  • What's the big deal about zooming while filming? It's traditionally bad practice anyway, "Jaws-style" special dolly-zoom effect notwithstanding. As for why compact cameras don't do it, it's because they have a varifocal zoom lens. It means that the camera cannot maintain focus while zooming - it needs to do a quick refocus after you change the (optical) zoom level. Obviously this would be noticeable on a recording. Let me know if you find a compact camera where this isn't the case.

  • Hello,

For the quality of the video.

    The better is a CANON IS 110 or a SONY DSC-T900 ?

Thank you for your replies !

  • @prodesign3r canon ixus 220 hs is better..

  • Optical zoom is optained by physical movement of the glass lenses. this could be considered as "real" zoom, while in digital zoom the integrated chipset just resizes the already "finished" picture, like you can do at your computer when your zooming into a picture in photoshop with the "lens-tool". the big disadvantage of digital zoom is that it's limited by the resoution of the camera, which in this case with 12 megapixels ain't too bad at all. in older cams it was bad, though. Greetz.

  • yeah good explaination.

i tried to explain this to my friends but they didnt understand me.

    wtf.

    lol.

  • hihi so which kind of zoom during video filming is better? because i am comparing between ixus 110 and ixus 990, it seems like 110 uses digital zoom while 990 uses optical zoom (which some sites say that it is a bad point). Is that true? I am undecided on which of the 2 cameras to buy..

  • As far I can tell from the German Canon website both 110 and 990 don't have optical zoom while recording video (at least in HD that is). For the 110 I can tell for sure because my dad bought one some weeks ago. I guess no Canon compact cam offers optical zoom while filming, due to battery power. Maybe the motor for optical zooming takes to much power together with the immense data processing of filming in HD. I'd choose a cam by minimal focal lenghth provided rather than by type of zoom anyway.

  • While recording only digital zoom can be changed, the optical setting remains fixed.

  • Czan you tell me what the differences are?

    I'm not familier with this...
