there are a few options tho; you can use a skyline gearbox, but that's seriously overkill unless you are going over 700hp, also there is fixit boxes, but the Barra gearkit is by far the best. stay away from quaife, terrible gear kits

5 speed; straight cut gears but still has synchromesh so its just the same as a MT75 standard box just a little noiser

The diff will handle it fine but you are right about the gearbox. My Escort is putting out 450bhp and the diff is doing fine even after a good thrash. I've gone through 2 gearbox though. Next one will be a R&D 6 Speed.
