This song is so different in french, I sang it as a little child. It goes "Je suis tombé par terre (I fell on the ground) c'est la faute à Voltaire (it's Voltaire's fault), le nez dans le ruisseau (nose first in the gutter) c'est la faute à Rousseau (it's Rousseau's fault)" It shows that Gavroche doesn't care about the ongoing conflict (Volatire & Rousseau's legacy), he's just a poor child who prefers to sing rather than cry until the very end. He was born in the gutter and died in it.
