Shane, that poem is absolute perfection.

  • I have probably listen to this about 100 times and it still takes my breath away.

  • a scoobidy dip dop dap i'm hip to this cat, he's speaking real fast and with Flavor so it must be profound as shit

  • @dio70neo

refer to reply i sent to badboi741

you know, you guys would really get along.

both of you are the most self-conceited, arrogant little pigs i have had the pleasure to scrutinize. Yup. you and badboi741 would be really REALLY great friends

  • that absolutely blew my mind <3

  • this sucks

  • @alienmode if you think that sucked then you dont know what art is

  • OH MY GOD. Incredible

  • I honestly cannot see how anyone can disslike this. I'm all for opinions, but I have never in all my years heard a poem read so passionatly and still have the words be so empowering. Shane Koyczan, you inspire me.

  • amazing NOT GOOD ENOUGH! lol

  • "this is my voice" is my favorite

  • Chills without fail

  • Saw him live. Purely amazing.

  • whenever i listen to him, i just want to cry.. its always so beautiful.

  • Amazing. that is all.

  • I don't mean to judge or anything, but what is the point of slam poetry? It sounds like someone giving a lecture, with more emotion. I mean it's poetry, but... I don't know. =S It's like rap, but with no beat. I'm sure this piece of poetry means a lot to most people viewing this video, and you can trash talk me if you would think it makes a difference, but from my two cents, I don't find this really different than song writing. But you rarely ever see this kind of reaction to songs... Hmm...

  • @atlanteantapir Hey, the beauty of music is that everyone can find the music for their own tastes, right?

  • @atlanteantapir Slam poetry is art, an expression of the human condition by the individual in an attempt to break from the isolation that we are all familiar with. It has no purpose, no "point", other than itself.

  • @atlanteantapir If you can't find such reactions to songs, than you have never seen someone performing a song live, have you? It's everywhere. I find reactions to poetry to be less than that of musical performances.

  • @atlanteantapir Song writing is a form of poetry. And I have witnessed many people cry to songs

  • @atlanteantapir any performance, is a performance and the point of a performance is to send a message to the audience, and the point of it is to convey that message in the best way possible, hence slam poetry.

  • Awesome spin at the end.

  • Cocaine is a helluva drug.

  • 360 FTW!!!

  • Good enought for me to LIKE IT

  • Good crap every time I watch this I get shivers down my back

  • watched this in english class today........ it made my day :] Shane Koyczan you are amazing!

  • Holy fucking shit

  • this guys got guts

  • His singing voice is amazing! Not the best poem I've heard, but it is very good.

  • @Zeke011 please tell me what the best poem you have ever heard is please!!

  • of all the slam poetry on the internet this is the best

  • ....I guess this guy is good.

  • Help! I need a poet similar to Shane!

  • This video deserves billions of views, and billions deserve to view it.

  • this man is amazing! I first heard this from my friend on the phone and absolutley fell in love!

  • He came to my school. Amazing!!

  • I just made a video out of this audio. Come to my channel!

  • Thumbs up if you listened to Beethoven's 9th after this?

  • superB

  • Terrific

  • wonderful

  • Genius, goosebumps and almost a tear brought to the eye.

  • -THIS- is soul

  • I am not poetry kind of person, but damn that was good.

  • wonderful

  • Woot. This guy could tell me to kill all jews, and I'd probably do it!

  • this shit is dope.

fuck the hater Shane, you rock. keep it comin'

  • Thank you, Providence (:

i love this man and ive practically have this memorized. I watch it every day (:

  • Beautiful!

  • I am in a creative writing poetry class at college and the professor showed this video to the class. I am so glad he did.

  • @Judg3m3nt i hope you succeed in what you are doing. this is what i want to do, and its not easy to find a carreer in such a field. I bid you my prayers and good luck.

  • I am so jealous of the way this man can express his emotions. His words became alive... just like beethoven's music :)

  • I have but... (breath)... ONE!... (breath)... QUESTION...

Who the FOOK are the 8 people that clicked on dislike?!

    ... Thank you Providence

  • i want to be good as him!

  • @DeathDelays232 It starts with grammar. *I want to be as good as he.*

  • @deathtoconformists Well I'm working on it, majoring in creative writing should do the trick.

  • @DeathDelays232 Haha. I'm just effing with you, but true that. Good luck!

  • @DeathDelays232 You can't teach what Shane's got. It has to be in your every breath. No amount of words and marks and feedback guarantee the ability to bring people to tears like he does.

  • It feels good to be woken up . Thanks Shane.

  • Shane Koyczan is a god.

My only regret about this piece is that he is in such a hurry, and there is no polished version. none the less, a beautiful piece.

  • huh this is poetry? I guess I've been doing it wrong all this time...

  • Thanks Katie for turning me onto Shane, i'll see him in Vancover or Seattle if he slams in either place

  • I write peotry for my high school and i never feel like I make the passion that Shane blows away. He's amazing.

  • he sings really good,.

  • I wish it hadnt ended.

  • it's intense from the beginning, but the farther you get, the more better and passionate it becomes.

it's AMAZING what one person can do with just words and voice : )

  • @mudanat it's latin and the Ode to Joy from Beethoven's ninth symphony

  • what's the name of the song he's singing in italian?

  • @mudanat I believe it is latin not italian, but the song is Ode to Joy. Very good piece if you ask me...

  • I believe he might have been less awkward if he was allotted more time but as for this particular piece I believe he might of rushed due to constraints of competition. I feel he still did a amazing job and put on a solid performance the awkward sense added another aspect which depending on the listener could have helped still a amazing job and one that was well done!

  • Wow. I thought that Shane's We Are More was stellar. This has given me goosebumps on top of goosebumps. I can't wait to see/hear/feel him at VFMF next month.

  • omg

  • @cassylee17 i met this guy after he performed at my school

he made a joke about liking cows and he called george bush a doush

  • Shane just makes me realize how much more i can push myself with my art.

  • awesome

  • You are a wizard of words. An enchanter with the english language and I only hope, that some day I can move crowds the way u can.

  • EPIC, i am a Shane Koyczan super fan

heres to literall talent, not being famous for being famous

  • horrible

  • @CanadianSillyGoose & Sliceofcheesewithegg

    Lawl.

  • Mamamama lolaposacaka crew ne hoimonlo?

  • @ Sliceofcheesewithegg and CanadianSillyGoose, What does his physical appearance have to do with what he is saying? He is a genius that neither of you will ever comprehend. You are the type of person laboring over life and what it means to live, yet you will never know anything beyond what you see with your own two eyes. You will never learn anything that isn't shown to you. You will never have a truly original thought.

This man here has beauty beyond measure, and you cannot tell him different.

  • @Sliceofcheesewithegg ...says the guy who doesn't even know grammar and spelling. If you want to call someone else an idiot, you have to use punctuation, spell correctly, know the difference between "then" and "than," etc. Epic fail.

  • @soccerhulk17 what, your gay?

  • @soccerhulk17 well said!

  • Since he fat, he is an idiot. you see, fat people have smaller brains than normal people.

  • @CanadianSillyGoose

Get over it! He is talented. I am fat too!

  • effing wow.

  • He says it's Providence at the end.

  • Is this Seattle, 2001?

    It looks like it...

I was in this theatre that night ....

    he is amazing!!!

  • This could make Beethoven cool, sell him. Not that he needs it in Philadelphia, where at least the weekend concerts sold out a few seasons back. Of course he and his colleagues could use some help in the CD/download department.

  • he writes as if he knows Beethoven personally. love way he evokes emotion and injects it into every word he says.

  • So an I, he give me hope asshole.

  • i first heard of him at the Olympics as well. now if find myself watching what ever i can find over and over.

  • That fucked me up. Stunning. Brilliant.

  • This gave me chills

  • I never heard of him until the Olympics, fantastic!

    He's put on a few hasn't he.. :S

This man's voice is totally hypnotic. So moving!

    Thanks for sharing this!

  • I love Shane, he is amazing!!!

reply to a comment: I don't think he is justifying the abuse, just saying that it made him who he was and perhaps we wouldn't have the music we have today without out it. Just speculation, we'll never know unless we ask Shane...

  • it almost seems as if he's justifying the child abuse that beethoven endured...while I love the descriptions of the music, i can't condone child abuse.

  • If that's all that you got out of this then...

I think you missed the point.

I think he was stressing the fact that in spite of being deaf and abused he still became a musical genius that to this day is unmatched.

Music was his escape from abuse...

  • I go to his school

  • Brilliant!

  • Wow, you are so smart. Idiot.

  • Make me feel alive

  • Excellent!!!!!!

  • Hey BasterdMan1 Shane Koyczan is one of the sexyist men alive because he has a firm grasp of the english language & uses it to make people think & feel.

While you on the other hand probably uses "lol" in verbal conversations giving actuall sound to the death knell of your brain cells.

  • well put!

  • @smegoffgit Damn straight, I'd hit that.

    Love; Birdie

  • @smegoffgit what if I do both of those things O.O

  • Whew man such power absoulutly stunning!

  • If words can change this world...

then our fate lies in yours.

Thank you. For making me think

  • this still make me cry, awesome

  • I'm doing this for a forensic's piece in school. My interpretation of it was less...well, impassioned. It came to a point where he spoke much too fast for comprehension. But it helped knowing which points of emphasis to use for when I perform it. I always get chills when I read/hear this piece. thanks for posting this!

  • That was amazing. So capturing, and just brilliant!

  • simply amazing. (:

  • ..........**awe**

  • Beautiful.

  • Yeah... It's ode to joy.

  • Yowza. my chills.

  • i'm ignorant, but what song is that by beethoven he sings? i've heard it, i just don't know the title

  • not sure but i feel like it was ode to joy with words

  • @nacho862

It's called: "Ode an die Freude" which is German for "Ode to joy". And it's the 4th movement of 9th symphony of Beethoven. To be precisely:

Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony no.9 - in D minor op. 125 - IV - Presto, allegro assai

  • This man and others like him, such as taylor mali make me want to continue in this life. they speak from their hearts and tey use emotion to feul their desires. these men and women known as slam poets are my heros

  • Holy crap. this is real good.

  • *silence* Whoa.

  • wow he is good

  • I honestly think anyone who doesn't think this is amazing has the inability to see beauty displayed directly in front of them.

  • I doubt anyone will believe me, but Shane is actually my cousin.

I think he is absolutely incredible.

  • AWESOME

  • This man is a genious.

  • I would like to just say for the record that I A am in love with him and B he is a genius

  • Wonderful. I got chills the entire time. I love poetry, but I'm not that much of a fan of listening to it. But this is wonderful!!! Just plain beautiful. Go him.

  • I don't know what it is, but I got the chills the whole time too.

    Unbelieveable..

  • Well... The people who hate this are not good enough!

  • you're just jealous. your comment is...Not Good Enough!

  • Pretentious? How do you figure that?

  • this is coming from the same user that favorite's MadTv.

  • That's a bunch of hypothetical situations you set up there.yes thank you for the awesomely creative alias.I recognize its insulting, yet alliterative properties, and I appreciate them :) I was merely attacking the fact that you've favorited an under par television show. Aside from the fact that all your videos are completely shitty, I only wanted to attack your taste in videos. lol I know my videos are terrible, but the more you defend yours, the more insecure you seem about how shitty MadTv is.
