I think it might have something to do with the completely mixed emotions the audience receives from these two completely different pieces. The spine-chilling effect of the films Horror genre mixes with the soothing feel of the upbeat, happy some to create a sort of creepy feeling. This is obviously brilliant when it comes to such things as 'The Crazies', which if you've seen it you know what I mean.
@ryann45 thats an exellent question for example on Fallout 3 and New Vegas they have oldies and classic ones....they use alot from The Ink Spots a 1930's band, The Andrews Sisters, Frank Sinatra, and the game is a little scary not really but in a way. Same with The Crazies it's my favorite movie and Fallout my favorite game. They both have a connection scary yet peaceful at the same time.
