  • Where's the "like" button for what NicWizz said? (I have actually seen Family live in the 70s and still think that some of their non-hits are at least as good as what made it into the charts)

    No mule's fool LOL

  • x factor is so below this excellence that it's not even worth the comparison.

  • The most original chord sequences for a "pop" record ever. Amazing it was ever a hit. Nowadays they wouldn't get on TV or radio because they are too original. True Genius!

  • @flaxonx3 That's right. David Furnish was manager of Family at this time and got Elton one of his first gigs in the biz.

  • I've seen Chappo in various line ups over the years, he's still great, and i never go home dissapointed. X Factor is shit, this band along with all the other greats would not get through to the second round.

  • me too - brilliant band

  • Oh I remember 1971, only just. It was without doubt a great time for music, festivals and free concerts in the park. Family were right up there with the best of them. Brilliant band live.

  • What a unique voice Chapman had

  • Love it! Wow I was 13 when this came out.

Check out the "Streetwalkers" stuff too - for more from Messrs Chapman & Whitney.

  • "In my Own Time" & "Burlesque" two 70's rock classics from the band from Leicester

Football, fantastic music, chasing the birds, and going down the pub with yer mates.... do today's teenagers have as much fun???? I very much doubt it.

  • I can remember this band being talked about in terms of almost reverence, such was thier esteem at the time.News at Ten reported"Family have just come on stage" one night!!!

  • there were two bands that people always talked about in england at that time, the beatles and family. especially musicians.

  • They were on up the college and my dad was the bartender from the local pub ... a few pints at 14 yrs old cemented my love for this band

  • Great band.Exposes all the crap that passes for music on such enlightened shows as xfactor.Should read Shitfactor.

  • Just watched this on BBC 4 seems like yesterday..............oh to be a nipper again.........

  • Bought it Loved it, wish he hadn't packed it in recently, great keyboards and amazing live act (saw them 72), far better than many of their contemporaries.

  • My old mates from Leicester!

    Happy days

  • @willnotallow i know what you mean wheres Rick......one of the best Leicester bands....and theres a lot....mike

  • I can remember seeing this on TOTP, my Dad said something like "What's this rubbish, it's just a row', I loved Family there and then!

One of the best bands of the 60/70s.

  • and now i think about it I remember seeing Family at Dustable Civic Hall (i think!) and someone sarcastically shouting at Chappo "Saw your picture in Melody Maker this week Rog! very nice!"

To which the ever subtle "Rog" leeringly replied "Did yer wank? Didja?"

    Lol!

Bet that bloke never shouted again!!

  • I saw a clip once where Chapman was laughing so much he didn't even attempt to carry on singing!

I've always thought it was a TOTP appearance - did i imagine it or does anyone else remember it?

  • yes, it was totp, and the audience were a bunch of kids! which was probably why chapman cracked up laughing

  • I wish someone would put it up, i'd love to see it again!

  • haha! haven't seen or heard about that one...there are a few TOTP's not in the archive, like their "Burlesque" appearance...

  • Lol! All i can remember is Roger at the mic as usual, then you hear him starting to crack, then the vocals stop and you see him still holding on to the mic, but his head is on his arm and he's just shaking with laughter!

The rest of the band are standing around, miming half heartedly and grinning all over their faces!

    It's absolutely classic!

  • I remember it well. Roger seemed to be rather drunk. The rest of the band weren't laughing. I don't think they ever did TOTP again.

  • ...simply the best live band on the planet...saw them live in 1973...awesome

  • glad to see more old videos of Chappo and the Lads. this was a great band that never got its due here in the States.

  • God how I loved this band way back when all my mates were into teeny bop !! Fantastic

  • Got to agee but the teeny bops took over. But Roger is still going! where are the teeny bops now?

  • brings back happy memories

  • Ahhh sweet memories revived. One of my favourite live bands of the 70's . Brilliant vocals by Roger as usual.

  • why aren't more people listening to this

  • How can five people make such a refinded pandemonium with the sound systems that were around in them days? Awesome isnt quite adequate.

  • One of my Favorites from a long time ago. thanks. John.
