IndianaJones8887: They are computer-controlled opponents who get in your way. But they also can be beneficial; cause them (or a human opponent) to wipe out and your temperature resets, allowing you to use more turbo.

MartyTurco093: I don't know about a lot, I guess it depends how you define a lot. More people than Excitebots for sure, but still nowhere near Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, or SSBB. But my friend roster is filling up quite nicely actually, as opposed to ExciteBots, which I never added more than 5 people to.
