1989 - the year of the underwater monster. Whether it be a giant crab, a mutated fish man, or aliens that control water, the sea was where to be. And I loved EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!
@lamartherevenger There's another one called 'Endless Descent' (aka 'The Rift'), also from 1989, that's been somewhat lost to obscurity. I tried to order it from a movie and memorability shop at a local mall and they couldn't get it. They managed to get me a copy of Andrei Tarkovsky's 'Stalker', but not 'Endless Descent'!
Why does Miguel Ferrer always play such asshole roles? Oh, and I love the fact that you don't see Matt McCoy from Police Academy in any of this trailer!
Good grief. "The Abyss", "Leviathan", and "DeepStar Six" all in the same year? They say Hollywood is always in a race to be number 2. Remember when they had all those volcano movies all at once? Same phenomenon. If you can't break new ground, just stomp the old ground to dust...even if the "old" ground is only days old.
@greyeyed123 Based on the trailer, I guess that DS6 would be the worst of the above-mentioned films. The Abyss is great and Leviathan isn't bad but Greg Evigan as movie star? No way!
There were a ton of underwater monster films leviathan probabley the best in my opinion deep star six was ok then there was the rift or endless descent as it is so called and then there was lords of the deep which I havent seen yet so far I think it looked cool
1989 was such a great year for movies back to the future 2 Indiana Jones an the last crusade, batman, whats weird is that three movies almost identical in plot and setting were deep star six, leviathan and abyss wow that's just insane to me!
There was a monster in Waterworld -- one that The Mariner blows up (from the inside) for food. It looked a lot like the creature from this movie. I've often wondered if that was done intentionally as an homage to DeepStar Six.
@zhernanespinosa actually I think it's supposed to be a type of sea scorpion, do a search here for chased by sea monsters or walkig with prehistoric beasts for more info
@Casper3701 Not the same movie. Leviathan's creature is like a fishy necromorph. DeepStar Six has a giant rock lobster-looking creature with a sideways mouth. It only superficially resembles a lobster or crab, though. The fact that it eats people with its face proves that it's something else.
I have had memories of this movie ever since i was like 6 years old. I never knew what the movie was called and had always thought it was in one of the Alien movie series. I finally now know that the movie is called deepstar six and i intend to watch it ahha
To answer your question, they made so many underwater movies in 1986 because that was the year the Malco was discovered. I don't feel like explaining something so obvious so just Wikipedia it. Later
This movie was a pretty interesting popcorn thriller. As a kid, I thought the trailer was spooky, especially with the narrator talking in that deep voice. When I saw it though, I was amazed at how fun it was, especially when trying to guess who would survive and who wouldn't. Many of the deaths were kind of gruesome...some died at the hands of the monster, others died through negligence at someone else's hands (won't say who).
Thumbs up if you watch this in 2012! :D

Good movie, and what did I learn from it. That your bottom torso can definitely get cut or ripped off by a giant underwater turd, even in a JIM suit

i like the monster in this film pretty much you could call it a kaiju a real small one though not godzilla size

So wait... this movie and "Leviathan" both came out the same year? Did Hollywood not realize that they're also the same movie?

Wow, stupid-lookng monster. And not one that would survive at such depths since the available food sources at that depth would not satisfy it.

the bit where that guys veins burst when he is trying to escape in the pod without decompressing was gross

Good to see this. I remember a slew of undersea thrillers all came out in the same basic time, and I couldn't remember which one had which creatures.

A good Sci-fi/horror flick that's well worth being sought out for those who enjoy fun creature features.

Legend movie. It's a little bit slow, but I think it's edited perfectly anyway. Great "water movie" lol

Same producer as Friday the 13th. Fairly boring and cheezy . "Save your last breath." You'll need it, when you fall asleep watching this soggy flick.
