Phil Hill won the first heat in a Chapparal, and finished second to Parnelli Jones's Lola in the second heat. Hill won the overall, followed by Jim Hall. I think the smoky crash was Ludwig Heimrath, but I can't tell for sure, nor remember precisely.
This Super 8 footage was shot by my father at Laguna Seca on October 16, 1966. It was the first Can-Am race at Laguna Seca. The first minute or so is the ABCD Production Race, then the two heats of the Can-Am, separated by a Jaguar parade (those old XKs are now probably worth more than the CanAm cars). I am the little boy in the striped shirt who is seen briefly in Heat 2.
