Earl on the guitar ....listen to Jimmy Brown the newsboy. That's Earl on the guitar. Sure is good to hear Lester sing. I'll always remember his voice as the real bluegrass lead .... with the help of great harmony.
If I remember correctly, Onie Wheeler wrote and sang this song. It used to be on here and may still be. It was back when Onie was with Roy Acuff and his band the Smokey Mountain Boys.
A simple message in this song , yet it says so much and still reaches out to someone out there who may need to hear this... reminds me of that other gospel standard ( i have Ricky Scaggs' version) Gone Home.. Both beautifully done. ..
Great song. great singing. I loved singing bluegrass gospels. However, i would argue with you on whether anyone needs to hear this for anything other than the great music.
ok i know this is guna sound crazy... but here it goes... im related to Lester Flatts... hes like my great great great gteat grandpa or something like that... and no im not kidding its completely positivly true, i swear!
hi iam with the hillbillie express when i was 8 years old i learned to play the banjo by listening to the beverly hillbillies im 53 now these guys had a lot of influence on my musical career. See our videos on you tube under hillbillie express i still cant play like earl but i sure do like trying
Yet another beautiful song from what is arguably the very-best-assembled, most-collectively-talented bluegrass band in the entire history of this genre of music. I'm so glad to find out from the comments below (thanks, CCDG) that Vols 9 & 10 of their wonderful TV series are now available. I've got Vols 1 to 8 .. & I thought that was all that was available. So what a pleasant surprise !!
@colindominy Thank you....Volumes 9 & 10 are marvelous! Nice to know others who thoroughly enjoy these great shows as much as I do... You are right--Flatt & Scruggs & The Foggy Mtn. Boys had it ALL!
I'd probably be one of them. I need to curb my drinking, am still suffering from my last session, I was walking home peacefully when without warning I was viciously attacked by a lamppost.
Earl on the guitar. People right here on youtube argue with me when I comment on his great guitar picking. They tell me he played the banjo. (As if I didn't know that!) Here is proof he plays the guitar too. These are the old Martha White Shows which you can purchase on DVD.
That is the guitar that draws a lot of arguments..check out the pick guard..and look at the base of the headstock..you can tell it's a D-18,,but it looks like it has a Gibson pick guard..
@olehoundog1 :: Yes and thank you ! I'm getting Vol.s 9 & 10 in a few days--I can't wait. I didn't look at the song list so they'll be a surprise ! ! Are you excited to see 9 & 10 ? These new shows will probably catch our T.V.s on fire ! Flatt & Scruggs & The Foggy Mtn. Boys play the hottest bluegrass around.
Id much rather hear Earl pick a guitar than a banjo, he was awesome. Most of the gospel songs that didn't have a banjo in it, Earl played the lead guitar.
If you want to see Earl really pick it, look on here for "On My Way To Canaan's Land". Earl has a good do at it on that one.
@pegcage ; Couldn`t the ole fella play anything one might hand him ; My dad could do that ; most that age could ; if they had a smiggin of talent ; it was awesome ! ever see Dolly ; and the three sisters the blonde the beauty and the wild lil sister ; Mandrel Sisters finally came to me ; Now amoung the three sisters ; i`m not sure any instrument in the world was safe ; I think the same was true here !
I think they thought with the kind of music and as good as they were they could wear their hats anyway they wanted...are they the best.....we're so lucky that we have that kind of music to listen to....nice to see that you and everyone else are still listing to this wonderful music
If you don't have goose bumps on that one...you ain't alive. If you have any more of the sacred songs (as Lester always called it) please post...I grew up on the show and it brings back very good memories
Another priceless CLASSIC clip from the famous Martha White Grand Ole Opry TV Series featuring Lester, Earl & the GM Boys. I especially like the 4 & 5 part harmonies which are a stand-out feature in this gospel number by the group. They were really working superbly well together on this one, all right ! It's also good to see old Curly Seckler there in the line-up (he later left the line-up). Thanks for this wonderful clip, banjostead !!
This shall be my Funeral Song. Yes, this will do!
