this gives me a sense of perspective - you think you have been in heavy conditions, then you see these kinds of conditions. Hope the bilge pump works.
Hellofragin - you can sail with me any time - but you have to ride in the holding tank for the head - then I will pull your sorry ass out and use you to troll for sharks.
Big - I hear you - little boats are much harder to sail. You work in nanno second and they are far, far more responsive and unforgiving.
They look like luxury liners compared to the size of boat i've sailed. Go to Hobart or play in Bass Strait on a 30 foot flat assed lightweight flyer and get really rinsed. Good for learning on those boats....i suppose. Grin.
Learning how to sail on one of those is their only redeeming feature. They are slow, heavy and quite frankly... dull.
But then again, you'll learn more about sailing and boat handling by sailing a dinghy called a Laser. Perhaps you should sail one. Try and be less monosyllabic next time you post. You wanker.
and before the insults fly, first time i was on a boat, i was 4, 25 foot fishing vessel, moved on to a 48 footer, then down to a 45 footer made of fiber glass. at 19 i became a commerical sailor, and am currently a fourth class engineer (motor)
lol life certinaly is not a rehearsal, as dieing is rather perminit. i can understand the thrill of the race.... i just cant understand the risks people will take in weather they should be avoiding. i'm glad to hear the mayday's where low tho.
after you tow enough sail boats off of sand bars, bravey starts to seem like it might be more stupidity. i've also watched a small club of sail boats demand a container ship change it's route in a shipping lane (wont happen.) so they could keep up their race. i grew up fishing, and i'm a marine engineer now. if anything, you'll have to forgive me, when i see a sail boat, all i see is rich fools, doing stupid things to brag about later to friends. call me jaded.
I think you are being very narrow minded. I am volunteer crew for a charity that teaches disadvantaged kids how to sail and helps them get their tickets or at least something to put on a resume that gives them any kind of career other than crack dealer. I can assure you that not everybody in a sail boat is a rich fool.
And i laugh in the face of any fisherman who starts pointing fingers about others not giving right of way. If they were fishing as often as they declare themselves to be then there would be no fish left in the sea.
oh i won't argue that a lot of fishermen are pricks when there gear is in the water. i've got plenty of stories of fishermen from working on a seismic boat, that assumed they had right away, when we were also towing gear. best to avoid them just the same, i know fellas that'll fire a few shots for less. your screwing with his livelyhood. i'm glad your helping kids, but like i said , i'm jaded. i've developed the interested in learning how myself, but the ppl involved keep turning me off.
id have to say going out on the water in those kinds of conditions is fucking scary, the first time i did it i nearly shit myself evertime the bow dipped into the water. you get used to it after a long while until someone gets thrown overboard, at which point you become pants-shitting scared again
lucky they picked up jim about a minute after he was thrown over
This is as though as it gets, ever. The people who do this race deserves every inch of respect for their achivement. Many of the waves pictured are 30-50 feet tall.
"WELLBRAN" i may have not sailed the Challenge, i may not have exceeded 10000miles under my belt, i even may not have sailed a boat ever before. But i can safely say i know more about sailing than you do...
What you say as the basics, would be 3 tonnes of water hitting you whilst your holding a piece of string soaking wet slipping out of your hands. And perhaps theyve been up 3 days straight no rest. I may not have done a trans-atlantic as of yet. But i know more than you because i know more of the respect, coaurage and love these men show when they do struggle to lift a sail 5 times there body weight.
Monday morning armchair quarterbacks are the best for knowing how to do everything even though they themselves have done nothing other than tell other people how to do things they have never even came close to doing on their own....
Awesome video mate. Superb. Soundtrack fits well and it gives otherwise ignorant people a glimpse into another world that they nothing about. If you ever need someone to sit on the rails, let me know.
Unless you've been on the bow of a boat when it's blowing 40+ and the bow is pitching 10+ feet and handled sails then I'd say you have no idea what you're talking about. As for the "amatuer" comment I will remind you that several bow and/or mastmen were injured on the most recent VO70 race, at least 2 to the point where they missed legs.
These videos show the most dramatic moments and being swept off your feet or otherwise bashed about in very rough weather is what qualifies.
Is that intentionally supposed to be insulting? They are amateur in that they were not paid to do it, but I do hope that in making that comment you personally have at least 30,000 miles sailing under your belt and have sailed for at least 7 weeks in the Southern Ocean. Because they have.
@WELLBRAN I'm sorry, but you are rather misguided. You say that they are bad because they are falling over, have you ever had a wall of water hit you in the face? There is no way you can stand upright against it. Water is heavy, and when a big wave breaks over the bow, and you have both hands in the air trying to get that sail down before it tears off the mast, you have no way of standing upright.
Strangely enough, I don't mind the soundtrack at all; indeed, it seems to go nicely with this insane footage. I first saw this video on Google and it was credited as a spot done for promotion of the 2004 Global Challenge. That version was much higher quality but was removed. See the same 2000 footage plus more with a "we found a hurricane" comment at the end...
Those Challenge boats are brick sh*thouses. I know a guy who rode out a Cat 2 hurricane in the Atlantic on one. Taking a beating like that must be hell.
This really is rough weather sailing at it's best. It really makes me want to get out on one of those Challenge Business yachts and give it a go!!! Great Video.

Actually, the name of this song the BT Global Video sequence samples is "Clubbed to Death" (The Kurayamino Variation) by Rob Dougan.

i have no clue why any one would bother to do this, or why they dont have to pay the coast guard when they have to come out and get them.

Why wouldn't they bother? Life is not a rehearsal. And coastguard callouts to the Global Challenge were reassuring rare!

Very amateur crew, trying hard to kill themselves, hanging, sliding, crawling, falling all over the place, good job for strong harnesses.

I know they do it for nothing, but what I mean is they have have had very little training by their actions, they are struggling on the basics

Anybody will struggle with the basics in that weather. A real amateur would capsize an Optimist in dock.
