  • this is the new orleans i love

  • Beautiful! =)

  • its much better now

  • I tried to ignore some of the directly and INDIRECTLY-made comments about how race made the difference in how much nicer of a Mardis Gras this was in contrast to to today's celebration and I must say that now-a-days everything has TONS more culture than back then and it's not just about TITS! Without some FESS in the background, M/G INDIANS making war, and the ZULU (of course), this looks like just another BLAND POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE ROUTINE! No disrespect to MindsiMedia; good footage.

  • Thanks for posting. What's remarkable to my eye is the almost complete absence of black faces in the crowd.

  • @Mancuso64 Thanks. The lack of blacks has been a topic that a lot have commented on over the years.

  • @Mancuso64

New Orleans is a southern city. Blacks celebrated in their own neighborhoods. When I grew up there, no Black bands were in the parades and the idea that the Zulus would parade on canal Street was inconceivable. Few white people ever saw the Indians because they didn't wander outside of Black neighborhoods.

  • @Mancuso64 What's remarkable is that they are all mostly french. =]

  • @Mancuso64 How is that remarkable? Give me a valid answer without being dumb.

  • @LeeloDaLyricist - Is there any need for your rude remark? I think it is quite remarkable (look the word up) that there are no black people in the film because New Orleans is a city full of black people. Is that easy enough for you to understand? I wasn't offering an opinion as to why there were no black people in the pictures, just an observation. I fail to see how that can be construed as being dumb. Before you ask... I've been to New Orleans (pre Katrina) Try not to be so dumb yourself.

  • @Mancuso64 It's the segregation. That is why Zulu became such an important parade, although earlier in the morning on Tuesday it was the parade that the African American/Black population was able to enjoy with out fear of being hassled. We have to remember how strongly segregation played a role in society (and unfortunately still does).

  • WTF happened for the 24th?

  • Happy Mardi Gras, Ya'll!

  • Very different from today...

  • GREAT ERA!

  • When the French founded New Orleans they pronounced Orleans the same way it's pronounced in France. Have we've been pronouncing it wrong since then? That might be why there are 3 or 4 different ways to pronounce it now.

  • What a terrific video! Loved that no matter what decade, people still come together and have a great time during Carnival. Thanks for taking the time to share the video.

  • @monawillo Thanks for stopping by Bon Temps Roule!

  • Isnt This video quality way to good for 1941 ?? The people and buildings look from that era but The video quality is remarkably good for that time , no ?

  • @jasoncarby Yes! It's some of the best early color footage I've seen outside of Hollywood

  • @jasoncarby Well, Gone With The Wind and The Wizard of Oz was made in color in 1939. There's also WWII footage in color and the original footage of the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 was in color

  • @jasoncarby Film has been high definition since day one, but it has only been until recently that digital technology has been able to extract lots of detail out of film. As a matter of fact, you can get sharp HD footage from film gauges as small as 16mm and 8mm. It has to be stored away from light and kept in a cool place. :D I can't wait to get my 16mm and Super 8 cameras fixed and shoot footage with them. XD

The film used here was taken care of, which is why the quality is so good. :)

  • back in the day americans weren't obese

  • I think the baby at 0:10 is cute! :D

  • If they only knew what would happen in Hawaii 11 months later....

  • Cool video. Thanks for posting. It's always fun to look back. To include my two cents, 1941 was 69 years ago. Things were different. There was always "depravity" and there will always be. But I do think that things have gotten out of hand. Who's to fix it? Our sons and daughters will have to deal with it because WE CAN'T. It's just the way of the world. Kids do wilder "mischief" now than 69 years ago. They used to play with a ring and a stick; now, can't live withouth their Nintendo.

  • you want to know what happened? drunk tourist idiots that don't truly know the meaning of Mardi Gras, thats what happend.

  • Mardi Gras was great back in the 70's and 80's when I was a kid and it was still our little secret. Now it's freaking Spring Break...

  • Well dressed civilized people enjoying themselves. What happened? This is another video from the past that depicts a stark contrast to the present illustrating keenly just how far into the bowels of depravity society has fallen.Clean well dressed civilized people enjoying themselves. What a concept. What happened? This is another video from the past that depicts a stark contrast to the present illustrating keenly just how far into the bowels of depravity society has fallen.

  • Well now it all depends on what the camera is pointed at. I could go out today and find large crowds of well dressed people enjoying themselves. Just as I'm sure that in 1941 there were plenty of scenes of open depravity going on but not so many cameras around to record the moment.

  • On the surface what you say makes sense. However it i very wrong, you would have a real hunt on your hands back in the 40's as the depravity you probably like was not tolerated by the general society. You would have to go into the seediest of places and i am sure you could find some. In terms of general society you would be very alone...

  • There's all kinds of depravity always has and always will be. There's the depravity that individuals dwell in and you are uncomfortable with public diplays of individual depravity. Then there is the institutional depravity that your type is always willing to ignore or even dwell in your selves. In 1941 you still had in America the land of freedom and equality institutionalized racisim. against black people, women & gays. You fake Christians are always to willing to ignore this kind of depravity.

  • Now I don't know about you but all I know of what real life was like in the 1940's is from what I've read and heard because I wasn't alive. I'm willing to bet you weren't either. But I do know this much people are as depraved today as they were in the 1950's that's how far back I go. It's a lot lot more in the open a less repressed as it was back then. The real depravity we should ALL be worried about is in our governments and institutions that control our finance. That's depravity. True enough?

  • Reverendjim was a reference from the old sitcom Taxi. I agree with you more than you will ever know to the regard of corporate graft, greed and lobbying. However I am against the left too. No problem with gay people at all, the women thing has gone too far, its a joke now and as far as the black situation go's all i can say is I do not draw a distinction, we are all the same. However, I think we need to a dose of old fashion public morality; human depravity belongs back in the closet.

  • But it is the right being AGAINST the left and the left being AGAINST

the right that is the problem.

Government has kind of become like Clint Eastwood in For A Few Dollars

More. And we the American people are like the two gangs that control

the town. Clint's character had no loyalty to either side & was

just looking to enrich himself while undermining both sides. Public depravity needs to be on display, exposed for what it

is a shallow pool for people that are out of control.

  • @MindsiMedia We need a third party!

  • where are all the negroes!?!

  • It's 1941! The country had NO EQUALITY!!!

  • right, and we are well on our way to succeeding in THAT, *scoff* *snort*

  • LMAO! There will never be EQUALITY as long as the world is run by God's MISTAKE.......HUMAN BEINGS!

  • yeah lets have god even us out

  • Don't take it seriously! It was a JOKE, Honey! ;D

  • All hail New Orleans!

  • Fabulous ! Absolutely Fabulous !!!

I've captured the other ( silent ) video. This not only has music but is edited superbly........ particularly the footage of the street-maskers after REX.

    Superb!

I also note: Carnival, whilst enjoying and suffering many changes, is essentially the same !

God !!! Thank You for letting me be born and letting me grow up in New Orleans !!!!!!!

    ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

  • Thanks much for your kind words. It is a beautiful piece of footage that I thought needed to be shared. I was lucky enough to find some public domain tunes that fit the mood. New Orleans was/is a great town I was only there once, not for Mardi Gras, and still had a good time.

  • This was indeed a very enjoyable video and, as a student of Carnival history, most enlightening.

The Rex theme for that year was "Gems Of The Arabian Nights".

  • It looks a lot more organized than what it is today. But for the most part, not a lot about it has changed from the looks of the video.

  • dido

  • well the first song is George Lewis. Whats the second?

  • Thamls for watching.

  • Looks cleaner and more wholesome than today's sleazy New Orleans streets full of drunks, perverts, and bums.:P

  • I'm sure the producers of this film were more interested in presenting the more wholesome aspects of the Mardi Gras celebration. The idea that in 1941 there were no streets full of drunks, perverts and sleazy bums is silly. In those days facts like that were obscured and not exploited. Also due to the vast explosion of media capabilities in the past 60 years there are just more points of view available to people nowadays.

  • very good point.

  • Tsubahi, have you even been to N.O.?

  • Yes, back in 1987.

And it was DIRTY, smelly, and disgusting with all the porn shops almost everywhere, too.

You can even smell puke in the air, too!

  • I'm sure lots of places are different than they were 22 years ago. Quit being so negative about something you have no knowledge of.

  • The second sentence wasn't so necessary.:P

  • How very very delicious

  • no tits for beads:O

  • its amazing when u think just about everyone in that film is now dead .

  • And we are all going to be dead one day, too.:(

    Enjoy it while you can.

  • Got glass half empty?

  • Wow.

The whole Internet is crawling with pubescent babies, even with clips as old as this.

    Sorry I even posted here.

  • Ah but you came back.

  • Shut your pie hole, little boy.

Astonishing you even had half the brain to post a clip so old it makes your grandfather look like a kid.

  • Welcome back yet again and thank you for your well thought out comment.

  • Isn't that the truth. I can't read these post without feeling like this country is raising a generation of imbeciles. It's really depressing we could sink to this level of discourse this quickly. Does anyone else find this scary?

  • It's a sad fact of life that we live on a planet composed of highly evolved people who through self discipline try to raise themselves up.And lazy people who take comfort in debasement and corruption. They respond to fear and anger and are always looking for someone else to blame for their lot. More sad than scary.

  • Not really.

  • white people march like godzilla chasing them whats the rush lol

  • haha, white people are awesome :) I saw the 2008 mardi gras video and I thought "geez these black folks march slow." Different ways I suppose!

  • The killer must run from the killer barker. Not nalts doing the stunts!

  • haha that was definitly the funniest thing i have ever seen i have never luaghed so hard in my life like that hahah thanks guys ....

  • 00:52

    drum major LOL

  • Alem de ser uma raridade isto e fantastico e me fezrir , Thank for sharing

  • ugly

  • Still kicking Jindal ass!

  • nice, too bad no audio. also. mardi gras is only one day, fat TUESDAY. all the rest is carnival.

maybe no blacks because of the kkk cross in the background.

  • sounds nice

  • saw no cross - and even if there WAS a cross you're just speculating. Cut out the anti-white commentary. Blacks were only 9% of the entire population back then. Public celebrations weren't catered to them like today.

  • "Catered"??? Nothing is "catered" to anyone today. But yes, everyone is able to participate and enjoy the celebrations. As they should be.

  • That' your opinion; of course Juneteenth, Black History Month, Martin Luther King Jr Holiday, and various Afro-" " festivals across the country probably in your locality as well as mine do not cater to specific groups...well again that' your opinion and it i mine that you are willingly ignorant not to notice.

  • I didn't see a swastica anywhere, but yeah, racial hatred and ugliness was rampant then - far worse than now.

  • OOoooOO lala that was a good one... haha i almost fell off my chair from luaghing haha ... ahhhh im still luaghing at that one tooo FUNNY [=

  • I caught 9 pairs of tits in this vid.

  • Nice catch!

  • 9 months before Pearl Harbor, Pearl Bailey was 9 months ; )

  • Thanks, Mike. I enjoyed watching carefully for all the marching clubs. Important document!

  • nada ke ver

  • Mardi Gras is AWESOME!

  • Where are all the black people at? I thought New Orleans was supposed to be "Chocolate City".

  • lol, they were playing in the band.

  • Time has changed...where are the black people?? oh I forgot 1941

  • LG2KOOL is stupid

  • i don't know about too much of where and how the human beings decended from, but if you scroll the movie to about 4:44, the mexican guy on the left either has a cigar or a real fat ganja blunt that he is about to smoke

  • It's a cigar... and it really isn't that big.

  • This is great history. It looks like they were parading through the French Quarter at that time.

Also, no bead throwing back then as far as I can see. Love NO!

  • Just got back from Nola and I have to say Mardi Gras has not changed much. I had a Ball and can't wait to go next year!

  • How far we have come... :)

    in the wrong direction.

  • Everyone always NEEDS to feel like the 1 and ONLY victim. Fucking lame =( Discrimination has been and ALWAYS be a major part of society. Not just race/sex/Financial. Everyone has to realize that most "IMPORTANT" arguments come up to blind us from what the fuck is going on. Think of the bigger picture. We only know what we ourselves are doing, we have been tricked into thinking we know more than that by fucktards that simply "Think" they know more.

Please everyone chill and....... THINK diff.

  • Now white people all of yall know that it was yall that were on all fours, climbing the mountains and swinging from trees in Europe.

  • "Now white people all of yall know that it was yall that were on all fours, climbing the mountains and swinging from trees in Europe."

Not all of us; the Greeks were building the Parthanon and creating civilization.

    DO IT KNOW!!!

  • @anthonyhelms15

No,you'll just get your ass beat for thinking that becuase you're white, you can just disrespect a black person and treat them like shit, you racist motherfucker---and you will have deserved it---ha ha motherfucking ha!

I mean, white folks got to do whatever the fuck they wanted to black people, including kill them and get away with for the first 350 years we were brought here, so karma's a bitch if you want to start some shit in that direction.

  • Psst.

You're making black people look like animals. All right, so some white guy said something nasty to you. Be a fucking man and disregard it.

What, he hurt your feelings? Shit man, did you have to piss in a blacks-only toilet? Go to a second-rate blacks-only school? Been kicked from a library because blacks weren't allowed? No? Shut the hell up, then.

Black people won their rights through peaceful methods. Violence will do nothing for you but make you look like an ignorant child.

  • Oh,fuck you,N&C---all that bullshit in the media about people supposedly rioting turned out to be just that--total and complete bullshit--it was just what they called urban rumors. And ANYBODY who dosen't have access to fresh bath water for 5 days damn days is gonna stink, you fukcing idiot! Why the fuck are you acting like Katrina was a white/black thing? EVERYBODY down there suffered because of it, so how dare you say some nasty bullshit like that,as the white people were above the black folks

  • AND OBSERVE.......not a SINGLE set of beads being thrown.....very interesting....

  • they are throwing beads...watch again. you can see them untangling them at 3:54 and not just laving them but downright chunking those bad boys to the way back section...

  • There was LESS debauchery and alcohol in 1941.The country had not turned it into a drunken orgy yet....remember the Roman empire! It fell hard

  • wow I had cheese under my nutts in 1941.. thanks for reminding me..

  • Beautiful !!

  • Seems like the frame rate is off... too fast..

  • thats how early films were filmed. the fps is relatively low which gives you the appearance that its too fast.

  • 1941??I was still living in my last life``

  • gross!

  • Wow! Almost 20k views in 24 hours!

    Nice one, Mike!

  • I myself being korean prefer not to use the race card but still whites make up the majority of the population. The affirmitive action I believe is flawed and yes there are some minorities who use it for their advantage but beyond that it is a reminder that others who are different still have a voice. But, only the end result really matters. If we were to get rid of affirmitive action would it backfire or give everyone opportunites? That is the question.

  • Wow, that was as fun as watching a dust particle float in the air in your room while your neighbor is blasting techno music.

  • change the music to a thumping dance track and this would have looked like it was filmed just a few years ago.

  • bfdgh色妃色法

  • look how decent those people were/ now people cant even control themselves lol

  • People back then looked so prim & proper...Thank goodness I don't have to wear a suit & tie & the Fadora hat every day makes me look old. I'm a jeans & T-shirt kind of guy.

  • nice!!

  • WOW shit has changed!

  • Statelybird3 you're an absolute illiterate who doesn't even understand what evacuation orders mean. The Friday before the Monday when the hurricane hit, the President got on t.v. and told everyone to leave New Orleans, that the damage would be catastrophic. The mayor of New Orleans , Ray Nagin , told them to leave as well, but as a local leader , did nothing to move the hundreds of school and city buses into the poor areas to get the poor people out. Ray Nagin was reelected because he was black.

  • Oh, and I guess white leaders are never re-elected because they're white either. Honey, I am not illerate, and I know what the fuck evacuation orders mean. The fact remains that NOBODY expected the damn levees to break, and I've read things saying that every time NO was evacuated and people left, nothing major ever happened, so they got tired of leaving and decided to ride it out--just like the people in Florida AND Oklahoma do every damn year, but no one calls THEM stupid for doing that.

  • You asshole..... all humans are descendants of monkeys

  • Comment removed

  • statelybird3, since when do they evacuate Oklahoma in hurricane season? lol...

  • suits and ties wow .

  • the fighting hukills

  • Oh really? How the hell do you explain those poor white folks in the Appalachian mountains that ABC just did a special on? I don't see nobody saying that they are lazy and stupid for being poor and white and that they just ought to move the hell out of the mountains. So how the fuck do you explain them, you racist bitch ass piece of shit? There are black teachers and cops where I live, you know-nothing asshole. Affirmative action dosen't even exist anymore--it was outlawed 2 years ago.

  • good affirmative action was a useless program anyway. people of minority races will get a job as long as they can do it "decent" while a white man aplying for the same job will be turned away because the company is afraid to turn away the minority and be called racist. when really all they want is the best worker.

    affirmative action is a joke.

  • No, affirmative action was needed back in its day because there were a hell a lot of jobs a black person would NOT be hired for, no matter how qualified they were. They sure as hell could not become CEOS of any corporation, that's for damn sure. AA was created to stop that racist discrimination, which was going on in this country UNTIL the 1960's---and it still goes on,it's just harder to detect. Funny how it never seems to occur to people that maybe a white person ain't qualified for a job.

  • affirmative action was simply implemented to "even the playing field".It gave QUALIFIED ppl who actually have done their footwork and paid their dues opportunity they would not normally have due to institutional, overt disadvantages or involuntary discrimination.Don't pretend racism ,sexism, ageism has not and does not exist. Not to say everything boils down to those "isms" but c'mon the reality is some ppl simply discriminate for those shallow reasons

  • Let's assume most white people discriminate. So we assume this puts minorities at a competitive disadvantage. Now we "level the playing field" with affirmative action. But, not every whitey discriminates, though affirmative action would clearly discriminate against them. Two wrongs, no right. No one chose to enter this world and I refuse to be held accountable for things that happened before my existence. Pride in things you do not choose is wrong. Accepting this is the only cure to said "isms"

  • Look,ignorant-ass bitch---a lot of people didn't leave NO because they're BEEN through a thousand other hurricanes and left, and NOTHING ever happened to the city. The last time the levees broke in NO was in 1927----so NOBODY expected the dams levees to break simply because it hadn't HAPPENED in so damn LONG, you fucking idiot.

How come NOBODY ever calls those white people in Florida stupid for staying behind when every damn time a hurricane hits the coast? And they do it EVERY DAMN year!

  • now it's just a bunch of fucking monkeys running amok and shooting up the place.

  • Back before it became a liberal run welfare city

  • Its like a college homecoming parade.

  • I'd like to be able to travel back in time just to tell those tell those racist old pieces-o-segregationist-shit that, not only will black men marry white women in the future, but that one of them will in so doing will sire a President.

  • not the point of the video.

  • Great vid, Mardi Gras has changed alot

  • Not the point of the video to YOU.

It's the first thing that i noticed.

  • I prefer a military parade at any time instead of this....

  • I think I saw The Village people, lol, gays have been definitely the costume extradonaires since the dawn of time.

  • So it appears the people of NOLA had some class back then.

  • amen to that random spook comment

  • amazing how white it is.................I guarantee it was a much better time back then you probably didn't have to worry about getting pissed on or stabbed by a random spook.

  • wow

it's crazy to see how times have changed from a parade like that to the parade it is now :)

  • so if it's dumb why you have a youtube account? so if you think it's dumb don't open this website

  • Why is it that all celebrations turn out to be whore shows after few years and in Europe they are still the same for centuries ?

because of dumb people of any color

Why are there soo many video responses to this video and none of them has anything to do with Mardi Gras ?

you guessed right: because of dumb people

    I HATE DUMB PEOPLE

  • Stop the self-loathing!

  • It's amazing to see so much misdirected anger expressed. The cultural decline in America isn't the fault of the gays or the blacks or any of the other bullcrap some of you all are so bent out of shape about. Go out and educate yourself about what's really going on and stop looking at people who are differnet from you. and blaming them. And hey remeber what the video is about. LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL. Laissez les bon temps roulez !!

  • I'm feeling like New Orleans is a liberal city surrounded amongst conservative lands? I don't get why people have to be so offensive to gays or any one different. Where has respect run off to?

  • this is really cool footage :)

I wonder what mardi gras was like back then after the parade at dark? Like, was it similiar to the party it is now?

  • bbb

  • btw awesome vid

  • Geez you people sure know how to ruin a holiday.

    My grandmother was there!
