Poor Alice & Uncas! What ultimately drew me to my husband was knowing he would FIND ME no matter what in that situation. This is a MAGNIFICENT movie. It's the last one I'd delete from my desert island list. The characterizations of British, French & Americans was so astute, presenting full glory & full warts, contrasted with poor Chingachgook. Madeline Stowe, ,DDL,RM,E(?) should have gotten academy awards! Hollywood HATES greatness! I wish Michael Mann would remake Cold Mountain with this cast!!

One of the most beautiful scenes ever. The whole scene from the setting to the writing to the musical score and the acting, all are done perfectly. Daniel Day Lewis has an intensity that is very hard to find anywhere else and it's just amazing the way he looks at her for a brief moment before going through the waterfall. And I just love the few moments we have with Uncas and Alice. To me, their romance is just as well done as Clara and Hawkeye's.

I haven't seem the full movie but I just finished the book. From what I have seen of the movie, I can tell there are many differences. For instance this scene does not happen. There is no Uncas/Alice or Hawk-eye/Cora. And alice doesn't jump off a cliff either. However I would watch the film just to see Uncas cause he was my fav.

I'm a big fan of Michael Mann, but this was too much of a chick-flick for me. The book wasn't, so much, just romantic action.

Kind of over-acted, too, except for Wes Studi and Russell Means. Studi was also in "Heat," another Mann film. Day-Lewis is not my cup o' tea.

Worth seeing, though, esp. for the scenery. Excellent cinematography.

because their powder for their guns was wet, and they would have had no chance against magua's legion at that time, so they fled to regroup and come back after them as the probability was that magua wouldn't kill them, and they could rescue them by suprise attack later ;-)

the reason they left is because their presence would have mad the Hurons more hostile and they all would have died. there was an entire war party of hurons, while Hawkeye, Uncas, and SuperDad are badass, their powder was wet and the Hurons' was dry. Plus, if they killed all the Hurons, they couldn't have done that epic end scene in the mountains

Actually its easier to fight multiple opponents when you are 'all bunched up'. They can't all rush at you at the same time. That means, its easy for Hawkeye and his superman adopted father to finish off Magua and his gang one by one. The waterfall's their best chance and they blew it by jumping off.

Yeah, its absurd, they actually believe that they have less of a chance since they can't use guns but ironically they actually have more of a chance since they are virtually untouchable when it comes to unarmed combat. This waterfall scene is probably the best chance they had to finish off Magua and his gang but instead of garbbing it, they ran off.

I mean, for all you know, all the men and the women may have been killed straight away upon capture. There were at most 20 enemy chaps and I would say they have little chance against the likes of Hawkeye and his 2 comrades. Besides, can't the English guy take out at least a couple of guys as well?

fantastic scene... this movie is already a classic, a must see for everyone older that 12 . I saw it at 8, and it influenced me in many things. Love of Cora and Hawkeye is very well portrayed, but I still prefer Uncas and Alice.. maybe because of the purity of both , and because they hadnt their happy ending..
