yo dude, ive been trying to learn this stuff you do here and in your other video explanation of some triplet licks...that works good what you say about understanding it conceptually and practicing with the metronome. now im starting to feel those changes. i can do what you do here until about 0:40. what are you doing at 0:40-0:45? thanks, how did you start to play these things?
Those are triplets in groups of 9 (RLRLRRLRL-RLRLRRLRL). I started to play them by sitting down with a metronome or a song on and just playing triplets, accenting asymmetric or unusual patterns like 4, 5, 7, 9, and forcing my muscles unnaturally to play them until I could hear the patterns and it became natural. No secret, just work! Thanks for the support. Check out my newest video on playing in 7 if you like this stuff
This is realy good , love the rhythms! I'm a drummer my selft but i have a hard time with ghost notes, but you inspired me to practice more on it, because this is awosme! love from sweden.
One suggestion, you can play but for a video you don't have to play all you know. Would have rather heard one groove. No groove because are trying to impress.
Appreciate the input. Actually, I called it "messing around..." to make it clear that it was going to be about some licks and not about grooving. Check out my other videos for a groove if you want.
He's using a crappy camera mic, that's why it sounds awful, I bet that kit sounds awesome miked up!People like 'dimsunk' are running thru pre-amps/Pro Tools/eq/compression and good mics to create a separate audio feed.
I'd say naedsukram pretty much nailed what I was going to say, although no, they don't teach me how to tune. I actually think I know how to tune pretty well. My personal drumset has a completely different sound (check my other video) because I don't use it for jazz. Perhaps these drums are just not to your taste
Thanks. I don't think so-- I'm not too familiar with his playing, and as far as the general "one-handed roll" goes, I don't have a clue how to do it. Perhaps you could tell me what part you're referring to and I'll explain what I'm doing?
It's like a standard bop kit--shallow 12 inch tom, deep 14 inh tom with legs, shallow 20 inch bass drum-- with a 10x10 fusion tom added on the left. So I guess like fusion diameters on the toms, but in jazz depths, and a 20 inch shallow bass. I dunno exactly when it was bought, it's my school's, but it's Gretsch

at 0:54-0:57 are you doing another pattern in groups of 9 - (RLRFFRLFF-RLRFFRLFF)?
kwixset 2 years ago
You got it
thatsmypeanuts 2 years ago
i believe you played that pattern starting on fourth triplet sixteenth note of the measure. with a LRL on the snare before it and a RLR after it?
kwixset 2 years ago
That sounds right, although I think it's a RLF not a RLR at the end.
