It's like Elizabethan minstrel songs meets... "The Safety Dance"
When I heard this song in the DVD Menu I was like "wtf?" but then remembered the movie takes you up to the present day. So it was with a great deal of anticipation I pressed 'Play'. And wow, this song made it one of the most moving happy-endings I'd ever seen in a film.
AND Sally Potter herself does backing vocals in it. =-)
Lovely song! Woolf's novel of the same name is her long love letter to the poetic family--Sackville Wests--through the centuries, culminating with Vita Sackville-West .
I am mad because I have yet to see the entire film(I've only seen a bit of it once). I am a history & culture fanatic & am a visual artist, so these art films fascinate me. The music along w/ the images was odd in a good way. Mesmerizing. I hope to see the entire film soon. I need to read Virginia Woolf. I always thought her a mystery...
Back in ’93 after she saw this movie, my wife casually and cunningly induced me to watch it. As the movie progressed, my puzzlement grew and grew as I attempted to figure out what was supposed to be taking place in it. My wife was surreptitiously watching me out of the corner of her eye when the girl unexpectedly and bizarrely transformed into a guy. She told me later that she could not stop laughing because of the look on my face the instant that action occurred onscreen.
I am not taken to swearing but when that happened I was so stunned that I just started blathering stuff like, “What the fuck just happened?!! Huh?!! What the fuck is going on with this fucked-up movie? Did you spike my drink with LSD? What the fuck is this shit? I have never seen shit like this. Jesus, what is going on?!! Are you trying to mind fuck me?!” She simply laughed uproariously through my entire rant.
That was the most abnormal thing I have ever seen in my life on the movie screen. I could not believe it. Still, it was not a bad movie and I am thinking of watching it again someday. However, it was very, very weird and a little more cerebral than what I had expected. I do like this song and the video is very well done. One thing in life that truly astounds me is the capacity of the human mind for infinite creativity and imagination. Astonishing, truly astonishing.
This music is wonderful, i never herd anything like this before. You know, i don't like very much that film, but what a strange song in it! Thank you for this vid, really.
This was just a fantastic movie with wonderful scenery from a great actress and the melody of Jimmy being added was just a phenomenal feat for them to incorporate.
thank you so much, you must have a gorgeous soul, to know this song, and make such a wonderful video from the movie scenes. may the above bless you eternal. peace love n harmony
hace quince anos desde encontre' a esta cancion... mi novio primero me la toca. creo que es una de la mas bellas, espresivas, y "sexy"s de siempre. pero, estoy confundido. no es verdad que los liricos son contra . . .
Fell in love with the movie and was introduced to Tilda Swinton and I was hooked. The music took me out of my body and I was looking through 4th dimensional eyes. In "Coming" the lyrics say it all.
Hmmm... If you like the sound of men who sound like women as I do you can look for contre tenors and falsettos. I cant really think of a music genre to file this under though sorry!
Thank you for posting. I foolishly lent out my Orlando soundtrack years ago and never got it back so hearing this song now is pure ecstasy. I am going to have to listen to it at least 500 times to make up for lost time!
I remember watching this movie for the first, second, third and fourth time all in one day at one time. It absolutely entranced and mesmerized me. Tilda Swinton, genius beyond belief. And Jimmy's music, this has been in the top stack of my music soundtrack shelf for the last 16 years. Thanks to everyone out there who feels touched by this most excellent of movies!
seriously one of my favorite movies of all time. not pretentious like most period piece's. the end scene with jimmy sommerville's song helped make this movie epic.
Heliotropezzz333 - if you search under 'Tilda Swinton Orlando' you'll find the clip about halfway down listed as 'Orlando1992 opening' with a picture of Jimmy Somerville - hope this helps.
I watched this movie 3 times in a row when i first saw it to make sure I got everything I could from it. Truly a great movie and so beautiful. Thank you for posting this song.
¡I'AM IN LOVE WITH JIMMY SOMERVILLE AND HIS FALSETO STYLE! I am coming! I am coming! I am coming through! Coming across the divide to you. In this moment of unity feeling an ecstasy to be here, to be now. At last I am free Yes at last, at last to be free of the past and the future that beckons me I am coming! I am coming! Here I am! Neither a woman, nor a man We are joined, we are one, with the human face I am on earth and I am in outer space I'm being born and I am dying
Traslasierras. I thought there was another song by Jimmy Somerville in this film, in a scene which is at night lit by torches, but I can't seem to find it. Maybe I am thinking of a different film but set in the past also. Does anyone know the scene and where I can find it?
I remember that scene. But he sang "Elizabeth" (sure), so I supose it must be on a movie about Elisabeth I (perhaps I am wrong and it is from the begining). Look on IMdB.
Thanks Salias100. I've spotted the scene now in an earlier section of Orlando in a trailer, but I don't think anyone's uploaded the song. It's a pity as it I remember it sounded beautiful. I guess I'll need to get hold of the whole film.
Absolutely superb movie... just saw it right before writing this... remember having seen the clip on YT, and it gave me the feeling I should enjoy it : I definitively did ! Wow !!! As say others comments, mesmerizing, mysterious, delicate... and very profound even though doesn't show up at the beginning... It reveals this aspect, like all the movie, like a woman in love, with great sensitivity... Guess not for everyone's taste... Not at all a usual JS fan, this song... I just love it too :)
I've been here on YT at the videos for "Bronski Beat" and "Communards",
trying to interest people in this cinematic masterpiece!
It was the first time I ever saw the magnificent Tilda Swinton or Billy Zane
for that matter. I'm sure this was also likely Quentin Crisps' adieu before
he passed!
Cheers!

me gusta. Acabo de rentar 'Elizabeth: the golden age'. Orlando la vi hace 10 años o más, en cuanto pueda la veo, no recuerdo esas 'metamorfosis'..
soymiguel 3 years ago 3
