I too was introduced to this gorgeous melody at 16; however, I first heard it performed by my idol at the time, the great trumpet player, Rafael Mendez. His was referred to as "The Singing Trumpet" because of his incredible ability to express emotion through his horn, almost like a voice. So beautiful. I first heard Estrellita as a 16 year old back in 1944 while serving on a Liberty ship in the South Pacific. We had one of those old wind up record players and someone had brought aboard a 78 rpm record of this beautiful song. Even with the terrible audio and all the scratches it entranced me, and it still does.
