Great gems: "ya know, like, i'm a spoiled brat" | "yeah, like, i'm going into the muzik biz" | "yeah, like, um, i goxt $70K to repay, but i'm going home for some quality time with the folks." uh huh, you mean you're gonna live with mom and dad well into your thirties. suckers.
I graduated in 2009 with roughly $110k-120k USD in student debt at 3-7% interest. Due to my saving/spending habits I have saved enough that net-net I owe just $60k .. At this rate the debt will be gone in 3 more years. The system works it's just a little scary if you're not in the right major . I did computer science UCSD
You have to try to get that much debt. You can save obscene amounts of money doing in state-public tuition, applying for fin. aid, and not spending money for social things.
god i have to say that is the dumbest think i ever heard some one say after college "yeah im 200,000 dollars in debt i hope i can pay it off ' i'd be pissed
The last guy was unbelievable. Spent 180K on a bachelor's degree and is looking to spend more so he can become a teacher?! Are you kidding me?! His life is already over. Why is our society so intolerant today? There used to be a time you could screw up in your early 20's and it wouldn't in debt you for life. . .
PEOPLE GO TO COLLEGE TO WORK FOR A SUPERVISOR WHO'S MORE LIKELY AN ASSHOLE. FUNNY THING IS THAT A COLLEGE DEGREE IS THE NEW H.S. DIPLOMA. ASK BILL GATES. PEOPLE ARE UNCHAINED SLAVES.
Poor poor Ian, and I mean that literally too. $180,000 dollars in student loan debt and he is going to graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania to major in Education? Good luck! There is no money in education, except if one can get Amy Gutmann's job.
I would love to see a follow up of this guy to see how he is doing.
I'm a Columbia alumni. My tuition was $17,000 per semester. I graduated with MS degree. I've been unemployed for 2 years. Now I have a mountain of debt. I threw away my money and youth to study. Now I can't qualify for welfare, food stamps, unemployment. I'm fucked. BTW I'm loosing all my stuff, and i'm going to be homeless. Don't be a sucker sheeple! Through tuition hikes--You're paying for the pensions and entitlements and lining the pockets of politicians. Thank you and merry x-mas.
Can't believe that these people are so happy, I'd be screwed with so much debt on my shoulders. When I see this, I'm grateful to live in Germany, were we have 0- around 700 US$ fees/semester, depending on the state. I've got some debt, around 7000 US$, for 5 years of studies (BA & MSc). Luckily, not with a greedy bank, but from a national loan that you don't have to pay back unless you're earning a sufficient amount. FREE EDUCATION (or at least affordable one) should be made a HUMAN RIGHT!
Wow.. So much debt. I live in Scotland, United Kingdom. As Scotland has a Devolved Parliament it voted against Tuition Fees and abolished them in Scotland. I don't pay a penny for going to College or University or any Higher Education course.
@hbrtmran How so? Even in a recession the Scottish Government can still afford free Higher Education. Its all about how a government spends its money and where their priorities lie. Im not seeing how my children or grandchildren will foot the bill for my free education. I mean in taxes we pay in between £48-£52bn and only get £32bn back and that covers all devolved services to the Scottish Government including education.
Education is a human right and should not depend on a persons finances.
Uni means nothing, I have a B.Bus Marketing (Hons), Grad Dip in HRM, and now half way through a MBA, and yet i still work as a shop assistant at 40yrs of age on the very bottom minimum wage. If you are thinking of going to university, STOP, do a trade, you will earn so much more money.
"If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." I would certainly chose ignorance than having 100k in debt. That quote doesn't apply anymore. An education doesn't mean one is intelligent.
@ferrari4sale, I agree wit u. Jus b.c u have a college degree does not mean ur smart. It simply means ur educated. Look at George W. Bush and John Kerry. Both went to college and both are ignorant and stupid, but they are educated.
Talking about the average person here not G.W. or John Kerry. Going to college doesn't make you less ignorant if you are ignorant to begin with but it does open a substantial amount of opportunity.
The mortarboards these graduates are wearing now have a new name as they are now being born by a new class: the "Debt Serfs". Perhaps we should now call mortarboards by a more descriptive name: "Serf Boards".
@jlwade3 --- try to get out of your mind that college is some big rational entity in which the noble goal of teaching young minds the philosophy and skills for tomorrow's world...
It's a business, they want warm bodies to fill the class, and pay lots of tuition. Colleges are like any other business , in that they compete with each other and more money means a greater ability to compete for customers. Even if kids aren't qualified, college wants you - or more precisely your money.
@maggso You ask: Why are are laughing at being so much in debt (rather than crying)? I propose 2 possible reasons: 1) Graduation Day is considered a "happy" day, especially if family members and friends are there.
College is expensive, but I still believe its worth it. "You Have A College Degree, Now What?" was released last week. It addresses many important issues facing graduates.
@vanessanicole21, jus b.c u dont go to college does not mean ur ignorant. That in itself is an ignorant statement. Many people can do well without ever going to college. Many millionaires never went to college. Look at Bill Gates. He is a multi-billionaire and he is a high school drop out.
@BallinNQnz get your facts right..Bill Gates dropped out at Harvard College. He dropped out after his junior year in college, so the knowledge he acquired in those three years was enough for him to make billions
@110301839 yes but Bill Gates had the vision of mass marketable personal computers. Plus, he had a wealthy attorney father to support him regardless, a luxury not everyone has.
We are talking about the average person here. Bill Gates is not the average person not to mention he dropped out of Harvard not high school meaning he was smart enough to get it and do good in school there for 3 years. Can people do well without going to college? yes. Do most without a college degree do well? NO!
@typhoon535, most rich people got rich not because of college but because they were good business people. Donald Trump got rich by being a real estates developer and u dont need college to get into real estates. Many college grads do well with jobs that have nothing to do with their major. Watch the segment about college on 20/20 and they will show u why college is not needed to be successful.
Are you slow or what? For the last time Donald Trump, Bill Gates and a bunch of other millionaires are not the average person! Keep living in a fantasy world that you are special and going to make millions, statistically speaking it's just not the case. And for the last time - does college guarantee success for the average person? No. But it sure as hell opens the door to a lot more opportunities.
@typhoon535 it does open the door to a lot more opportunities, but not for everyone. if you're an underachiever then it's not gonna make much difference. If you want a nice job then you need to have good grades, else you're just gonna have to find jobs that doesn't require degree. so even though college is good, it's not for everyone. plus if you're and underachiever and don't go to college you can work in the meantime to make money and you won't be in debt. just my opinion.
I got news for you most people in the bracket of $80,000 - $300,000 all went to college and have advanced degrees. In the below $40,000 category magically there is a lot more people who never went to college over those who have. In the above $300,000+ category is almost exclusively people with advanced degree such as CEOs, doctors (an anesthesiologist with his own practice makes in the millions per year), investors and so on. A few exceptions are present in this category but they are exceptions.
Of course they got scammed, they were expect to get to well paying job when they got out of college only to found out the hard way that there is no job availabe to them once they got their college degree.
But DAMNN!!! did that guy have 210k dollars in debt?? haha wow, he's dead meat. If he was going to be a doctor then that would've been ok but a teacher? lol man your a done financialy for life lol.
