if you want to change what the strings actually are, all you have to do is open the .strings file with notepad and edit it then save it when you are done. It is as simple as that.

and if I remember correctly there was a free program that all you need to do is use it to type what text you want and it will transfer it to the slider, you can even choose different colours

Okay, to all the people that can't find the Themes folder, this is what you do. When he refers to ROOT, he does not mean the /private/var/root file that it defaults to. You need to go to that first slash. What the directory will look like when you are finished navigating is /private/var/stash/Themes

All you do is goto folder options and change it so you can see the file extension then change the ".strings" to ".txt" and edit it, then change it back to ".strings" and continue following this tutorial.

You can create a .strings file. Create a text file (i.e., .txt, .rtf, etc.) and (on windows) change the file extension to a .strings (you need to edit some preferences to do that) or (on mac) right-click and select get info, then change the file to a .strings. Some text formats will add a bunch of random crap onto it, which is why it's better to go with something like .txt as opposed to a .doc or .docx file

You do essentially the same thing, but you have to use the Mac's Terminal program to access your iPhone vs. WinSCP.

Google how to use Terminal to access an iPhone and from there you can follow these steps to modify the same files.

You can download themes that will change the arrow on the slider to different things from winterboard. As far as doing it manually, I would imagine someone would have posted a video as to how to do it on here somewhere. I would do a tutorial vid, but I just don't have the time...

You cannot edit the text unless you access your iphone's file system via WinSCP or iPhone Browser and alter the .strings file. Since the iphone doesn't have a very good finder or text editor, you will have to use a computer for now...

Sorry I meant. In my root folder the only folders are library and media and then in the library folder there is no themes folder. My iphone is jailbroken and I am using a theme via winterboard. Would I create a themes directory in the library file and then copy the strings folder into that?

You need to find the folder on your phone where your winterboard themes are stored (i.e. the location where the *.theme folder are) Once you find it just follow the process in the vid and put the file path in that location.
