this was some game,my dad was at this match, that was when football was football,no money grabbing, unloyal pre madonnas back then, then capitalism kicked in,and the country went money mad, stab you in the back for a xtra penny, fuck modern and wot it stands for
Awesome Nite at Anfield, you can tell the strong scouse accent in the crowd when they sing, today the accent is not so strong is this down to to many woolies in the crowd now...?lol.
@TheMerseyBoy - I was there right in the middle of the Kop. When that Fairclough goal went everyone seemed to just fall over. Grown men were crying and laughing at the same time. It was the most unbelievable atmosphere. The only problem was we celebrated too hard in our local less than a mile from the ground and I got banned for dancing on the window ledges. I was 17 at the time and it was the first time I got barred from a pub.
I was there. Just 15 at the time too. The Kop was heaving hours before kick off. This match, and this atmosphere will stay with me til my dying day.
Football has changed, so we'll probably never see the likes of this ever again. Sad really.
Sometimes in life everything comes together at once. The right, people, the right place, the right time. On that night in '77 it all came together. Magical !!! It really was.
Magic just magic stuff!!! I been to 6 european cup finals with liverpool(only missed rome in 77) you can not beat stuff like this,st Etienne played a big part to make it so good, home and away
support like this is what makes Liverpool a class apart. Man united are pretty much the same but certain other clubs will never have fans like this no matter how much money they have.
Here the fans are dragging them to full time, just as they did in the '05 sf against chelsea. Contrast that with Chelsea barca sf.Chelsea were 1 up with seconds left but you could have heard a pin drop at stamford bridge. same when they beat us in the sf, their fans only made any noise at the final whistle.
As an unbiased Spurs fan I can confidently say that Liverpool are the greatest English football club there has ever been, and even though Man United are close, they are still (even now) in second place. However, they're getting pretty fucking close, so let's have another European Cup this year, even if you don't quite make the league. Muchos Respect.
Great night, just shows you what has been lost. Went to Anfield regularly from '78 to '84, used to get the B&I ferry over from Dublin. Lost interest altogether, with the ticket prices, lack of atmosphere etc.
Still brilliant more than 30 years later, great club great nights. Was on the Kop that night, unbelievable stuff, sadly never to be repeated. Allez Les Rouges.
And acouople of american businessmen managed to convince everyone that they will "Respect the history and herritage of Liverpool" then announce that they plan on demolishing Anfield!...
Anfield must be preserved for the same reasons Stonehenge and The Colloseum must be preserved.
Richysking, If the americans do build a new stadium then I will start to panic. They are already £300,000,000+ in debt through loans with £30,000,000 interest every year on top of that. Building a new stadium will put Liverpool fc £600,000,000 into the red. Every Liverpool supporter needs to make their voice heard..... GET THE AMERICANS OUT!!!!!
i only saw this game on tv later that night, but have never, ever forgotten it..... you could tell, even watching it that way, that it was an exceptional event. it almost seemed that the atmoshphere was too intense to be contained by the tv set and was bursting out into my living room. one national sports reporter later said this game was the most exhilarating and emotional sporting spectacle he had ever attended!1
It was the second leg , we had lost the first leg 1-0 away and Liverpool had invited Don Revie (the current england manager , i beleive) to travel with them , i always remember him saying after the first leg 'liverpool....were magnificent'.
was there that night on The Kop. I pretty much got the stuffing squeezed out of me as the crowd would surge forward and I'd be crushed against a barrier. I sweat like a pig and probably lost 50lbs. Probably the greatest night of my life.
SISIBAR..Can you read this?..ASS have KILLED the atmosphere at most grounds..No more Roker Roar or Lions Den,Millwall Roar etc...NO MORE CHOICE....YOU VILL SIT!!
I too was in with the St.Etienne fans. Most had green wigs on and kept singing "Allez les verts"(go the greens),which was also spelt out on the scarf that i had swapped."Oh what a night". Y.N.W.A.
... it's a pity that Sky TV wasn't around back then so we could see about 20 different angles of Fairclough's winning goal and hear Andy Gray screaming Yeeees you beauty !!!!! Davey Fairclough, 'tickaboo son, tickaboo !!!' But of course Andy Gray was still only a young player himself at this time - Villa I recall. This game deserved a better commentator than friggin' Gerald Sinstadt though ... God I hated him.
Wow I would have never thought Saint etienne's fans would have been so loud and proud in the middle of Anfield, I mean this Anfield!
Totally agree with you guys, even though I was born 27 years ago, I will always remember that special atmosphere coming from the terrace, the Kop, the sweating and noisy crowd surrounding you. I had the chance to live that before they re-built Geoffroy Guichard for the 98 World Cup(saint etienne's stadium).
I was in the Anfield round end amongst the French fans , and deafened after they scored , they had these aerosol claxons , my ears were ringing for hours after . Didnt really hear the Kop. !!
... I've just been trying to explain to my 20-year-old son that the gates were locked at about 6.15 for a 7.30 kick-off and the singing and the atmosphere was like this clip for more than an hour before the match !!! Nowadays the stands are still empty half an hour before kick-off. Yes, Chelsea 2005 was fantastic, as were many other European nights at Anfield but this will always be the best. The first time...the terracing...the atmosphere from 6pm onwards...many reasons, many memeories.
Leaving the Kop that night, you knew - you just KNEW that we were going to win the European Cup that year.
Borussia MG, FC Zurich, Dynamo Kiev ... it didn't matter; after this amazing night it was our's I remember being fucking knackered and drenched in sweat after all the swaying and singing and shouting. You felt as if you played the 90 minutes with the lads.
listened to this game live on radio two aged 11 and begged my mum to let me stay up to watch the highlights on sportsnight. once upon a time there was a game called football and it belonged to people like these. awesome. now you can sit down a read a book it's so quiet.
I was there that night on The Kop. I pretty much got the stuffing squeezed out of me as the crowd would surge forward and I'd be crushed against a barrier. I sweat like a pig and probably lost 50lbs. Probably the greatest night of my life.
OMFG, my eyes were watering as I watched this video. My 2 favorite teams, Liverpool playing MY team Saint Etienne! No money in the world can buy such an amazing game and Kop. If you pay attention, you can see some SaintE fans with a sign "Allez Les Verts" Bravo les gars!
(lol @ the nurse giving cpr to the random dude, lol) Allez SaintE!!!
Thousands of em pal , most of them swapped scarfs with us at the end ..they sang ' ave ave saint etienne ' to the tune of ave maria .There was a small bunch of us in the middle of them , about a dozen , it was like being at an away ground at times .
Right at the end of the clip you can see a nurse helping a fan, no doubt crushed by the swaying mass of humanity, and eveyone just walks past. Thank goodness for all seater stadia for all seater stadia.
oh THANK YOU for this, I was on the kop that night, an unbelievable game and experience, the French photographers were taking more photographs of the kop than of the game!! St. Etienne were no mugs but that Liverpool team were just the best
Someone got hurt? I see a nurse is taking care of someone on the ground. Maybe too many people!

sisibar, all seater stadia is what is killing the atmosphere at games.
We need to bring standing back. They use safe standing areas in Germany and it works fine there, no reason why it can't be done here.
Bring back the atmosphere of the old Kop.
