the Myth Busters are "not" able to bust all Myths, I emailed them about 2 biggest and most common Myths in the world that they have not busted and got no reply from them, FAIL.
its legal to turn "right on red" in most states in the US so you dont have to sit and wait at stoplights to turn left. also, you are turning into the nearest lane when you turn right, and you turn into the farest lane when you turn left
This is bullshit because you still have to yield to cars on some right hand turns. Secondly the only reason they saved 2lbs of fuel is because they coasted that whole hill instead of a portion of it like in the first run.
And the only way you can accurately test this myth is if you do it at the same time and same day which they did not. There could of been less traffic. Also they used a fuckin delivery truck, of course that shit is gonna waste gas on start ups.
This is just impossible to believe, the amount of fuel different is just too much .
they've made some mistake.
The science is that idling burns fuel and stopping and starting burns fuel, but the right hand route took longer and they still had to stop at red lights while going straight... still, the difference in the fuel usage is just way too much to beleive.
Ehm, I'm no american so maybe theres the flaw, but have you guys over there ever heard that you can turn off the engine while you're waiting at a traffic light? -.-
@MrJoBilly anything can stop a bullet given a sufficient mass. It needs to equal or exceed the opposing force of the bullet to stop it. You need mass + acceleration to cancel the forces out.
Well, this assumes that you can do right turns absolutely anytime even on a stop/red signal. Where I live though, there are a few places where right turns can be prohibited on a stoplight (you will see signs that say "No Right Turn On Red Signal").
They ie: ups, fed exp, do this because making right turns only reduces the chances of accidents when compared to crossing an intersection making a left turn. Considering the low acceleration of the vehicles in question and also their size. I think mythbusters as with so many other "myths" have their facts wrong....
@eMCeeShyGuy yeah this one was pretty stupid. there could have been more hills, more stop and go traffic on one route then the other and they didn't even mention that.
@eMCeeShyGuy In California it is legal to make right turns on a red light if there is no incoming traffic. Additionally not all intersections have dedicated left turn signals, so you have to wait until all incoming traffic clears before you can proceed. A running engine burns fuel even when the vehicle is not moving. Less waiting, less fuel spent.
@eMCeeShyGuy When an object is in motion it doesn't have to overcome as much friction as it would from stopping. Making left hand turns means more stopping and to get back up to speed you'd expend more fuel. Since you're much more likely to stop completely at a left turn and to then sit and idle for a time, you'll generally expend more energy moving your vehicle.
@eMCeeShyGuy i would bet it has more to do with the fact that left hand turns typically involve stopping before completing the turn even on a green light, thus since the right hand route has more consistent motion it would use less fuel since the car doesn't need to waste energy speeding back up, no science to prove this but seems right lol
@eMCeeShyGuy Its about the fuel pump... When you do left corners, the fuel goes to the right, where the pump is... More fuel on the pump, more fuel going to engine and more fuel being wasted...
@llwang - when turning left most people will use more gas when accelerating so they can clear an intersection so this causes the use of more fuel, also idle time is a factor if you have to wait long periods for a left arrow. right turns can be made on red in most cases, & not as much acceleration is required/used.
@guitar2adam uuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh so this doesnt aply to my country because u always have to w8 to turn right or left because the roads are narrow and there arent special lanes to turn right or left so...

In america, the smaller turn is turning right so you use less fuel.

it doesnt make sense!!! how does a shorter left hand rout use more gas than a longer right hand route?
