  • And the end of it is where, exactly?

  • @Boffinme80 he does play the organ, when Christine wakes up and walks out to see him he is playing it. I went to see the stage show when i was 7 years old for my birthday and have been every year for the past 11 years. I love this because i think it captures all the magic of the stage and it allows Andrew lloyed webber to do things on this that he couldnt on stage

  • WORLD'S MOST EPIC OVERTURE EVER!!!!!!!

  • Even if it doesn't capture the magic, this version is still quite amazing! And if you don't like this version, then you shouldn't read the book. This movie is really more related to the original book than the Broad Way show.

  • This version of the overture sucks

  • like the masquerade , peaceful version

  • This is why this movie is such a disappointment. It fails to capture the magic. Everyone all thought the movie would be great and sadly, it isn't. They missed out really important parts that were from the stage show, Masquerade was COMPLETELY different as was Point of No Return, the Phantom's lair was too bright, he didn't even play the frigging organ! Not only is the stage show fantastic becausr it feels like you're actually there but it 's the passion and the wonderful atmosphere.

  • @boffinme80 It was a disappointment because your comparing it. Theater and Hollywood are completely different mediums each with their own advantages. Theater's being your actually there and in awe at your suroundings. Hollywood's being the ability to add effects in post production which are not possible, or safe, to do witha live audience. I have not seen the bradoway show, but I want to. I found this movie amazing regardless. Theater and Hollywood should never be compared.

  • @LordDarcia It's not because I'm comparing it. It was just a disappointment overall. The singing, the acting and they even changed it in some ways as well. Like Point of No Return for example and the rooftop scene.

  • I really love 1:06 :D

  • Whoever gave this song a bad rating, you don't know sick 'em.

  • Yes, I agree it seems more reasonable that it would be Meg rather than her mother, but as far as the dates go, remember that much of the movie was re-written compared to the stage show (too bad), and in the original production, the auction takes place in 1905, and the overture takes you back to 1881, NOT 1870 like in the movie....

  • in my playbill from broadway It is OLD MEG GIRY

  • Yea I agree. It's also pretty obvious it's Meg.

From the time period of 1870 to 1919. The Madame is dead.

And it's Meg anyway due to the Giry part.

And she remains unmarried, making her Madame Giry.

  • no it wouldnt, it would make her mademoiselle Giry. In english, she was called Mrs Giry, not miss Giry.

But do we really need to question it, its something the director did wrong. The movie was set in 1871, and yet he ignores that France was at war at that time. Additionally, hes the guy that put nipples on the batsuit.

  • Well, fromt he English version, we can tell she's married. But if she wasn't she would still be Madame Giry.

She would be Mademoiselle Giry at her younger years. But it would be automatic French ettiquette to refer to an old umarried woman as Madame.

You wouldn't walk to up to an old woman and call her mademoiselle unless you're an old man trying to flirt with her.

And you're right about the 1871

  • one point to add - if the auctioneer knew her last name, odds are he knew her marital status

But lets do some simple maths

Christine was 16 in 1871 - born 1855. Presumably giry jnr was the same age. Raoul would have been 5 years older - born 1850. If Giry snr was 17 when she had meg, she'd have been born 1833.

If in theory you went by Giry snr would be 86, giry jnr would be 69. It could still plausibly be the mother

Either way - Joel Schumaker put nipples on the batsuit

  • MY FAVORITE SONG!!!!

  • See the show.

    It's SOOOO much better.

    It took my breath away.

  • So true. Film is good for fans to be able to watch it wheneve rbut it doesn't even touch the live show!!

  • @MATTandMUSIC saaaame i've seen the us tour that's running right now (tim martin gleason as phantom) 3 times and ohhhh my goodness every time during overture my jaw was either on the floor or i was smiling like a kid at christmas

  • I am only assuming that the old woman is Meg Giry because Madame Giry is Looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong dead right??

  • It is Madame Giry. I think it be more beleavable if it were Meg.

  • It is Meg.

Raoul is soooo old and the same age as Meg.

It wouldn't make sense if it were Madame Giry.

  • It clearly states in the scene that it's Madame Giry & not Meg Giry It's the same actor playing old/young Madame Giry.

I don't thik was greatest idea. It should be Meg Giry. She always goes by that name.

  • It IS Meg!!

They call her Madame because she is OLDER!!

    Duh!!

  • It's Madame Giry in the play too though.

  • It has to be madame giry - if meg had married shed have a different surname

  • Maybe she didn't marry.

Madame Giry is WAAYY older than Raoul, Christine, and Meg, so that's just logically not true.

  • well... but in the book she did... xS

  • This is the only thing the film did fanstically well.

  • I like Point Of No Return & their exit through the trap door, through the fire.

  • Yes, the stage version is so much better than the movie. They changed quite a bit for the movie version...ie: the lack of the thumping bass when he's beckoning Christine to the mirror; the very chinsey red death costume in Masquerade...just to name a couple.

You haven't experienced Phantom 'till you've seen it on stage

  • i saw dis yesterday and thye stagew version is so better

  • the stage show is SO much better...but this song is fun to play on the keyboard X)

  • man i REALLY REALLY wanna see the stage version!!!! my mom and sister saw it a long time ago but i culdnt cuz i wuz too young...);

  • IT IS UNBELIEVABLE. SERIOUSLY, it will make you cry like a baby! It's sooo moving and it will actually give you the shivers. I honestly could cry thinking about it (is that pathetic) it's just so wonderful.

  • "Sangel222return" its totally normal(i think) to shiver just to think about it. Its brilliant.

  • I still love the phantom of the opera.. i need to see it again before the Australian season finishes =\

  • I was actually disappointed in alot of the movie including this part--compared to the stage version, the opening chords of the overture in the movie are fairly weak...also, I don't really like the extension on the end. My opinion is, if you want to truely experience the magic of Phantom, see the stage show, NOT the movie.

  • Well, I'm sure that everybody who has seen this show would surely rather see the stage show, but for people who can't afford it or are incapable of going for one reason or the other, this is the next best thing.

  • Yes, I agree the stage show is ten times better but I thought they didn't do a half bad job of the overture/prologue. However it will of course never match the stage show. I was like in total awe during the whole opening, I thought, "this cannot get any better" it just seemed to feed my every desire (if that sounds nuts) but it really is that moving and emotional.

  • i saw this on broadway and this scene was amazing. when they pulled the chandelier up sparks were flying out of it and the music started getting load and...it was just. WOW

  • aww i seen it 2 years ago wen iwas 12 and

we were late and missed tha part

we were walking into the lobby as it was playing was

  • I saw this in a small theatre the first day it came out, never seen it didn't know what to expect. The organ starts, I got surround sound around me and my heart starts pounding with the music. Whooo! Thats how to watch this flick

  • 1:45, with the bass notes D= goosepimples....

  • o you Europeans :P

    just kiddin

  • silence :P

  • hehehehehehehehehehe

    he

  • one of my favorite parts in the movie<3

  • the the chandelier rising, it gives me goosepimples...

  • at 3:09, what's with all the guys in the room full of white powder? What are they doing?

  • I think these are stonecutters / stonemasons

  • hmm, that makes sense. I honestly had no idea what they were doing with all that white powder...

  • I think that pouder comes from the stones they´re work on;-)

  • drug lab :D

  • Love this scene XD It's fantastic on stage and very well done in the movie too!

  • in the stage production, this scared the hell out of me

  • and me, i was not expecting that, (i had not seen the moive at that time) :P

  • Yeah same =D It was REALLY dramatic and absolutely amazing. The whole thing was absolutely BRILLIANT.

When the Phantom hanged the guy, I jumped in my seat

  • the auctioneer isnt creepy enough

  • ive been lookiing for this for ages. thanx
