Does anyone know where the saying, "every man Jack of you" came from? "Cable tears?" There are sites that explain the nautical terms but not, that I can find so far, any that explain the slang of the day. Help please. I'm wondering where the author got their information from. Excellent material. It grips you from the first. Reminds me of the master story teller in, Arabian Nights" who explains why a story is good. If you haven't seen it, you should. It's here on YT. :) Songs
Notice that Styles doesn't look at Horatio? Showing his disrespect. Discusting game and one that could spread disease through the ship had the rats had something communicable. Had he backed up when Styles gave him that dirty look, none of them would have respected what he would say in the future. Especially Styles. The roughest of men. When H gives them another chance and says, "it was six" he's gained S's respect. Young he may be but he's fair and he cares. They can talk to him as men.
Yup, they changed "Larboard" to "Port" for that reason, in the heat of battle, it would be hard to understand. Same as why most militaries now use phonetic alphabets (alpha, bravo, charlie) less rhymes mean less confusion.
@dxwallace Many times the point of boarding was to simply intimidate the enemy into surrendering, similar to the bayonet charge. You can either get pulled into a bloody hand-to-hand battle that you likely can't win, or you can surrender quickly and get it over with.
"Did you see me? did you see me? . . . . we carried them by boading and I killed two!! Well . . .one certainly!" I have to love Archie, he is so brave, so sweet, and just So Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!
I just realized that I'm the same age as Hornblower in this episode... A mildly depressing thought considering that I'm nowhere close to him in what I've accomplished...
More like alot of responsibility! Could you imagine at 17, giving orders to people twice and three times your age--esspecially ones who, for fun, in their spare time, kill rats using only their teeth?! O_O;
Did you see me? Did you see? Well, where were you? We carried them aboard. I killed two of them. Well, one certainly! Oh, u should have been there, Horatio, you should have been.
And he Finaly grows a set!! :D

In you watch The Gangs Of New York closely, you will see Styles (Sean Gilder), he plays the ratmaster.

Wasn't that boarding of the ship the shortest battle in history, like about 45 seconds?

I love it how Hornblower's authority over the seamen gradually grows as this episode goes on.

Ioan is gorgeous, almost beautiful.
Styles is disgusting. That's just sick what he was doing with the rats.

for a seventeen-year-old, Horatio has quite a lot authority.

For a midshipman he is fairly old, most joined the navy at 12.
