@lovelaceandsmiles Yep, it's perfectly safe. You still have full control over yourself and can make it stop at any time. It's not much different than what your brain does when you dream--except you just have your eyes open and are awake :)
@bennyscot27 Pretty much as long as you want it to. It'll take about half an hour to get going, and it pretty much stops as soon as you remove the ping pong balls. I've never gone for a super long time--who knows, maybe your brain would just give up after a while :)
ehm...i think i know whats going on here.. ping pong balls can be used to make smoke bombs and are highly toxic, when you open them they release some sort of lemon smelling gas that would probley make you see things when your inhaling it for so long...
@NamelessBert Actually, the ping pong balls make you see complete white, which means you practically are seeing nothing. So, your brain starts making stuff up. A better way to do this is listen to white noise (static from a radio) and it works much much better. And doing that makes you hear things, because you can't hear anything besides white noise so yet again your brain makes things up. I've researched this before, I'll send you links to prove my point if you don't believe me.
@wafflesnfrenchtoast yeah do please send me them in a personal message.. i cant seem to find much good evidence apart from trying it myself but it didnt work.. I want to go on an out of body experience not just see/hear things..if i wanted to to that i could just take some xtc or something :p
The sound you you listen to do this is just white noise, like from a TV. If I remember correctly the sound blocks all other sounds and eventually your brain just cancels it out, when this happens your brain simply starts to make up what it hears. I'm not entirely sure how correct that is but I do know that it's white noise.
@MrSmtaylor23 If I remember correctly, it took me about 15-20 minutes before I started seeing anything other than swirly colors, though in most instructions I read, it says to at least give it 30 minutes.
@Bigassboya This video was taken about 30 minutes after I started, though I had been seeing hallucinations for about 10 minutes already. Everything I read said to give it at least 30 for stuff to start happening, but also that it effects everyone differently and some people don't really see anything at all.
@dunclair Damn I hope I'm not amongst the people this doesn't work on. Also when you had the hallucinations, did the background red look really dark to you? I'm using a red party bulb and it is really intense to the point where after I'm done with the ganzfeld my eyes have lost a lot of sensitivity to red, making streetlamps and soft lights look green for a while. It gets darker after a while, and like you it gets hard to tell whether or not my eyes were open, but it still hasn't worked for me.
@Bigassboya That sounds more like an afterimage than anything else. I'd perhaps get a different light source or move the light bulb much further away, maybe with some sort of a light diffuser to even it out. I wouldn't be surprised if the afterimage was messing it up for you.
@peanutmaster1231 I just coded up a red HTML page and set my browser to full screen. I'm sure you could do the something similar with MS Paint or whatever. I think there are also some Youtube videos of just red for this very purpose.
I tried it just right now, and I saw some weird faces. They didn't really look human, maybe alien like? Also just random shapes. In the middle of my view, it would get dark and the shapes would show up. Pretty interesting. I want to try it again.
I found that swimming goggles with duct tape over them worked just fine. Also, there being a seam there didn't seem to matter, eventually it all just bled out into a nice uniform pinkish color. Though it did take about half an hour for any effects to set in in my case (maybe the seam mattered after all?). Oh and as far as a light source goes I just used a lamp with a red plastic bubble wrap thing over it and that worked fine for me
@fxsaberboy I think I've seen other people use white plastic spoons before. It doesn't really matter what you use as long as it disperses the light and creates a nice even field of reddish/pinkish light in your vision. I.e., you don't want something with seams or whatever that your eyes might try to focus on. Ping pong balls work nicely for that (though I admit they are a little uncomfortable to tape to your face).
@theemoflash It's just white noise--I think I was listening to SimplyNoise (search for white noise generator and it should be the first result in Google) when I did it--but even listening to a radio that isn't tuned to a station would probably work.
@barrjordan You are in complete control the whole time. Right at the end, you can see me as I start to remove the ping pong balls. To be honest, I don't think you're going to see anything too weird--it's mainly your brain coming up with random images, patterns, and some colors.
@barrjordan Eh, this was kind of the lame part--I just coded up a quick HTML page with a red background and set my browser as fullscreen. I think it would have been better if I had a brighter light source.
@AceBanyon@srvfan2 Keep your eyes open. It got kind of weird after a while, because I soon could not tell if my eyes were open or not (they were, but my brain couldn't figure it out). But I guess that's kind of the point--blocking the brain's ability to receive external input so that it has to make up stuff in its absence. Or something like that :: shrug ::
Is this safe?

About how long did it take you to have the hallucinations?
I spent maybe 25 mins without any effect, although at the point where I stopped the red was significantly weaker than when I started out.
