I read somewhere they are not allowed to sing this song anymore because its offensive and not politically correct since it objectifies women with the line "a pretty girl's eyes." Also that it only sings about male Airmen. What a load of Bullshit.
@ginjaninja1988 I know right! Screw their laws. They should worry more about Libya, Gulf of Mexico, Afghanistan, and other of the problems, rather than this fine music!
I remember playing and marching to this song in Drum and Bugle Corps at Lackland Air Force Base in basic training. Never knew there were words to the tune. Brings back some cool memories!!
Can't believe that someone besides myself and husband remember that song and Curtis LeMay. We were both stationed at Westover AFB in MA and married there. This new version of the Air Force song came out that year. LeMay would come in impromtu and he meant busiess. Thank God for men like him.
That is what I wanted to say but I wasn't entirely sure. My uncle flew from California in a -124 once, and it lived up to its name. He noticed a large piece of metal on the leading edge of the wing rattling away on takeoff and it didn't stop until the old bird settled down on the tarmac in Seattle. That was 50 years ago, and he still remembers that flight like it was yesterday.
Oh, this brings back memories. My brothers and I used to sing this song when we were playing. We lived near Andrews and quite often I could look out from my yard and see twelve Shooting Stars flying formation over the house. I also got to see an RAF Vulcan, and the Thunderbirds at REAL low altitude.
Thanks for posting. I've been looking for this Mitch Miller version for years. I also remember it as a TV spot in the early 60s. They used to show it at the station sign-on along with the National Anthem. In the 70's, the TV station gave the 16mm reel to the camera store I worked at in High School to test projectors. I must have seen it 100 times then, but I've haven't seen it in more than 30 years. What a great service song.
Rye Harbor State Park NH B-47 Low altitude runs, as the end of the video shows a B-47.... That kind of daily sightseeing for a 4 year old in '63 m ade it clear what he wanted to one day be.
Grew up as an air force brat and loved it.. My dad was a line chief so saw every type that landed. I did 4 years in 1960's but Vietnam got rid of ANY ideas I ever had about making the USAF a career!
Late October 1962.. Defcon 1.......as the Atlas, Titan and Minutemen ICBMs were warming up in their ICBM bullpens, and the Buffs were taxiing down air force runways, many USAF crews were enthusiastically humming this song as the destruction of Sovier Russia was mere hours away.
This is great. I'm 60 yrs. old and remember watching this on TV. I knew all the words then and never forgot them and I'm happy to find this today. They should still use this and shouldn't have changed the words to update it like they did. My favorite planes were the F89 scorpion f102 Convair and the F86 Sabre jets. I still live by the airport where I grew up. I saw em all. That 102 would shoot straight up in the air. I miss those planes. Thanks for sharing this video. It made my day.
This piece would play every Sunday morning at approximately 9:55 AM during the late 50s to early 60s on my local tv station. I have not seen it in almost 50 years!! Thanks for posting!!!!!

@ginjaninja1988 I wonder if when they sing Wild Blue Yonder they now have to sing "atta person, giver it the gun".

Mitch Miller was a master. I wonder if he did some of the radio commercials I've heard on old airchecks.
