  • watching this makes me want to try harder to land my axel well.

  • @infinera06>> Thats your opinion!

  • oh. meh. bawlz.

  • What the hell Great Britain

  • Personally, I would have given her the win in this free skate over Yamaguchi, but Yamaguchi deserved gold since only Ito came close.

  • 5.6???

  • starting at 3:23, her soul joins hands with fate. if that is not art, I dont know what is. Scott Hamilton's freak out speaks for the world. Thank you Midori!

  • i was 15 watching this in the living room with my parents, when she threw in and nailed that second triple axel, I jumped into the air screaming and accidentally broke the glass coffee table in the process. I was laughing and crying and my parents were staring at me in disbelief. The next day I had to confess to them that I was gay. Midori made coming out real easy...

  • have you noticed that when she fell on her first triple axel the music was kind of sad, or unhappy, and when she lands her second triple axel the music become happy again? The timing of it, in other words, was magnificent. I was so pleased for Midori despite getting the silver. Go Ito! :)

  • Eso es crecerse ante la adversidad. Es una clara muestra de bravura, coraje y valor, gran lección de vida.

  • In Figure skating, we need the level of skating to go up now. Figure skating afterall is a sport. More women are going to start trying triple axels in the future. It's not too late to learn triple axels.

  • Kristi Yamaguchi sucked, Midori deserved this gold >:(

  • @NettieKay how did she deserve gold when she sucked in the short program?

  • when she flies into that second 3a, she seemed to suck the very oxygen out of the entire arena. She becomes a sort of black hole, all the other performances get sucked into that triple axel. the beauty of her sheer athleticism is almost overwhelming to me. Too bad the judges didnt have "OMFG SHE ATE A PLANET WITH THAT JUMP CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT-PLS PUNCH ME" marks to give that night.

  • @ViardotVSGrisi why should they have given her that mark when she had already fallen on her first one, and that's what she was known for. it would have been different had she landed the first 3A and it also had been the very frist 3A to be landed by a woman. not to mention she is just ok in her artistry....way better than tonya harding but thats another weakness in Ito's routine.

  • Ito's game in the ice was a completely different universe than the rest of her competitors. she was a rocket. Marks ultimately don't matter. Remember how Jill Trenary won the world's in 1990? I bet her face melts a little when says today "I was the world champion in 1990". Did Kristi win this meet? yes. Does Midori Ito transform into an eagle when she jumps? yes. Yamaguchi was a fine, world class skater and will always be remembered as such. Ito was a superhuman phenomenon.

  • @ViardotVSGrisi yes in that aspect i agree. ito will go down for her jumping ability and ahead of her time. but the current japanese girls right now can outclass her because they have managed to put not just phenominal jumps together but actually have grace, flexibility, great spins, and musicality

  • @agators212 i disagree with you (and thats fine, i bet we use different detergents too. Tide forever!). Ito may have lacked FINESSE but she was very sincere and straight forward in her artistry. She's a ballerina next to Bonali and Tonya Harding (now, THEY were trucks). In her jumps, the speed and position in the entries and landing are exemplary and have aesthetic value, fluidity contributing to the arc of movement. as to your last statement: only Ito will surpass ito. none like her today.

  • @ViardotVSGrisi true we dont have to agree but i think we both have a great appreciation for this skater. never was a fan of harding other than the height of her jumps but she always lacked control/smoothing out of them. bonali, i only like her layout stepout backflip. but again arakawa, asada, and ando are on a whole different level compared to ito. they are more of a complete package

  • @agators212 someone in the CBC coverage of this routine said this, which I think sums up it all up: "Flawed, desperate, and unspeakably thrilling. The breakneck pace just leads up to the second triple axel which is done so beautifully and so in perfect time with the music that the breath chokes off." about the girls today we will continue to disagree.

  • @ViardotVSGrisi we probably will but atleast we both can argue without calling each other names and stuff. its hard watching michelle kwan vids and reading the comments on how the fans of kwan, lapinski, and cohen...wait change that the STANs of those skaters hurl insults at one another.

  • @agators212 i save my insults for the opera battles on youtube. I can get real ghetto in those.

  • @ViardotVSGrisi ahaha...thats funny, i guess i do the same when i comes to christina aguilera stans. like really? some call her GODtina or LEGENDtina or JESUStina. scary shit. haha

  • The speed is amazing. Very athletic and exciting!

  • so beautiful...

  • i wonder if yuna kim wouldve been able to land that jump....

  • @Crazy4KoreanDrama

Yuna Kim can't land triple axels, but I really think she can if her coach put some time into it.

Yuna Kim is awesome at delivering programs. She doesn't need a triple axel to win, so it's unecessary for her to learn it.

  • @audreyeatworld i thought yuna already landed a triple axel..... or was that a toe loop..... lool

  • @Crazy4KoreanDrama

An axel jump has a forward take-off. A toe loop is taken-off backwards, and the skater does this by picking their toe into the ice. I think it's definitely a toe loop. :)

  • Actually, she planned TWO triple axles in the program already. However, the coach let Ito to decide whether to do the second one or not. Since she failed the first one (if she landed it, she would've done a triple axle-triple toe loop), she decided to attempt the second one.

  • Love Midori--her speed, her power and her exuberance.

  • One of the best female jumpers ever.............Midori was way ahead of her time. Mao Asada is great but doesn't have the height and speed of Midori.

  • The height on her jumps is insane!

  • Scott Hamilton said it perfectly..........Incredible and Gutsy Performance for Japan's Midori ito.........!! Had she performed her Worlds 1989 or 1990 program. She would have won the Gold, hands down! She is still my favorite woman's skater/jumper of all time!!

  • I loved Ito but she was put in the "athletic" box (like gymnast Elena Shoushounova) and her scoring suffered due to that.

  • @Shakeshack78 I agree and disagree with you. Midori WAS like shoushunova, but both were artistic, it was just a different body type and they focused on different strengths. Look at shoushunova's 1988 AA FX. That is dramatic, artistic, and severe (like her hair). If you compare her to TODAYs gymnasts, Shoushunova was an artist and so was Midori. I think Midori was a singular artistic and athletic phenomenon. just look at the true heart that takes place as she prepares the second 3A. That's art!

  • Midori was better than Yamaguci in terms of jumps that night. There's NO WAY that Kristi should have gotten 5.9's for a fall and a doubled jump! She also only did one combo to Midori's two. Midori fell trying to land the most difficult triple jump. Landing it after three minutes was truly gutsy and difficult. Kristi was much better artistically but she should NOT have gotten 5.9's for a flawed performance.

  • @Karosanyo Don't put everything on the jumps. There are a lot more technical issues to consider other than jumping, which is where the 5.9's come from. Midori has the strongest jumps, yes, but weaker spins, spirals, and edge quality.

  • @kamwrites I know that it's not all about jumps. I think that Kristi's spins and spirals were even with Midori's. Kristi's artistry and edge quality was better, but I still don't think that she should have 5.9's for a fall and a doubled jump. I feel that Midori beat her on the techincal mark.

  • @Karosanyo Nah. :) Even though she has great jumps, they verge on being out of control at times and the landings leave a bit to be desired. But I respect your opinion. I'm just glad Midori pulled out that second triple axel. Redemption!

  • @kamwrites Midori had fantastic edges, very good spins and steps, mediocre spirals, unbelievable speed and ice coverage. Thus she was and still is the best skater in termns of technique.

  • @kamwrites: I disagree about Midori not having better spins that Kristi. Midori's spins were fantastic, extremely fast, and, as Peggy Flemming said of Ito's layback, a "beautiful position." Kristi had better spirals, for sure, although Kristi's spirals were not that great either, compared to say Kwan and Cohen. What frustrated me in 1992 was that Ito had her best ever choreographed short program, but her lp was one of her weakest. Her 1989 and 1990 frees were choreographically wonderful, imo

  • WOW!! So her triple axel 3 minutes into the program was improvised???

  • @MusicLuver093 yup. she most likely had a triple lutz/triple toe planned (like in the 89 world's). that second 3A is what the olympics are all about. it was a movie moment.

  • Seems like Midori went backwards artistically with this program. I think her 88 Olympics programs was by far better artistically.

  • @skaterdude1962 no way, this is an inspired program. She wasnt very emotive in her face (particularly at the beginning, all nerves). but I think after the fall, when all is lost, right as she enters the adagio section, the program and her become one to the point that I swear, the music inspires her to do the second 3A.

  • Wow... the commentator totally orgasmed at the landing...

  • 伊藤みどりさんは銀

  • Back in 1992, Midori became the first lady to land the Triple Axel. In 2010, Mao Asada followed the Midori's legacy to complete three Triple Axel in competition. I'm so proud of both Midori and Mao. Such an amazing athlete, always going for a higher challenge, not skating conservatively for a title.

  • 涙出る…この勇気は本当にすごい。

  • you know..i never got why Midori was docked for her artistry.. through out her skating career she's had one of the best laybacks..foot work sequences..and yes she lacked a tad with extension..so did alot of ladies.. she had the whole package..including of course incredible jumps..really a rare talent..

  • watching this kind of girls competing just makes my day perfect (:

  • wow ... scott knew it was going to be a triple axel before she got into the air!

  • "Not artistic"?

Utter bollocks. Artistry is not looking all plastic-pretentious-girlygirly. Artistry is being natural.

Ito was the most artistic woman skater in our lifetime.

  • @arsoys I agree. I was captivated by her artistic performance.

  • @infinera06

Artistry doesn't have to be all about the stereotypical feminine style. Midori was different, had individuality who was energetic with a contagious smile. You can't force a character into someone. Midori had artistry by being who she is.

  • @audreyeatworld Obviously, you're the only one who thinks so. The judges knew what artistry is, you don't.

  • @infinera06

Midori Ito didn't have artistry? Okay that's your opinion. But Midori Ito is perhaps the greatest female jumper in the history of figure skating, and was way ahead of her time. Respect her for that.

  • @audreyeatworld Wrong again. The best jumper would be Mao Asada. The most artistic was Michelle Kwan.

  • @infinera06

Everyone has different opinions. Yes, I agree that Mao Asada has smooth jumps with nice flow, and Michelle Kwan has heaps of artistry. But you can't forget that Midori is a heroine to Mao, and many other skaters. Back in the day, Midori's jumps had outstanding difficulty and she totally deserved that silver medal. I don't even see why you're hating on her. Skating evolves, even if you think Michelle and Mao have the best jumps or artistry: Midori had the best jumps OF HER TIME.

  • @arsoys OOOOOHHHHHH........I don't think so. She's part of that incredibly athletic skating group but artistically challenged...like Elvis Stojko, Surya Bonali and Irina Slutskaya among others. They just didn't have the whole package.

  • She looks like Kristy Yamaguchi, I couldn't almost tell them apart for a sec.

  • I thought they said that Mao Asada was the first skater to hit a triple axel in olympic competition? Why was Scott Hamilton lying on 2010 NBC TV???

  • @calcifer1976 I think he meant she was the first to land two in one competition - one in the short and one in the long program? That's what I'm thinking he meant...? Hmmm...

  • @puaalaaumoe no, he meant three, one in short and two in long, and she´s the first to accomplish it

  • I think he said Mao was the first to land 2 triple axels in the Olympics. :)

  • @Cheydow Mao landed 3 3A

  • @nicashi No,... but w/e. I'm pretty sure it was only 2.

  • @nicashi Sry, I stand corrected. I just meant in the long program she landed 2 and overall she landed 3 in the whole competition. Oops .. ;)

  • @Cheydow :)

  • @calcifer1976 Scott Hamiliton said Mao was the first to land TWO triple axels in the Long Program in Vancouver.

  • @socalmuscleboi168 Just goes to show that two triple axels does not a good programme make, at least when not of the Ito quality, and esp. when the overall effect is as leaden and dull as it is with Mao. I've rarely seen such a dull skater, with such lethargic jumps.

  • Awesome! She is a legend. A perfect triple axel at the end of the program!

  • wow her triple axel is huge and she enters and exits with so much speed! of course she skates with amazing speed throughout as well!

  • She so fun to watch. She's bouncy, perky, speedy, and full of energy. Like Scott Hamilton says, unbelievable courage. What a heart. So gutsy.

  • No one lands the triple axel on the ladies side better then Midori Ito. Best one she ever did was at the 1990 Worlds. It was huge almost like the ones that the men do. Asada's tripe axel isn't impressive at all though you have to give it to her for even trying to land them.

  • I love Sasha too, but if youre not interested dont watch, and most certainly dont post comments like this on the video of skating's legendary moment.

People (fans) will get offended. Just saying. I respect your opinnion, but please dont comment here, if youre not interested...

  • how old was she here?

  • She was 22.

  • She looks so much younger. She was spectaculer here... Not too artistic, but amazing techincly. What a legendary comeback!

  • Yes, she's always such fun to watch, and I sure miss watching her in competition. I think all Orientals look younger than their years. It must be their healthy lifestyle! All in all, Midori Ito is a very gracious lady, which makes her so charming!

  • seriously, someone should slap that british judge real hard. what a low score that british bitch has given to midori ito.

  • Yes. This bitch's score is way too low compared to other judges.

This means she did it on purpose not to give a gold to an asian country. Is she a judge to judge what?

  • yea, speaking of biased judges. and now the asians are dominating the figure skating world now. like yuna and asada. they made the american skaters looked like they don't even exist in this world.

  • Always LOVED Midori! She was always such a gracious lady. :)

  • She nailed a triple axel well into 3:00 in her LP. What a great champion.

  • You mean the second one? Scott Hamilton was right there and called it-she threw a second triple axel and landed it-that took all kinds of guts after the first one.

  • OK.. you meant the triple axel at 3:35. It was awesome. It is a lot better than Asada Mao's triple axel. Have a good one!!!

  • @gabbaman77 Yes that's right-that's why I said in my original post that she threw it WELL into (I meant after) the 3:00 mark.

  • yes, the height was 20 times higher than asada's triple axel.

  • @gabbaman77

um, it was definitely a triple axel.

  • The jump at 3:00 was a triple loop, not a triple axel. I always loved Midori. She's such an awesome jumper!

  • I did not say she threw a triple axel AT the 3:00 mark. I said she threw it WELL AFTER the 3:00 mark.

  • The triple axel was at 3:37. Good for her!!! :)

  • @USAGymnast not really, her total score with Yamaguchi is only 0.6 lesser than Yamaguchi. So, if she didn't fall, she would've won.

  • the scoring doesn't really work like other sports (i.e. gymnastics). you don't just add them all up. each judge's score for tech and artistry is combined to come up with an ordinal. whoever has the most first-place ordinals gets the higher placement. because the long program is weighted more heavily, it's easier for the person in first coming into the long program to win. someone in 4th (midori) has to hope the people ahead of them make mistakes so they can move up. the SP fall killed her.

  • it's so unbelievably amazing to see Midori actually added another triple axel by HERSELF. And she landed that one! That was actually not part of her choreography was it?

  • Yes. I wonder what jump was scheduled there. What a sportswoman! I've watched this again, and it is a lovely program and still the British judge 5.6 and 5.5?! I agree WTF!?!?!

  • she didn't really interpret the music like kristi did. in my opinion, kristi felt the music. her jumps were timed perfectly with the music, her choreography was difficult and interesting and told a story. midori was technically great, but her choreography was boring. as scott said, "and you wait for the next jump."

  • Yes, it was planned.

  • She surely landed the triple lutz/triple toe comb?? She is an amazing performer and charming person.

Personally, I think she has amazing presentation. I really think even the judges mix up 'artistry' and 'presentation'.

WHAT was the British judge watching?? SO wrong! And, I am British!

  • @muscleboi4use i know! i mean wtf? 5.5????

  • she's so cute!!!

  • no she didn't

  • Midori did a great Axel. At least she snuck ahead of Kerrigan.

  • The best long program in Albertville! The most pleasing to the eye!!!

  • Did Midori land a triple Lutz in this performance? I can't see it.

  • @kazzicup she didn't, looks like they changed the her program to do a double-lutz-triple toe, seeing the issues she had had in practices with the 3lutz after her short program fall.

  • The Great Britain judge comes out of nowhere with the 5.6 among the 5.8 and 5.9 and the 5.5 among the 5.7 and 5.8..... :S

  • I agree w/mlc2005 that Midori was ahead of her time. If she would have skated her 1988, 1989 or 1990 performance -- she would have won. We all love MIDORI!

  • she is amazing

everybody is in love with her,i"m sure

  • if she didn't fall. she would've won.

  • I think she couldn't win gold since she came in fourth in the SP, even if she would have won the LP, she still couldn't have won.

  • I think because she was SO ahead of her time technically, she was never noticed for her beautiful artistry... really undermarked on that.

  • I really think Vern and Scott is one of the top 5 announcing/commentating duos ever. They were the perfect combination. It's a shame the Winter Olympics were moved to CBS. I hated to see them not working together anymore. :(

  • I agree totally. Well said. Verne Lundquist adds so much intelligence and insight into his commentary and it's awesome.

  • wow!

  • THis really is an inspiring program... I can't believe she landed a triple axle late in the program after not having landed it at all during the practices... She's incredible.

  • This performance exemplifies the spirit of the Olympics. When someone can come back and triumph over adversity the way Midori Ito did, that's the mark of a true champion. There's other ways to be a champion other than winning a gold medal.

  • Scott Hamilton kept saying that everyone didn't have good artistry, and those ones were the non-American skaters he happened to be talking about.

  • 3:36

    解説者の気持ちが分かります。信じられない!

  • 挑戦する気持ち。

    勇気を持つこと。

    そういうことの大切さを教えてくれているように思います。

    みどりさんはやっぱりスゴい。

  • haha, she almost made me cry. she is a great champion, and also has really nice personality too. people say she is not cute or whatever, but i like her a lot and she always makes me smile:)

  • she always smile like a happy-go-lucky person. that's why we love her too :)

  • her face is always to nice to look at. her smile brightened up the whole rink arena.

  • oh what might have been. interesting that for the men's LP, the technical mark was the tiebreaker but for the ladies it was the artistic mark. had the reverse been true, ito would have won the LP by a score of 7-2 (similar to her win at lalique). it wouldn't have mattered since she was in 4th, but still.

  • wow her spins are so fast!

  • I agree. This was a lovely programme. Such guts to put in the 2nd triple axel after missing the first one. Poor girl had tremendous pressure on her at this event. Everyone thought she would have no problems after figures had been eliminated. Still prefer her 1989 programme but this was classy.

  • See but I think she is elegant, of course she's technically amazing but I always thought the commentators (particularly that retard Scott Hamilton) were up their asses saying she wasn't artistic. Personally I think her presentation was just as good as Yamaguchi's comparing their Olympic programs.

  • She is not elegant or artistic but I love her, so much personality, passion and doesnt quit! Your a idol Midori!

  • No way dude, this program was nothing but elegant and refined. That spin at the end was incredibly fast and graceful.

  • She's amazing just not elegant in a true sense of the word, like I say shes an idol and I love her, one of the best.
