Went to school with Chris. Was drawing in class when the rest of us were working! :P
Good work Chris, been following what you're up to for a while. Some fantastic work and you truly deserve to be noticed. Best wishes and see you around!
The Calling is profound and stirring and cuts into our preconceptions of origin and evolution, not only of ourselves, the human creature, but from the inaugural onset of time itself, the planet.
The imagery used on the single channel video by artist Chris Boyd is sensual and emotive. It imbues a sense of our physical entity and existence, where we have come from and ultimately leaves one with a sense of reflection and retrospective.
An awareness of the moment, now, as if standing on the precipice of contemplation of where humanity is going. It is both sexual and spiritual, the fundamentals that drive life forward. It is provocative, yet intrinsic, and touches on the core elements of human consciousness and perception of time and space and our roles within the socio-historical edifice.
As I watched the writhing and cascading bodies, genomic re-reproduction of digitalised forms, I saw my heritage, myself and my progeny in that one moment.
It captures the viewer, but gets inside and holds them at that moment where time seems to stand still. The split second of awakenings and realisations cognitive, as 'I think, therefore I am' (Descartes), E = mc² (Einstein); Eureka (Archimedes); 'Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds', Oppenheimer. The sentience is embodied in Boyd's visualisations.
I thought it was thought provoking, disturbing, beautiful, mesmerizing...really pulls you in leaves you left in wonder. Thanks for sending it Chris, I'm truly impressed.
This is totally amazingly Fabulous ... OMG I cant believe some of the effects and the impact is huge. Fast moving and mind boggling. 20 Stars I wish I could give.
The Calling is absolutely amazing, I would like to see it at a large scale. The Sound design in all the reel is brilliant. The fluid movements are all gorgeous.
Plus I like the fact he reinstates work and labour and that his art attains its meaning through the means of its production. I remember seeing something about the eating bugs clips but forgot its significance, something Kafkaesque. Definitely worth keeping an eye on, he's going to be big look what he's accomplished as a whipper snapper.
The eating bugs video was on tv where the critics were buzzing of it and the fact that they were real and from cambodia. Not alot was explained so I dont really understand it.
It might look like it has the flavour of a conceptually discursive work but at the end of the day its a showreel, an advert for his great ideas. It was probably edited quickly with a loose framework and implied thread of narrative and without the meditations and rigorous intellectual articulation that might go in one piece.
The bug eating clips are quite distressing and angst ridden but is apart of the cathartic experience. Your employment of hard-disks, consciousness and memory in your vocabulary is brilliant. Like a self portrait with your tools of your trade. Its full of isolated introspective characters delving deep for insight and inspiration for mark making.
I love the contrasts of scale from your sea of undulating nude people to the intimate fleeting beauty of the lone woman in the field and melancholic maternal moments. A personification of dawn? I would really like to see that video as I think these clips are gorgeous.
Although this is a showreel it could be a work of its own accord. You have covered a range of emotions in what seems to be an implied narrative. A meditation on the your creative process. There's a rhythm of tension , release, dark and light as if brooding and executing work. The cloudy space where ideas spring from is similar to the beginnings of the universe.

super cool , my favorite is video art that is figurative , you just seem to eliminate all aspects of sexuality , was this a conscious decision .

Is this the same Chris Boyd as the malware researcher "Paperghost"? Just curious.
twooffour 2 years ago
Hi. No this isnt "Paperghost". I believe his field is internet security not visual arts.
hope this helps
boydism08 2 years ago
He's studied visual arts / cinematography and is actively involved in that scene though, that's why I thought that.
Apologies :)

Brilliant Boydism, It is totally breath taking and I hope it catches peoples outer perceptions and inner perceptions fast.
You have captured "THE CALLING" beautifully and I can say I will be a follower of your now for the rest of the time I have to spend on earth.
Good luck my friend, you deserve The Noble Peace Prize for this work.
Incredible, This is rare talent indeed, artists emotions, perceptions in full unity of the viewers perceptions and unity.
