Yeah "Eventually" as in when they stop soaking out peoples money and really actually give out the real good technology but they are afraid anything might keep us from going to work or getting the poor little slaves hurt.
I see no practical use of learning how dragonflies fly other than for the sheer fact of gaining understanding. For anyone to try and replicate nature in such a manner would be severely inefficient.
@goutman Perhaps they caught a dragonf... no, no... they couldn't possibly have done that. There's no chance in hell anyone could catch a dragonfly and attach markers on its wings. Nope, it's a mystery. How on earth could those markers have gotten there? God must have done it!
@George19881988 wow really?:) wow thankyou for this no no i really mean it. Its amazing scientists can attach markers to an insect so small and fragile without damaging it i just wanted to know how it would be done.
Wait a minute someone stuck TINY MARKERS on the Dragonfly that was TRACKED by a computer? I think that in itself is more amazing that creating a mathematical model of a Dragonfly's wings.
Who stuck these markers? Who created such Markers? How small can they get? And how powerful/accurate are they?
@toomuchskin They're probably just dots, a camera looks at the dots and a computer goes, ooo it's a dot i will remember where it is :) Nothing too special I think. Probably some triangulation going on at most.
tiny winged vehicles mounted with tiny cameras- all this science of biological flight stuff is for military/ espionage/ covert operations- thats where the tax payers dollars go
mostly, yes. But also for escue missions like to find people in a crashed building or so - thats an important civil role of those micro-drones in the future.
Now why would anyone risk millions for a robodragonfly to spy at some insignificant character with a utube account? This channel seriously need to upload a new vid about the science of holywood writers screwing peoples brain cells or something.
Not too special - these very same simulations have been done for 10 years now on 2-wing insects, birds, and fish. My lab has been doing these simulations for 4-fin robot fish for 2 years now.
@palmisano Oh I'm soooo great. I've doing these animations for 10 years on 2 winged insects, birds, etc. And yet, in all that time, you just couldn't manage even 1 four-winged creature. Pathetic. Yeah, keep up the great work on your lame 2 winged critters there. That's really going to help the tiny-winged vehicle industry. Loser.
@LeafVillItachi Meaning for robotic drones. Scientists are turning to nature for inspiration for efficient designs. Helicopter blades my be necessary for larger aircraft, but there's no reason the smaller need to be restricted.
well it is good they are finally doing research that might actually help with something. I could see sometime down along the road this kind of technology being used to develop better aircrafts, the more we learn from animals, the more we will learn about technology.
We should focus on all aspects of science... Everyone saying stuff about the cure for cancer. It's possible that what they found here may lead to a cure. A medical doctor is different than an insect researcher.
@Justin9Noble If we are better at war, using advanced war machines, then we are better protected against the enemies that want to destroy your values and culture. I've once heard that pacifism is a philosophical system that can only exist because people fought, killed, bled and died for the right and freedom to practice that philosophical system. Don't be naive, like most are, and understand why we have wars. This doesn't mean you have to like it though.
@TheMathKing Pacifism is the principle of non-aggression and unneeded violence. Since usually it's the invading forces which attempt to destroy the independence or sovereignty of a state or nation. The opposing forces are usually the ones who fight for their state or their nations independence or sovereignty. However fighting for sovereignty and independence is not the same as fighting for freedoms which is what you seem to believe.
@Slug99 By that definition of pacifism, what I say is certainly wrong. I am going with a more naive definition that people tend to take which is "Pacifism = no violence at all". Also, I think that if you assume, axiomatically, in a core set of values and want to continue practicing it, you have to be powerful enough to stop others, with other values, from trampling over you. Also, the desperate and unfortunate sometimes wage war to get by, and we need defense (and charity), there too.
@TheMathKing I do not agree that military might is needed to maintain a stable state, at least not these days. Most states have stopped waring in the same way they did before, meaning waring to spread political influence. There are still cases of it happening, one big example being the US who still engages in invasions of regions and then installs a new state, Iraq and Afghanistan being the most recent ones. Most enemies of states are guerrilla soldiers, against which normal warfare is useless.
I'm just here to comment on the title...

@Justin9Noble a rather pesimistic view of the world you have there. Here is just a few things they could be used for:
Surveying our planet and others.
Fly into ruined buildings after a earthquake and search out the injured and traped.
Explore small spaces in ancient ruins unexplorable by man.
Fly in swarms over natural/manmade disaster areas to gain valuable realtime data for rescue services.
Getting upclose to study wildlife without alerting them.
So maybe open your mind a little!
