Actually, those are really valid questions and I've wondered them myself. There isn't an explanation in the book. But if I had to guess I would say maybe the fact that when she's sick her body is so focused on the healing portion that it has no time to recognize the drug factor, and in the books it turns on the vampires when she drinks their blood so maybe its the intimacy of drinking from them is what creates the bond. im just guessing.

OMG Thank you!!! that is exactly how I feel she's so pretty in that a unique I mean at first glance people think ohh she's average but her teeth yuck..but if they look closer she has this light about her and this "other-worldly" quality. It's revealed what she is in the 5th or 6th book of the series. but in the show they'll keep dropping hints until the truth comes out season 6 or 7. Who cares about the teeth I think it makes her more human and imperfect.
