You could mention to your physician that you are initiating ssmall motions in the lumbar verebral spaces. Ask if this is OK. I assume that it is or you would be in a cast to stop all motion,
I had 3 back surgeries 4 months ago still in rehab process.. I've instruments in S1-L5-L4 can I do this exersice in the coming months? Currently I'm in a rehab center working with physician..
This is a weird philosophy and seems like a farce but I actually get it. The alignment of the body during an exercise and range of motion used greatly effects how it shapes your body over time.
A really gradually, small movement repeated over time would logically manipulate the position of bones, ligaments, tendons etc where as large, broad ranges will just run them through the positions they're accustom to shifting through and settling in.
I would wager getting very fit first helps though
@JonDeth Very good Jon. To take your exploration one step further, consider the possibility that perhaps strengthening a disorganized body will strengthen the disorganization and strengthening an organized body will strengthen the organization. I recommend these exercises to help strengthen the body in its new organization.
@myrolfer just remember that anyone obese or having a long term sedentary lifestyle won't respond well to exercise in general let alone such minimalistic ranging. It's more likely they will need some level of fitness beforehand to see any benefit from this concept, otherwise their body will just relapse on a daily basis from this activity lacking efficiency.
I believe it's effective but efficient for someone out of shape, not a chance.
@JonDeth i think this kind of exercising is even better for someone who never exercised before. this is the safest method of strengthening. when you take a person (who has little exercise experience) and get them to exercise they will not have the correct muscle recruitment. this kind of exercising makes you aware of your body. increases strength from in towards out. therefore minimizing injury while maximizing awareness.
@cihan822006 no it's just like the guy says, repositioning the bones and keeping them there where as broad full range movements will strengthen the muscles and offer minimal skeletal correction.
This is for like scoliosis or a woman who's hops separated from giving birth and is now out out of skeletal symmetry.
@JonDeth these movements are believe me for any one. these are the movements our bodys are built to do. before starting any fitness routine you should learn how to move first. when you learn how to move lying down (low gravity) it will greatly help the move properly standing as well
@cihan822006 believe me, I've talked to the guy that created them. They serve a very specific purpose. Exercises like these are not for out of shape people, they would do nothing for them at all. They are for correcting skeletal abnormalities.
Beginner exercises are things like walking, leg raises, pelvic raises, jumping rope, stair stepping, bicycling. Beginner exercises focus on increasing heart rate and building lean muscle. These do neither of that.
I had Rolfing with Alan Richardson in UK a few years ago - Wow !
I had Scoliosis - my rib cage stuck out, after session 5 my rib cage had moved a huge amount. Before Rolfing I felt like my arms.. were all separate bits and pieces. After I felt like I had one whole body and that I lived in it
Alan recommended Theraflex to me - this moved most of the rest of the curve in my spine back into place. Rolfing and Theraflex together - it's an awesome combination.
I always thought that the purpose of language was to communicate an idea. I had no idea-after 100,000 views, that it didn't communicate the movement pattern. THANKS FOR SHARING!
Wow. The language used to describe the exercise is terrible. Tummy? Sit bones? "Curl your tail bone under?" but don't use "rectus abdominus"???? WOW. Rectus abdominus will activate if you curl the tail bone under, that's what it is supposed to do. However you elongate and allow the coccyx to lengthen down rather than "curl" it is more efficient. The language used is important.
Check out Hellerwork. It really helped me when I was in a Car accident. Joseph Heller studied with Ida Rolf over 35 years ago 5 years before she passed away.
These videos represent a part of rolfing that is often passed over. To help permanantize the rolfing effect, we must repattern our movements. Fell free to subscribe to see new videos lessons as they are published.
I've been 'rolfed' 2 times. (2 series of 10). Once each for an auto accident at different times of my life. THIS healed me, (and the first would have lasted if i hadn't gotten hit again)! Structural Integration is the other name - Ida Rolf discovered it. It balances the body by re-shaping the muscles. Really amazing work. It CAN be painful at times, but a little temporary pain to get out of a lot of permanent pain? A no brainer, for me. Just find a good one.
I just finding out about this. however, this seems like it would really help with some of my lower back pain. there are times that the pain is quite sharp and severe. thanks for the info. I'll continue my research.

what does "rolfing" mean?
mrqcrew 2 years ago
Rolf doesn't mean anything in particular, it's just a person's name
panchamkauns 2 years ago
It's a short form of the Rolf Technique of structural integration.
