Everyone singing along at home? Bet that's a racket. Thanks to PM and friends for this exuberant fantasia of fusion, and to rednoise for bringing it here :)))))))))))))))
sometimes pat metheny kinda gets on my nerves, makes me feel like Im in an elevator in a dept store with a dentist, plus he looks like hes gonna take a poop, got to catch that show a few times tho and was really good, and Im just pickin on pat hes a really great player, love the album he did with jim hall and the album he did with charlie haden, just dont dig on the smooth jazz
A bit of history for me...2 of my favorite musical universes in the same quadrant (TV show) pat and todd rundgren. i doubt whether there there could have been any dialogue between them but hey!
@hypno59 - Pat helps accompany Todd in my other video from this same show, "Never Mind the Why and Wherefore, so there must have been some interaction. I'd love to see them actually collaborate on something.
I don't know about the rest of you Pat Metheny group fans, but my most frustrating years were his Richard Bona years. As good a bass player as he is and was, he just didn't fit the Pat sound at all IMO. Well, the vocalist side of the group. the best years were Pedro Aznar, David Blamires and Mark Ledford years...
@cbmuzik - Too bad he couldn't have kept Jaco on board. Imagine all the great music-art they would have produced! But, at least we have Bright Size Life. Mark Egan was pretty fantastic, though.
I'm really into his trio stuff but just getting into his large group records. Any recommendations on what albums to start with? Also what album is this from?
As albums go, Still Life (Talking) is a good one. Speaking of Now and The Way Up are two of my great favourites, as are Imaginary Day and We Live Here, though they aren't to everyone's tastes. The First Circle, the song, is one of my very favourite PMG works, but I'm not such a fan of the album. The Road To You, live in Europe is well worth picking up. Amazing live album. The band sounds unbelievable.
The road to you. espec. the video is the summum for metheny group fans. it got a grammy for best jazz album and was recorded live!!! the video is even better... best version of are you going with me(because the guitars midi files are edited!! sounds amazing!!
Start with Still Life Talking. It was a smash hit and every album after that went on to win Grammy's just about. This album is from the album directly after Still Life Talking...Letter From Home.
the next clip is with earl klugh! i know because i have it! this is the best night music between 88'90'. the musicians there are fantastic!! oh yeah!!! thanks!!
can't believe i never saw these shows. awesome.

Why did this show only last these two puny years? The rap crap generation?!!!

I really hate when people refer to this as smooth jazz. If you must classify it,call it jazz fusion or just fusion.

Thank you David Sandborn for raising the bar for music on tv. That bar hasn't been touched since these shows aired. You are beautiful, thanks! Josh

@jwklbm326 That was the coolest show ever on tv...which is why it didn't last long.

@MARDIUNO Thank You. I guess you feel the same. I feel fortunate to be able to appreciate his gift, not everyone does.

@gittens40 Don't say that! You've created a horrible, nigh-apocalyptic alternate universe where Pat doesn't exist.

Is Lyle Mays cueing the "brass" part on the synth at 4:42?
(or where is it coming from?)
uubuuh 1 year ago
Yes, he was cueing the brass sound on the Kurzweil 250 and then triggering it on the piano via MIDI interface.
