I now have 20,000 miles since installing the new motor and have since repaired the oil leak. The oil leak was coming from the oil pump interface between the pump and the block. Only use Loctite 574, and not the Permatex equivalent, to ensure a proper seal. Loctite is what the factory used.
noticed car clatters in low idle. mine did that. with the engine off, rotate alt pulley. if it spins freely for a 1/4 to 1/2 turn then stops, it is your harmonic balancer.
ya I have the same problem with my 88. Its a (or a bunch of) bad lifter(s). My suggestion would be to get some used ones. The origional kind that is, not the crappy new ones they sell now. When people replace them, they are not all bad but they usually replace them all. You can tell the good from the bad by pressing your hand on the little piston inside them, and if you can move it with just your hand, its bad.
maybe its a broken valve seat. just kidding. I would suspect lifter tap at first too though. Sucks that happened :( i have 924s i want to get a 944s2 or just a newer 944 regular model when cash allows. mine only has 85k miles now
I need to take video of the damaged engine block, piston and head.
I am currently rebuilding an engine from my parts car and should be installed soon. I did some polishing on the throttle body, intake ports and manifold. I an excited to feel the gains from the polishing and the new 4 into 1 long tube header.
What happened was the hardened valve seat broke and fell into the combustion chamber. It totally destroyed the engine by eventually exploding the piston and blowing out the cylinder wall. The cylinder wall had a 3" X 3" chunk blown out of it. There were only a couple things salvageable from the old engine.
It has been seafoamed and ATFed. I suspect the hydraulic lifters have failed. These are the junky hydraulic lifters Porsche now sells. Don't ever buy them. I have had to replace "new" lifters at only 6000 miles due to failure.

I have about 5000 miles on my new motor. It runs well although I have a small oil leak to repair this winter.

Does anyone here know where to get new 944 lifters that aren't crappy?

Annoying, yes. Dangerous to longetivity? Can't be, cause mines done the same thing for 80000 miles now. I love this car!
