BRING BACK MIKE ANTHONY!!!!! VH will always be about eddie and the guitar, but mike anthony was a big part of theyre sound with his background vocals!!! it doesnt sound as full as it would if mike anthony was back there singing the high parts on the vocals!!!!
I love DLR I love Van Halen , .. but this is a shell of what they used to be , Eddie just divebombs when he forgets parts , pathetic... He is not on top of his game here, be honest !!!!
New CD will be out soon folowed by a massive world tour. And thers lots of talk that this could be biggest world tour of any band in the history of rock. And van halen most certainly can do it!
wonder why he had the cordless drills on stage,as far as i know he only used it on one song poundcake, unless he incorperated it into his solo,my wife and i saw them at the very first show and he didnt use it then.
7 Guitarists that changed the world: Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Uli Roth, Edward Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen. There have been plenty of great guitarists, more successful artists, but who else has been as revolutionary as these guys? And if there were only 3? Hendrix, Edward Van Halen and Yngwie probably started the biggest quantum shifts in approaching the guitar. IMHO...
@51Thundersticks You havent seen van halen SUCCEED?!?!?! dude WTF are you even talkin about... you must have been sheltered your WHOLE fvckin life... This is one of the BIGGEST rock bands in the whole GALAXY!!! go crawl back under that rock youve been livin under OR for that matter you should stop SMOKIN ROCK you crackhead LOSER!!!!
@51Thundersticks and by succeed, I guess you didn't mean the 80 million dollars they made on tour, proving that not only can they still earn big, but obviously the fans still wan to see them. 80 million....yep, a real failure.
@51Thundersticks dude as of 2011 Van Halen has reportedly sold around 85 million albums world wide and played thousands of shows performing their innovative guitar style, so when you say that they have not suceeded can you explain more in detail what you are talking about ? I mean you are as successful as Edward Van Halen right ?
a sober eddie playing with his top on is good news. when the tops off hes normally pissed up, as many of the other vids on here show. looks healthy now tho. Hope they keep it together in the studio now. I need the new album!!
I agree with some of the guys here...when eddie is dialed in and on his game he is top shelf and really fun to watch... I was around when VH first landed on earth , they blew the world away..it was f*ckin amazing
@Hunkola Sammy Hagar was rocking while David the FUCKING DIAMOND FAG ROTH, WAS SHITTING GREEN IN HIS DIAPERS!!!!! SOMOKE SOME MORE CRACK FUCK HEAD ASSFUCKINGHOLE!!!!
Ok, so he might not be as great was he was in 1981, say, but can any of us say that we could get to his current standard - even if we practised for years?
The guy's a legend, and he deserves a pass for the off nights he had on this tour.
This video shows that he can still do it, and Dave sounded pretty good too.
i'm a drummer by trade and Eddie's the man !!.he's a legend, innovator, rock icon, guitar hero , tech buff & business entrepreneur .never mind the guys who talk shit about eddie..he's achieved milestones around any modern rock guitar player, and will be remembered long after he's gone !.these kids, and that's what they are, who are talking crap about him and stating that all these other shmoes are better than him, will just have to realise that those guys have one thing in common.. they're SHIT!
@fjdomanico lol !!he's 19 now ! and not for anything, i love the original line up and would love to see that , but wolfgang isn't doing anything special or indifferent to what michael anthony was doing..except maybe not swiggin' whiskey all night ! ..it's not like anthony was billy sheehan...but i see your point..
@fjdomanico He wasn't fired. It was a long decline of Mike wanting to do other things and Ed wanting more from the bass. Mike's background vocals were great, but his bass playing was average at best. Some even say Ed played the bass on lots of Van Halen tracks. Al stated that he never had Mike in his monitor mix because he hated his playhing. Dave didn't like Mike's playing and neither did Ed. I guess everybody's an asshole, right?
@euphoria5150 I have to admit, his playing on Chickenfoot was really good. But I've heard his isolated tracks (many you can hear on YouTube) and they are awful.
@DarthKazi Yeah, his playing on Chickenfoot was good. I know those isolated tracks, I have listen to many gtr & vox ones.. I will have to check it out. I know in the later albums Eddie did all the bass. Like Balance on...? I know they bitched about the bass on OU812 and I think he played on FUCK. Anyways - funny original post, it made me laugh! ;)
Anyone who saw him on the 2004 tour, or at the 2007 NAMM show might have thought he'd lost his touch...nice to see the most original and innovative player of his generation back on top form
The band is SO much better with DLR. Now if they could only get Michael Anthony back. They should. They need to twist his arm to get his ass back!
All this shit over the years with them having 3 different singers and two different bass players, it makes it very disappointing. What the fans really want is the ORIGINAL line up again or they'll never be 100% happy with the band. (Except Sammy fans. Nothing against Sammy or VH Sammy songs but Sammy's not the real VH in my eyes/ears.)
Not to rip, but I think Eddie's lost too enough of his high frequency hearing to realize that his new amps are indeed "chucking razorblades" (something he said he doesn't want them to do in an interview about the 5150III). They probably sound velvety smooth to him, but I kinda felt like I was being stabbed in the ears when I saw them in '07. Don't get me wrong, it kicked SO MUCH ASS, I just felt his tone has been less painful.
@jhop5150 good points, he's definitley way to 'tinny' now , he's lost some of that brown-warmth tone he had.
I have the same problem from playing WAY too loud my friends all complain when I turn my amp which sounds WARM to me,but sounds like ice-razors to them, but I've since learned to listen to them and use only what I know sounds a but less tinny and more warmth and meat but not too muddy.
@jhop5150 It could be that his hearing is waning. But most cranked tube amps (EL34s particularly) produce ungodly high end. Ed used to stuff crap over the amp speakers to quell the high end. I think his sound has always relied on screaming treble and upper mids, but many of us weren't going to concerts pre-1984 and rely on old analog recordings that take most of the treble out. I'd like to actually play through a EVH Wolfgang/5150III to really get an idea.
i have to say..as a professional session drummer who's toured and played with plenty of great guitarists and listening to VH for almost 25 yrs , Eddie is still the king of flashy , hard rock guitar..never mind all these others guys who can play faster or who do these insane guitar acrobatics..Ed's an original..he's the hendrix of my generation !
yeah no shit Zevofan524, Alexi lahoe (spelling) can suck a dick when it comes to Eddie's Mean Street intro. There is absolutely nothing that can EVER beat that, ever. Eddie invented a completely new way to make sounds and play guitar for that intro. Alexi L. just can play sweeps really fast and good/accurate. That's about it. Not very impressive if you ask me. Eddie's the one who invented shit, and more than just stuff like mean street.
Seeing this performance, I have to take back what I said before. I last saw VH with Sammy in AZ and Eddie was so wasted he couldn't play the riff to Panama. I swore that I would never see them again. But this performance is spectacular, with the exemption of David being a typical AHole. But, it looks like Eddie is back to being the greatest guitarist of my generation!!!
i feel dumb asking im a big van halen fan that's roth right i olny ask cus a freind said it's not ,i figured id get a second opinon i know it's him just want to show freind he's a jackass. lol thank's guy's listen to in a simple ryhme, sick song
Eddie Van Halen is bad ass. I only been listening to Van Halen for 10 yrs, but I can't find a guitar player that came out in the past decade that can match him. The closet guitar player to him in a newer band that comes close to him is Slash or Tom Morello. Well, maybe John F from RHCP. EVH just kicks major ass!
@dmohr7 He is doing what he's been doing for years. He's doing what makes him EDDIE VAN FUCKIN" HALEN!!! Fuck all the haters! Keep your Buckethead and Alexi whatshisface. I'll stick with EVH
@Zevonfan524 wtf eddies my favourite! lol duh hes a genius and i already figured out what hes doing at 0:19 .i hate buckethead and alexi bucket heads a skinny guy who can shred but has no heart alexi some goth fag who thinks he can shred EVH FTW
Lol if you think Buckethead only shreds then listen to Electric tears, or watching sailboads with dad. You obviously have know idea what you are talkin about cause Im pritty sure buckethead has more slow and emotional songs than what everybody knows him for his "shred songs".
@dmohr7 I totally agree! You can't watch half the movies from the 80's without hearing a Van Halen song or seeing a Van Halen poster or someone talking about going to a Van Halen concert next week
@dmohr7 I moved on to other shit, like modern speed metal, and it only served to show me how amazing Eddie is when I moved back to VH. It's repertoire BTW. :D
@Zevonfan524 Eddie is king man and remember Eddie Van Halen is one of Bucketheads all-time Idols. Kids these days dont realize where players such as Buckethead got their swag from. Eddies style was like from outta space when he first played. He used to turn his back to the audience so he couldnt be copied. BADASS!
@codyjt5150 The last song he used the Kramer 5150 on, by the way. I love the riff from Judgement Day... all the Hager haters are fags who can't understand the evolution of Ed and co.
Eddie on his game here in this clip, NICE TO SEE! Hes been my hero for sooooo long, its great seeing his chops still NUMBER ONE as the originator/innovator!!
Like everyone has said Mike should be there. He is the energy they need, in the harmonies and stage presence. I don't see it happening anytime soon sadly, especially since Wolfgang is supposed to be on the new album.
Dave-era Van Halen had six consecutive multi-platinum albums & sold-out world tours in only 7 years........all without the benefit of heavy rotation on Top 40 radio & MTV like Van Hagar enjoyed.
Even a dummy like you can see why Van Roth is the only VH that anyone ever cared about.........van Hagar & Van Cherone is forgettable garbage.
Because "Pretty Woman", "Jump", "Panama", and "Hot for Teacher" didn't receive massive amounts of air play on MTV. Yes I know that 3 of those songs were on the same album, but to act like Roth fronted VH was some grassroots band that received little promotion is a riot.
Look at how many sold-out world tours and multi-platinum albums Roth-era VH had before MTV even existed, dummy..........then ask yourself if Van Hagar could've done that without heavy exposure on MTV and Top 40 radio to push their faggoty love ballads on the public.
Roth-era is the only Halen anyone ever cared about..........CASE CLOSED.
Since we are going to shoot off at the mouth about ignorance would you care to explain how word got out about Van Halen in the first place? Of course MTV wasn't around in 78 when the first album dropped, but you act like there was no other form of promotion for a new band other than touring. Which is completely untrue.
Try not to get your panties in such a twist this time little guy. Does Mommy know your using the computer? "Dummy" lol weak.
I just laugh and laugh at you Van Hagar douchebags who come in here and try to compare them to the mighty Roth Halen........fuckin' laughable.......did you know that "FUCK" was the #1 album for only one week? It was quickly replaced by Natalie Cole in 1991. Check out how long "1984" was in the Top 10 after it debuted.
The truth stings you Hagar fans.......Dave comes back in 2007 and VH has their highest-grossing tour of all time......meanwhile, Hagar is playing Chickenshit......LOL, FAIL !!
First off I am a fan of both incarnations of the band so your assumptions have helped you little.
Second if you think that Van Halen would have stayed the course of a blockbuster like 1984 throughout the early 90's you are sadly mistaken (its been proven time and time again.)
And finally, at least Hagar has found a way to stay relevant to his core fans and make new music (with Michael Anthony no less) while the VH bros sat on their ass and Roth contributed to a bluegrass record. Fail indeed.
Who cares if Hagar is "stays relevant" if the best he can come up with is Chickenshit? You'd have to be drunk off your ass to enjoy that garbage......which is probably why they always play empty dive bars.......LOL.
You can't enjoy both incarnations of VH......they were totally different bands.....it's like saying you like sex with a Penthouse Pet but you also like sex with your sister -- think about it.
Just wait until the new Roth VH album comes out........it will kick ass.
LOL well hopefully any fan of any recording artist hopes they stay relevant. And you could argue VH's relevance in today's music world. Sure it was the highest grossing tour, but it was also a nostalgia tour. Chickenfoot (though I am not a fan) did just put out a Gold record which is an accomplishment for any rock band in today's market.
You can absolutely enjoy both incarnations of VH that is a ridiculous statement.
I agree on the new Roth VH album (should it ever happen) it should be great
It's hard to argue with numbers. And it's true that Roth-era VH has more album sales to their credit. Less #1 albums, but more in overall numbers. Though not a soul in the bizz would consider Hagar's music career a failure. A platinum album with Montrose, various Gold and Platinum solo records, Many multi platinum outings with VH, and a Gold record with Chickenfoot.
I'm not arguing, as their is no changing anyone's mind in a Roth vs. Hagar match. Just giving the other side of the story.
In the battle of Roth vs. Hagar........I think the two latest VH reunion tours tells the whole story........it's the best way to compare apples to apples.......in 2004, the Van Hagar reunion tour grossed $55 million in 80 gigs........in 2007-08, the Van Roth reunion grossed $93 million in 76 gigs -- almost twice the gross with LESS shows!
That is all the proof anyone needs that Van Roth is the Halen that stands the test of time........Van Hagar is forgettable garbage.......CASE CLOSED.
Also, let's not forget the "Guitar Hero: Van Halen" game coming out in Dec. has nothing but Roth-era songs on it -- not a single Van Hagar era song anywhere!
The game will be a huge hit, and I highly doubt anyone will be complaining because "Right Now" and "Poundcake" were left off the playlist........LOL.
1st. Van Hagar tour 2004. Close to zero Press, and reviews a plenty of circulating through the internet of EVH's drunken sloppy playing no doubt killed ticket sales. The zero press also being because of EVH's drunken state.
2nd. The track listing for Guitar Hero Van Halen was chosen by Wolfgang himself. And there is little doubt that EVH and crew had a say and didnt want Hagar or Anthony in the game, in fact it's rather obvious.
Another Van Hagar apologist making excuses to hide the truth.........the 2004 Van Hagar reunion tour was a failure because of a fatso tequila-salesman douche named Sammy Hagar........it had nothing to do with an intoxicated guitarist........Eddie was drunk off his ass during the entire Roth-era and they still sold out arenas all over the world.
Guitar Hero:VH is about simple economics, not Wolfie..........a game filled with sappy Van Hagar ballads would sell about as well as dogshit burgers.
EVH played like shit the entire tour. It's one thing to play wasted in your 20's, another in your 50's.
Guitar Hero: VH is of course about economics, and that is why if they wanted to maximize profits though would have included both eras to appeal to both groups of fans. This could have been done easily. But like the Rock & Roll HOF induction, the VH camp dropped the ball, leaving Hagar & Anthony to pick up the ball they dropped.
And why? Because EVH was in rehab recovering from the same drinking that ruined the '04 tour. The same drinking that caused a false start and a delay to the tour featured in the above footage.
And sure, Hagar has made a killing off of a bad ass rock club and his tequila. While Roth was off making weird ass No Holds BBQ vids and being a paramedic. Very Rock & Roll.
And I like Roth, like I said. But I hate ignorance and people that try and drive a wedge between fans.
You Van Hagar dipshits always expose your true nature........every time I pontificate about the greatness of Roth-era Halen........you assholes come back with -- "Well yeah but Sammy sold a lot of tequila at Cabo Wabo"........LOL.......weak!
Dave didn't become a paramedic because he was short on cash.......he owns a mansion in Pasadena, for piss sake........he did it because he wanted to help other people, just like his doctor father did........I'd like to see Hagar act that selfless.
LOL.......you Hagar buttplugs get dumber and dumberer.......I really wish they would put out a "Guitar Poser Hero: Van Hagar".........I bet it would sell about as well as used tampons from your mama's twat.
LOL is right. You are truly pathetic. "Van Hagar dipshits". I pray that you are not a grown man.. If you are, I have this horrible mental image of a dude with VH posters all over his wall, a mullet, and his 70 year old mother yelling down the basement stairs for him to take out the garbage.
All I ment was Sammy has been very successful in many different ventures sense his departure from VH... Roth & VH have had one successful tour together though I do hope for more. As I said b4 I like Roth.
I have a professional degree and I'm respected and feared because of my educational status.......but I revert back to a schoolyard bully when I taunt you Van Hagar fans because it's so much fun.......slapping you upside the head watching you cry!
Try to critically think why each version of Halen was successful -- Van Roth was awesome because of a superior acrobatic frontman and a virtuoso guitarist......Van Hagar was successful because of boring corporate ballads and tequila - see my point ??
Hmm. Given your choice of words throughout this discussion I think you will have a hard time getting anyone to believe that. Tequila btw had nothing to do with Hagar fronted VH, it wasn't sold until the late 90s. What were the singles off of 1984 if not meant for mass consumption? Or from Diver Down (Dancing in the Street, Pretty Woman.) from VH2 (Dance the Night Away)? Once again your rebuttal is a failure. And to think it came from such a feared, respected, educated man.
Do you even realize how Hagar got the VH frontman gig in the first place? It's because him and Eddie shared the same auto mechanic, Claudio. Go look it up if you dont believe me. How fucking stupid do you gotta be as a singer to only get hired in a band because you share an auto mechanic?
Diamond Lee earned his legendary status in Van Halen the old fashioned way -- he worked his ass off playing bars and backyard parties with the band over 5 years before they got signed.
LOL Yes I did know that. I'm not sure I understand your logic of how that makes Sammy stupid, lol. He was coming off a successful solo record. Must be some more of that highly educated logic of yours working away.
Hagar earned his stripes playing with Montrose and early bands the same way. You try and make it sound like he did nothing music related b4 VH. Perhaps it isn't I that needs the history lesson. Besides there is nothing u can tell me about VH that will be new to me. Nice try though.
You just fail to realize that Hagar got the VH job in a very retarded way........did Robert Plant get into Led Zeppelin because he had the same plumber as Jimmy Page? Did Mick Jagger share the same dentist as Keith Richards?
David Lee earned his rock god status the same way all the great ones do........lots of hard work and dedication and paying dues......Hagar abused his VH fame to bait-and-switch people into buying his shitty tequila and drive customers to his Mexican bar....what a douche.
LOL, it was Eddie that made the call LOL! VH was out a singer, any singer would've been a fool 2 turn the job down. And you fail to read responses, Sammy earned his music career the same as anyone in the VH camp (without the help of Gene Simmons no less.)
And 2 say he pulled a bait-and-switch, shit anyone can say that about Roth 4 doing anything post-Halen, its easy 2 say that he was trying to bait-and-switch VH fans by hiring Vai and Sheehan to make a carbon-copy of VH 4 his solo work. Fail4U
Sammy never earned anything in his life........except earning the title "Red Rockin' Douche" for being the biggest fraud in the music biz......David Lee took an unknown Pasadena rock band and turned them into multi-platinum gods within a couple years.
The David Lee Roth band with Steve Vai was similar to VH but at least it was still selling you entertainment and smiles......David Lee never tried to push liquor at his shows like Sammy does.....do you know he did that during his 2002 tour, ass?
you have made it painfully obvious that there is nothing educated about you at all, these childish, inaccurate comebacks instead of adding something new 2 the discussion.
I will not be responding again. I have obviously, judging by your responses, thrown your simple mind more than it can handle.
an example would be similar 2 this.
Me: "Hagar earned his career too."
You: "Nu uh. Did not."
You are pathetic. the only thing u accomplished was proving 2 everyone that sees your posts that you fail.
Looks like I squashed another Van Hagar buttplug........it's getting too easy these days!
Meanwhile, I'll continue to listen only to VH '78-'84 because that's the only Halen that means anything........and I'm sure you'll be crying and jackin' your meat to "When It's Love" because Sammy's voice sounds like a woman in heat.
Wouldn't say squashed. More like I got bored with your weak ass retorts and your childish name calling. The only think you accomplished was making yourself look like an ass to everyone that views your posts and show your inability to carry a valid discussion/argument without your immaturity showing. Your "respected and feared for my educational status" post will make a lot of people laugh though.. Congrats.
Whatever, dippy.........you're just like all the other Hagar hemorrhoids out there........wasting your life away in the ass-crack of Van Hagar World and occasionally flaring up to annoy the millions of Van Roth fans who rule.........but hey, keep yourself entertained with the rapidly dwindling popularity of "Chickenshit" and the rest of us will savor the new VH album and be attending sold-out Halen shows for many years to come.
I can always count on another asinine reply from you. You are too predictable. As I said I enjoy both versions of the band for different reasons.
Don't be pissed that someone took you up on a discussion that you had no hope of keeping up with after you claimed to be an educated person. Your inability to make a valid point is not my fault. Take your anger elsewhere.
I look forward to new music from EVH and crew.
I'll be waiting for your response, I know that you won't be able to help yourself.
You just don't seem to get what the original Van Halen was all about.......it was a unique and powerful force of nature.......it was an attitude about life........Diamond Lee called it "belligerent enthusiasm"........and you can't just plug-n-play lame singers like Hagar into Van Halen and keep that magic........is Queen the same with Paul Rodgers? What about Journey with the Filipino singer?
So go listen to your Van Hagar records, dumbo........you're a hopeless moron.
Another response. Didn't see that coming! U assume too much saying what I know and don't know about VH. And once again you fail to add anything new. I never once argued the validity of classic VH. The only thing I've done is make valid points about the Hagar years. Yes I know Classic VH was something special, and I don't really care to compare the two eras.
It's like 2 different bands. That's why I can enjoy both and why the Hagar years are good to me. They weren't trying to be the same band.
You're slightly more tolerable than the typical Van Hagar fan because you acknowledge Roth-era and Hagar-era were very different bands.......I usu. get the retarded response "Hey, as long as Eddie's in the band that's all that matters"........that's about the dumbest thing I've heard in my entire life.
I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree about the validity of Van Hagar.......I really wish Eddie dropped the name Van Halen when Hagar joined -- he ruined the greatest American rock band.
For sure. Roth and Hagar eras are like oil and water. I think the decision 2 leave the name the same when Hagar joined is boiled down simply 2 economics. VH was coming off a huge hit with 1984 and wanted 2 keep riding that wave. Hagar era is no doubt more Pop/Rock than Classic VH, and I think that stemmed from the music Hagar was making pre VH.
Im a huge fan of EVH but I don't give him a free pass. No Michael Anthony is stupid as hell. I dig Wolfgang and all, but we deserved a real reunion.
I only dig Eddie's playing.......he's a rather shitty human being and not very bright......him & Alex were stuck on long Cream covers in the club days and would've never gotten popular if Dave didn't come along and convince them to play catchy, melodic tunes.....and of course, Ed only hired Cherone because they had the same manager (Ray Daniels).....and I agree about the reunion without Mike -- a fuckin' sham......Eddie disappoints me in many ways outside of his God-given talent to play guitar.
I would love to know the whole story of why MA is out. I know Ed wants to play with Wolf and all of that, but there was an awful lot of bitterness directed towards MA right before the announcement was made (in a couple of radio interviews I heard of Ed.)
I would think it would have to be more than MA playing with Hagar, ecspecially sense they brought Hagar back in '04 and they didnt want MA.
From what I've heard, Ed had it out for Mikey for a long time........there's rumors Ed played most of the bass on "FUCK" and he wanted to fire Mike back then as well........Eddie is a real weirdo and probably thought Mike was a sub-par bass player even though the fans loved his vocal harmonies........but Mike was doomed anyway as soon as Wolfie was old enough to tour........if Eddie can fire Roth, Hagar, and Cherone.......he's certainly an egomaniac dickhead capable of ousting the bass player.
Regardless of why Mikey was fired, that was utterly disgraceful how his image was erased from the cover of the VH 1 album on the official VH website and replaced with Wolf right after the Roth reunion tour was announced.........Eddie stooped to new levels of despicable behavior with that stunt.........and it still baffles me to this day that most fans think Roth was the egomaniac control freak in Van Halen !!
I think the control freak thing really started for Ed when Dave left the first time. I think he was afraid that VH would go under. He became even more of a control freak when he got sober in 95 and drove Hagar out, then in '98 the sluggish sales of VH3 made him a bitter control freak... LoL.. A cheery story all around.
I think Ed was born a bitter control freak.......but no one saw it much during the Roth years because he was drunk off his ass most of his time and Dave was running the ship........but I agree he became more unbearable once he got sober during Balance and that's why Hagar got booted.........Cherone was a mistake from day one........the only thing I admired about Gary was that he sang the old Roth songs on tour that Sammy never wanted to sing.
Cherone seemed like a case of a fan being picked as the new front-man. So he picked the songs he thought everyone would enjoy. The best thing about the 3 tour was no matter what era you were a fan of, you got a taste of it all. EVH tried to make him sing like Hagar (way outta his register) so he sounded strained the whole record.
I went to a VH3 show in '98 and Gary did a decent job on the Dave tunes.......of course, any Van Cherone song meant a beer & pretzel run to the concession stand........best part of the whole night was seeing Mikey sing lead on "Somebody Get Me a Doctor".
I heard a bootleg from a show, I think it was the Hershey PA show, where Mike hit a crazy high note during "Doctor".. It was indeed killer. I thought Cherone sounded good on "Romeo Delight".
Mikey did indeed nail the high scream in Doctor and the crowd went bonkers........the highlight of the show.......Cherone's voice annoyed me both on the record and live.......his vocal range was good during his Extreme days but his Halen tenure he sounds like he's yelling more than singing. Plus, he had some very strange dance moves on stage.......cringeworthy.
I just can't imagine VH without Mike's great backing vox... that was a signature of their sound, like Ed's overdriven sound and Alex's distinct snare tone.
I'm glad to see Dave back, but man,why can't he sing the tunes like there were, and not with all the extra crap he puts in!! Sounds nothing like the album!!
F Sammy....he's great on his own, but the Van Hagar years yeah they had some catchy tunes but come on they turned into a pop band. All those killer classic VH tunes were "locked" away for the last couple decades. Thank god Dave is back and they are a ROCK band again.
wooooooooooooooo EDDIE

@51Thundersticks and by succeed, I guess you didn't mean the 80 million dollars they made on tour, proving that not only can they still earn big, but obviously the fans still wan to see them. 80 million....yep, a real failure.
robg8888 9 months ago
@51Thundersticks dude as of 2011 Van Halen has reportedly sold around 85 million albums world wide and played thousands of shows performing their innovative guitar style, so when you say that they have not suceeded can you explain more in detail what you are talking about ? I mean you are as successful as Edward Van Halen right ?

Ok, so he might not be as great was he was in 1981, say, but can any of us say that we could get to his current standard - even if we practised for years?
The guy's a legend, and he deserves a pass for the off nights he had on this tour.
This video shows that he can still do it, and Dave sounded pretty good too.

@fjdomanico lol !!he's 19 now ! and not for anything, i love the original line up and would love to see that , but wolfgang isn't doing anything special or indifferent to what michael anthony was doing..except maybe not swiggin' whiskey all night ! ..it's not like anthony was billy sheehan...but i see your point..
blica1 1 year ago
@fjdomanico He wasn't fired. It was a long decline of Mike wanting to do other things and Ed wanting more from the bass. Mike's background vocals were great, but his bass playing was average at best. Some even say Ed played the bass on lots of Van Halen tracks. Al stated that he never had Mike in his monitor mix because he hated his playhing. Dave didn't like Mike's playing and neither did Ed. I guess everybody's an asshole, right?

@DarthKazi Yeah, his playing on Chickenfoot was good. I know those isolated tracks, I have listen to many gtr & vox ones.. I will have to check it out.

Don't get me wrong, it kicked SO MUCH ASS, I just felt his tone has been less painful.
jhop5150 1 year ago
@jhop5150 good points, he's definitley way to 'tinny' now , he's lost some of that brown-warmth tone he had.
I have the same problem from playing WAY too loud my friends all complain when I turn my amp which sounds WARM to me,but sounds like ice-razors to them, but I've since learned to listen to them and use only what I know sounds a but less tinny and more warmth and meat but not too muddy.
AGENTxx47 1 year ago
@jhop5150 It could be that his hearing is waning. But most cranked tube amps (EL34s particularly) produce ungodly high end. Ed used to stuff crap over the amp speakers to quell the high end. I think his sound has always relied on screaming treble and upper mids, but many of us weren't going to concerts pre-1984 and rely on old analog recordings that take most of the treble out. I'd like to actually play through a EVH Wolfgang/5150III to really get an idea.

yeah no shit Zevofan524, Alexi lahoe (spelling) can suck a dick when it comes to Eddie's Mean Street intro.

Van Hagar was a pop pussy sellout band.........making radio-friendly ballads in order to sell records.........that's why everyone hated them so much.
Roth Van Halen was the shit.......lots of cocky attitude with the chops to back it up........they just wanted to set the world on fire.
Hunkola 2 years ago
Clearly everyone hated Van Hagar....which explains their 4 #1 albums in a row.
Roth, Hagar or Cherone....it's all great to me. Ed will always be the greatest.
PatVanHalen5150 2 years ago 2
Dave-era Van Halen had six consecutive multi-platinum albums & sold-out world tours in only 7 years........all without the benefit of heavy rotation on Top 40 radio & MTV like Van Hagar enjoyed.
Even a dummy like you can see why Van Roth is the only VH that anyone ever cared about.........van Hagar & Van Cherone is forgettable garbage.
Hunkola 2 years ago
Because "Pretty Woman", "Jump", "Panama", and "Hot for Teacher" didn't receive massive amounts of air play on MTV. Yes I know that 3 of those songs were on the same album, but to act like Roth fronted VH was some grassroots band that received little promotion is a riot.
StonewallVH5150 2 years ago
Look at how many sold-out world tours and multi-platinum albums Roth-era VH had before MTV even existed, dummy..........then ask yourself if Van Hagar could've done that without heavy exposure on MTV and Top 40 radio to push their faggoty love ballads on the public.
Roth-era is the only Halen anyone ever cared about..........CASE CLOSED.
Hunkola 2 years ago
Since we are going to shoot off at the mouth about ignorance would you care to explain how word got out about Van Halen in the first place? Of course MTV wasn't around in 78 when the first album dropped, but you act like there was no other form of promotion for a new band other than touring. Which is completely untrue.
Try not to get your panties in such a twist this time little guy. Does Mommy know your using the computer? "Dummy" lol weak.
StonewallVH5150 2 years ago
I just laugh and laugh at you Van Hagar douchebags who come in here and try to compare them to the mighty Roth Halen........fuckin' laughable.......did you know that "FUCK" was the #1 album for only one week? It was quickly replaced by Natalie Cole in 1991. Check out how long "1984" was in the Top 10 after it debuted.
The truth stings you Hagar fans.......Dave comes back in 2007 and VH has their highest-grossing tour of all time......meanwhile, Hagar is playing Chickenshit......LOL, FAIL !!
Hunkola 2 years ago
First off I am a fan of both incarnations of the band so your assumptions have helped you little.
Second if you think that Van Halen would have stayed the course of a blockbuster like 1984 throughout the early 90's you are sadly mistaken (its been proven time and time again.)
And finally, at least Hagar has found a way to stay relevant to his core fans and make new music (with Michael Anthony no less) while the VH bros sat on their ass and Roth contributed to a bluegrass record. Fail indeed.
StonewallVH5150 2 years ago
Who cares if Hagar is "stays relevant" if the best he can come up with is Chickenshit? You'd have to be drunk off your ass to enjoy that garbage......which is probably why they always play empty dive bars.......LOL.
You can't enjoy both incarnations of VH......they were totally different bands.....it's like saying you like sex with a Penthouse Pet but you also like sex with your sister -- think about it.
Just wait until the new Roth VH album comes out........it will kick ass.
Hunkola 2 years ago
LOL well hopefully any fan of any recording artist hopes they stay relevant. And you could argue VH's relevance in today's music world. Sure it was the highest grossing tour, but it was also a nostalgia tour. Chickenfoot (though I am not a fan) did just put out a Gold record which is an accomplishment for any rock band in today's market.
You can absolutely enjoy both incarnations of VH that is a ridiculous statement.
I agree on the new Roth VH album (should it ever happen) it should be great
StonewallVH5150 2 years ago
Roth Halen was the real deal --- a band that shook the foundations of rock music........Van Hagar was nothing more than a forgettable fraud.
Sam Hagar is very unimpressive.......it's obvious that he's just a tequila salesman who moonlighted as a failed musician on the side.
Hunkola 2 years ago
It's hard to argue with numbers. And it's true that Roth-era VH has more album sales to their credit. Less #1 albums, but more in overall numbers. Though not a soul in the bizz would consider Hagar's music career a failure. A platinum album with Montrose, various Gold and Platinum solo records, Many multi platinum outings with VH, and a Gold record with Chickenfoot.
I'm not arguing, as their is no changing anyone's mind in a Roth vs. Hagar match. Just giving the other side of the story.
StonewallVH5150 2 years ago
In the battle of Roth vs. Hagar........I think the two latest VH reunion tours tells the whole story........it's the best way to compare apples to apples.......in 2004, the Van Hagar reunion tour grossed $55 million in 80 gigs........in 2007-08, the Van Roth reunion grossed $93 million in 76 gigs -- almost twice the gross with LESS shows!
That is all the proof anyone needs that Van Roth is the Halen that stands the test of time........Van Hagar is forgettable garbage.......CASE CLOSED.
Hunkola 2 years ago
Also, let's not forget the "Guitar Hero: Van Halen" game coming out in Dec. has nothing but Roth-era songs on it -- not a single Van Hagar era song anywhere!
The game will be a huge hit, and I highly doubt anyone will be complaining because "Right Now" and "Poundcake" were left off the playlist........LOL.
Hunkola 2 years ago
Alright.
StonewallVH5150 2 years ago
Another Van Hagar apologist making excuses to hide the truth.........the 2004 Van Hagar reunion tour was a failure because of a fatso tequila-salesman douche named Sammy Hagar........it had nothing to do with an intoxicated guitarist........Eddie was drunk off his ass during the entire Roth-era and they still sold out arenas all over the world.
Guitar Hero:VH is about simple economics, not Wolfie..........a game filled with sappy Van Hagar ballads would sell about as well as dogshit burgers.
Hunkola 2 years ago
EVH played like shit the entire tour. It's one thing to play wasted in your 20's, another in your 50's.
Guitar Hero: VH is of course about economics, and that is why if they wanted to maximize profits though would have included both eras to appeal to both groups of fans. This could have been done easily. But like the Rock & Roll HOF induction, the VH camp dropped the ball, leaving Hagar & Anthony to pick up the ball they dropped.
StonewallVH5150 2 years ago
StonewallVH5150 2 years ago
You Van Hagar dipshits always expose your true nature........every time I pontificate about the greatness of Roth-era Halen........you assholes come back with -- "Well yeah but Sammy sold a lot of tequila at Cabo Wabo"........LOL.......weak!
Dave didn't become a paramedic because he was short on cash.......he owns a mansion in Pasadena, for piss sake........he did it because he wanted to help other people, just like his doctor father did........I'd like to see Hagar act that selfless.
Hunkola 2 years ago
LOL.......you Hagar buttplugs get dumber and dumberer.......I really wish they would put out a "Guitar Poser Hero: Van Hagar".........I bet it would sell about as well as used tampons from your mama's twat.
Hunkola 2 years ago
LOL is right. You are truly pathetic. "Van Hagar dipshits". I pray that you are not a grown man.. If you are, I have this horrible mental image of a dude with VH posters all over his wall, a mullet, and his 70 year old mother yelling down the basement stairs for him to take out the garbage.
All I ment was Sammy has been very successful in many different ventures sense his departure from VH... Roth & VH have had one successful tour together though I do hope for more. As I said b4 I like Roth.
StonewallVH5150 2 years ago
I have a professional degree and I'm respected and feared because of my educational status.......but I revert back to a schoolyard bully when I taunt you Van Hagar fans because it's so much fun.......slapping you upside the head watching you cry!
Try to critically think why each version of Halen was successful -- Van Roth was awesome because of a superior acrobatic frontman and a virtuoso guitarist......Van Hagar was successful because of boring corporate ballads and tequila - see my point ??
Hunkola 2 years ago
StonewallVH5150 2 years ago
Do you even realize how Hagar got the VH frontman gig in the first place? It's because him and Eddie shared the same auto mechanic, Claudio. Go look it up if you dont believe me. How fucking stupid do you gotta be as a singer to only get hired in a band because you share an auto mechanic?
Diamond Lee earned his legendary status in Van Halen the old fashioned way -- he worked his ass off playing bars and backyard parties with the band over 5 years before they got signed.
Hunkola 2 years ago
LOL Yes I did know that. I'm not sure I understand your logic of how that makes Sammy stupid, lol. He was coming off a successful solo record. Must be some more of that highly educated logic of yours working away.
Hagar earned his stripes playing with Montrose and early bands the same way. You try and make it sound like he did nothing music related b4 VH. Perhaps it isn't I that needs the history lesson. Besides there is nothing u can tell me about VH that will be new to me. Nice try though.
StonewallVH5150 2 years ago
You just fail to realize that Hagar got the VH job in a very retarded way........did Robert Plant get into Led Zeppelin because he had the same plumber as Jimmy Page? Did Mick Jagger share the same dentist as Keith Richards?
David Lee earned his rock god status the same way all the great ones do........lots of hard work and dedication and paying dues......Hagar abused his VH fame to bait-and-switch people into buying his shitty tequila and drive customers to his Mexican bar....what a douche.
Hunkola 2 years ago
LOL, it was Eddie that made the call LOL! VH was out a singer, any singer would've been a fool 2 turn the job down. And you fail to read responses, Sammy earned his music career the same as anyone in the VH camp (without the help of Gene Simmons no less.)
And 2 say he pulled a bait-and-switch, shit anyone can say that about Roth 4 doing anything post-Halen, its easy 2 say that he was trying to bait-and-switch VH fans by hiring Vai and Sheehan to make a carbon-copy of VH 4 his solo work. Fail4U
StonewallVH5150 2 years ago
Sammy never earned anything in his life........except earning the title "Red Rockin' Douche" for being the biggest fraud in the music biz......David Lee took an unknown Pasadena rock band and turned them into multi-platinum gods within a couple years.
The David Lee Roth band with Steve Vai was similar to VH but at least it was still selling you entertainment and smiles......David Lee never tried to push liquor at his shows like Sammy does.....do you know he did that during his 2002 tour, ass?
Hunkola 2 years ago
you have made it painfully obvious that there is nothing educated about you at all, these childish, inaccurate comebacks instead of adding something new 2 the discussion.
StonewallVH5150 2 years ago
Looks like I squashed another Van Hagar buttplug........it's getting too easy these days!
Meanwhile, I'll continue to listen only to VH '78-'84 because that's the only Halen that means anything........and I'm sure you'll be crying and jackin' your meat to "When It's Love" because Sammy's voice sounds like a woman in heat.
Hunkola 2 years ago
Wouldn't say squashed. More like I got bored with your weak ass retorts and your childish name calling.

StonewallVH5150 2 years ago
You're slightly more tolerable than the typical Van Hagar fan because you acknowledge Roth-era and Hagar-era were very different bands.......I usu. get the retarded response "Hey, as long as Eddie's in the band that's all that matters"........that's about the dumbest thing I've heard in my entire life.
I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree about the validity of Van Hagar.......I really wish Eddie dropped the name Van Halen when Hagar joined -- he ruined the greatest American rock band.
Hunkola 2 years ago
StonewallVH5150 2 years ago

StonewallVH5150 2 years ago
From what I've heard, Ed had it out for Mikey for a long time........there's rumors Ed played most of the bass on "FUCK" and he wanted to fire Mike back then as well........Eddie is a real weirdo and probably thought Mike was a sub-par bass player even though the fans loved his vocal harmonies........but Mike was doomed anyway as soon as Wolfie was old enough to tour........if Eddie can fire Roth, Hagar, and Cherone.......he's certainly an egomaniac dickhead capable of ousting the bass player.
Hunkola 2 years ago
Regardless of why Mikey was fired, that was utterly disgraceful how his image was erased from the cover of the VH 1 album on the official VH website and replaced with Wolf right after the Roth reunion tour was announced.........Eddie stooped to new levels of despicable behavior with that stunt.........and it still baffles me to this day that most fans think Roth was the egomaniac control freak in Van Halen !!
Hunkola 2 years ago
I agree about the website debacle 100%.
StonewallVH5150 2 years ago 2
I think Ed was born a bitter control freak.......but no one saw it much during the Roth years because he was drunk off his ass most of his time and Dave was running the ship........but I agree he became more unbearable once he got sober during Balance and that's why Hagar got booted.........Cherone was a mistake from day one........the only thing I admired about Gary was that he sang the old Roth songs on tour that Sammy never wanted to sing.
Hunkola 2 years ago
Cherone seemed like a case of a fan being picked as the new front-man. So he picked the songs he thought everyone would enjoy. The best thing about the 3 tour was no matter what era you were a fan of, you got a taste of it all. EVH tried to make him sing like Hagar (way outta his register) so he sounded strained the whole record.
Your right though, Ed is batshit crazy it seems.
StonewallVH5150 2 years ago 2
I went to a VH3 show in '98 and Gary did a decent job on the Dave tunes.......of course, any Van Cherone song meant a beer & pretzel run to the concession stand........best part of the whole night was seeing Mikey sing lead on "Somebody Get Me a Doctor".
Hunkola 2 years ago 2
I heard a bootleg from a show, I think it was the Hershey PA show, where Mike hit a crazy high note during "Doctor".. It was indeed killer. I thought Cherone sounded good on "Romeo Delight".
StonewallVH5150 2 years ago 3
Mikey did indeed nail the high scream in Doctor and the crowd went bonkers........the highlight of the show.......Cherone's voice annoyed me both on the record and live.......his vocal range was good during his Extreme days but his Halen tenure he sounds like he's yelling more than singing. Plus, he had some very strange dance moves on stage.......cringeworthy.

Mike had a great voice. It'll never be the same.
DarthKazi 2 years ago 2
Couldn't have said it better m'self.

Sounds nothing like the album!!

buy the album.

F Sammy....he's great on his own, but the Van Hagar years yeah they had some catchy tunes but come on they turned into a pop band. All those killer classic VH tunes were "locked" away for the last couple decades. Thank god Dave is back and they are a ROCK band again.
