Well, if you really want to distinguish Chinese and Japanese, then you have to know their paternal Y chromosome haplogroups and their maternal mitochondrial haplogroups.
Japanese is basically half hg D and half hg O, Chinese is mostly hg O.
The estimated age of haplogroup D-M174 is between 50000 to 60000 years old, while the estimated age of haplogroup O-M175 is about 35000 years old. Therefore, genealogists suspect that hg D arrived at Asia much earlier than hg O.
