Another thing is that the dificulty that the pacient has in controling the hand can be overcomed quicker with the help of computer software.
The goal is pass the patient, somehow, the information that he activated some nerve, that is implied in the control of the hand. Then, with time, the brain will learn to control properly those channels and streams and do complex conscious movements.
It's interesting. The concept is so so simple.. Even in amputees who still have their forearm with muscle, prostetic mechanical hands could be fixated to bones and be activated mechanicly by the muscles, if they are still there.
or just call the hand guy luke skywalker go to fix his hand. DO IT NOW. ask Darth vader if you dont think it's good. and if you email me, i can give you the number of a good penis guy ;)
@Patrik97BEAST i saw another vid on someone else where they added other stuff he was able to feel the tips of his fingers when gripping hard. first thing first a working robotic hand would be amazing for people who have lost limbs. only a few million on the project..... nations around the world should be giving billions for this research.
Lol, I'm looking at my left hand ... and as a matter of fact the last time I saw this video my left hand was working ... now I can't control half of it due to an accident, its strange how attentive I was this time. At least my hand is still in place.
To the guys commenting on the redundancy of which hand he's attempting to control:
has it ever occurred to you that the hand was in development long before Pierpaolo showed up? People don't simply finish 3 million dollar projects over night.
@StingAirsoft They could, someday. Technology always starts as expensive and unreliable, but over time computational power for dollar increases, helping to improve both these aspects.
What's a today's million dollar prosthesis will be a twenty thousand dollars prosthesis in ten years.
@extist43 That hand's not yet for him... He is now at the level of helping scientists improve this technology - and for his time & efforts being "the guinea pig" - he's being guaranteed a finished product upon time.
I thought scientists were actually working on growing back the body parts instead of making these robotic arms. Like the man who grew back his finger tip
this is a great innovation n i just pray that reseaches like these must go on... but the thing is that... it must get cheaper so that most of the people could be helped from these kinda project... and these researches must not stay within reaseacher's room...
Hah, I noticed that too.. how much harder it must be to accomodate left hand thoughts to right hand implant? I'm glad it's happening, to be honest. Gives chance to a lot of people that suffered in accidents. If I lost a limb, I'd sign up for any project like that just to help with the progress.
@Panczekolada Why would it be? Take stereo speakers for example, If the speakers are physical in reverse position (and for whatever reason you cant swap them, like in case of robotic arm being right handed and patient you can experiment with lost his left hand), all you have to do is flip the wires. I'm pretty sure a similar concept is at work here (as in, either there are wires for each finger, or if the signal is compound, just mirror image it before sending it to the arm).
Well.. it's not about mechanics. Of course you can adapt left hand nerves to right hand. I might be wrong, but if he had to stay calm, focus and imagine self moving the hand, it would be much easier if it was left one. I am pretty much sure that his progress would be better if he actually saw left robo-hand moving as he tried to move his left hand. I know I would. Easier to accomodate in one's mind, I think.
putting our human awareness and consciousness into things that would not be living, or part of us on their own, is so cool! I think we are very clever.
@shuszzam Play the video game Deus EX or at least watch the trailers. These robotic arms are a marvel, their should be a law requested by the U.N that these arms have to be reasonably priced so everyone who needs them can afford them. Obviously they need to make a profit but only a limited profit.
@Matrix803 By it's very definition, no... cuz we can explain the movement of the robotic hand via science.
More leniently, you could consider telekinesis as the movement of an object using only will power as a recognizable medium for effort. In this case, the movement itself is achieved via electricity, and the information is transmitted through your nerves as a medium.
Telekinesis is describing an unidentified capacity to move objects; this is not telekinesis, just really cool science.
@omkar415star the time machine is theorized to be impossible because of physical laws... the idea that the existence of hands is physically impossible is... well... just think about it for a minute :P When was the last time you heard about a naturally occurring time machine? Never (obviously, at least nothing real), now the last time you heard about a naturally occurring HAND. Still impressive, but not mind boggling.
Even though he lost his hand, he still has the part of his brain and all those neurons that would control his hand. It's simply a matter of somehow connecting the robotic hand to the part of his brain that used to control his former real hand.
@JoshuaRelapse I hope you never have to experience the loss of a limb... just your worthless reproductive organs, so that the world doesn't have the suffer more idiocy from your ilk.
this shouldn't be mind boggling.. our body functions with brain waves, and with a wave everyone knows the things that can be done are countless. Its just that what limits us is not knowing how to pick up those waves or just not knowing enough "math" to manipulate those waves. Its just a matter of time. "May science bless us all" lol
I think this is a fake. I mean not the project itself (though it`s also possible), but the movement in the video. Reason? Very simple - the man lost his LEFT hand, but the robotic hand he is moving is... the RIGHT hand. I doubt that scientists would use right hand replacement to act like left hand replacement))
@VictumRoManius I saw this, I'm christian, I liked, therefore it wasn't christians but athiests afraid that christians will use these to clobber them.
