Shiiiit, we had a Christmas tree, one day, i go to the room where it stood, not aware what was happening, found out by the web on my body that that night, thousands of baby spiders were born and decided to leave the tree and explore the 'world' , I panicked and set the tree on fire, wasn't a good idea... the dry tree set on fire very fast and damaged the room, not to mention the smoking alarm that scared the crap out of my parents, at least, the spiders where dead.
My Goodness! I experienced this today ( 20 Apr 2011 ) and I have filmed by ball of spiders too! My spider ball wasn't as big as this one though, although I have seen spider-balls much the same size as this, and I once saw three medium-sized spider-balls all within inches of each other, all 'tangled' in that mass of webbing.
That's excellent. Good to know my humble effort has been useful and educational too. Would be great to see the photos. Yesterday in the garden I saw the first few baby (small) spiders making their new webs.
I just found one of these nests in the garden two days ago. I had never seen one before. I got a couple of still photographs but when I went to show it to my son last night, found that they had already dispersed. Thanks to your research I now know the name of the spiders and have found that such a nest is not entirely unique. I will post my pictures here if I can.
Although the spiders are very common and awhile ago I saw one shedding its skin (didn't know they did this) I have only ever seen the one nest. I have seen some heavily pregnant spiders though hanging around in their webs.
I only just discovered the spiders name: It took a dose of tonsilitis and visit to the doctors to find that out (thanks to a BBC gardening magazine)
Nice to have comment(s) that don't involve kiling the little beasties... :)
I recently saw a 'parent' version of one of these shedding its skin, mainly legs. I tried video capturing it but it didn't come out well enough to post here :(
It's incredible the way they nest. I found a nest a few days ago and it apparently happens to be baby black widow spiders because the mother black widow comes out at night with them. Normally I leave things alone but they are poisonous and they were on my gas meter so they had to go.
What kinds of spiders are those? I remember seeing a nest of spiders just hatching. They're actually kinda cute when you look at only one of them through a microscope.
@trivuong the only spiders that can actually kill adults are the funnel web spider (which is hardly seen because they live in holes in the ground) and the red back spider but those take time to kill you so you can get an antidote quickly.
The Black widow is hardly lethal for adults it just makes you sick for a couple of days, old/sick people and children can die from a bite though
if all else fails, use a shovel
