In an attempt at regaining media focus and appear as an activist, Natalie Maines made a visit to Folsom prison to check on prisoner care. In a bid to ensure evening news coverage, she slipped away from the prison management, disrobed, and ran naked through the exercise yard. The several hundred prisoners in the yard rushed toward her and had her gang-dressed in less than a minute.
Natalie was disappointed since "everyone knew Folsom had Weapons of Ass Destruction, but she couldn't find them"
I loved the fact that radio wouldn't play any of their songs and they still won the Grammy for Album of the Year. That shows that the critics know what good music sounds like. This song is just a big FU to radio.
@1976cannon Factoid for retards: Practically all loss in play in 2003 on C&W stations were made up for by play in other genres, right through 2006. Natalie Maines went to California and spoke on a rock station saying they were the only station playing them. @1976cannon "critics". I guess you mean the voters for grammys, which are made up of entertainers, producers, and supporting casts such as engineers. They have minimum requirements for being involved in produced music. A person describing himself as a music "critic" as his qualification could not become a member of the grammy voters. And just like Maines is no political pundit, most singers aren't qualified to judge themselves or others. Popularity IS a maeasure. DC popularity? Meager at best.
do u know wat i dont get how this vid has dislikes i mean if u dont like it y r u listing 2 it HATERS but i luv this song and so do alot of other people thumbs up 4 positive comments!!!!
@jackiepalmmm Weren't "speaking their minds" and weren't "sticking up for what they believe". They got tossed for being disingenuous afterward as they were for their pandering for profit comment. Seriously, douche, get an education.
@Leonid3s I wasn't trying to say she was denied her right to free speech or that the fans were denied their rights either and no it's not just the famous who have the right to free speech. I just think that it is wrong to take one comment and turn into something that has damaged their career. How many celebrities have we forgiven for everything from selling drugs, using drugs, weapons charges and even domestic assault. For once in our lives we really need to be open minded.
It was not just one comment. But the one comment was enough to seriously damage her career. If that were it... IF she had listened to her PR people... IF she had gone into damage control mode and quit publicly throwing more fuel on the fire...
But that is not the case. She kept it going, after making a huge mistake.
I can only assume, with all the "we support you Nat, we hate Bush too" people, that she thought she could cross genre and leave country music.
@blackbirdfly518 Don't worry, Natalie. We're doing a fine job of forgetting you. Your ponder about your pander and your pitiful loss in profits is perhaps a penalty you think was too punitive. Perhaps policing your pandering pucker would have been the proper position to assume.
@Therealmensa Nice job of wasting your time commenting on a video that you obviously don't like. If you don't like the music, don't listen to it. No one is forcing you to.
@blackbirdfly518 Who said I came here to listen? Nice job of wasting bandwidth on an idiot comment. If you can't post intelligently, don't post. No one is forcing you to.
@Therealmensa I did post intelligently. I stated my opinion. I bet you're having fun trolling around on videos you don't like. You obviously enjoy causing drama with strangers. You won't change anyone's opinion by posting on this video. I believe that is what you're trying to do, it won't work. The Dixie Chicks are fucking awesome.
I believe at least part of his point is trying to get people to recognize reality, such as Nat was never denied her Freedom of Speech.
If you read back through the comments, you will find a great number of comments either stating explicitly or implying that Nat was denied her Freedom of Speech.
And if having someone tell you the Truth about what Freedom of Speech is and is not does not "change anyone's opinion" when they clearly dont understand the concept...
Great song writing regardless of your personal political leanings. It's important for people to voice their truthful opinion whatever they may be. No one should be in fear for their lifes because they speak their mind.
You are allowed to have a different opinion, but a persons right to free speech should be up held.
@Leonid3s Of course, everybody should have free speech, rich/poor black/white conservative/liberal famous or not. Although famous people (unfairly) have a greater platform to air their views, making fame a lot of responsiblity.
@mindinsolitude And what does this have to do with the Dixie Chicks? They said whatever they wanted every day. No one infringed on their right to do so. They have no inalienable right to popularity or profit. They have no right to be disingenuous and pandering, then say they were "victims" because millions disagreed with their use of free speech for profit, especially the way they did. Our 1st amendment says the GOVERNMENT won't punish. It doesn't say the public has to put up with mouthy singers
@Therealmensa No body should punish Free speech, That means Governments and individuals. I never said everybody has to put up with mouthy singers. IF your at their concert your allowed to leave, if they're on the TV you can change the channel. If their opinions bother you, you also have free speech and can exercise it against them. When people do this it creates healthy balanced arguements.
People made threats to their lives and burned their CD's, thats punishing free speech.
Threatening to harm someone is not protected speech. There are Laws already to deal with those people.
However, if you are burning your own property, that is your Right to dispose of your property as you wish. Doing so publicly, as part of a demonstration, is also protected speech.
As long as people are allowed to burn the US flag as protected speech, I wont blink twice at someone burning CDs or driving a tractor over them.
@mindinsolitude If you are at their concert, you've already given them money. Contrary to every other entertainer at the time, the DC's REFUSED to refund unwanted tickets after her comment 2003
@mindinsolitude Exercise it against them? Millions did. Threat letter: connected ONLY to a friendly radio station and the DC PR people themselves. No one else. Burning CD's punish free speech? ROFL!
@mindinsolitude You seriously need to get an education on the rights afforded US citizens while IN the USA by our Constitution. You obviously know nothing of it.
Sorry for the fact that people in America don't have an open mind and understand that we do have the right to FREE SPEECH! If you don't like her words then please don't listen to the rest of the entertainment world when they make their public opinions known! I LOVE THIS SONG!
I have great respect for these women. Too often, those who become role models do nothing to remind us that they, like us, are human with their own ideas, beliefs, and opinions. Instead, they cater to the public, making things we want to see or hear.
I hope that the Dixie chicks return to the scene. (Not a country listener, so if they have, forgive my ignorance) I'd sure as hell buy their Album.
And that is the problem with the "I dont listen to country but I would buy their *insert item* crowd.
The DC DID put out another album, a 'greatest hits' compilation, several years ago and several years AFTER 'the comment'.
It got to 35 on the Country album charts, dropped to 47ish, then disappeared.
If everyone claiming they support the DC had bought a copy, it would have debuted at #1, or at least in the top ten, as so many of the previous albums did.
The people 'supporting' Natalie, her comment and the Dixie Chicks are not buying their albums. (or most arent).
Maybe some other entertainers will learn a lesson from this. Entertainers should entertain us, not discuss their political, social or religious beliefs.
I used to love the DC music. Now I cant hear it without thinking about the politics surrounding them. That does not make good entertainment. It makes them political icons. The pay is not nearly as good.
@Leonid3s Oh you poor thing, Let's all have a pity party because you can't help but think of their political views when you hear them. How dare they make you think. Damn women going around having all these opinions of their own. SHIT! I'm a woman.....
@Leonid3s (continued) Personally I think it's important for those who are in the limelight to be upfront and honest about their beliefs. Just because idiots like you are overtly sensitive to someone voicing their opinion that happens to clash with your own, doesn't mean everyone should just shut up and do as you please honey bunches. ;) k?
Making me think is not the issue. Associating yourself so strongly with a single subject that you automatically cause that subject to be the first thing people think of in regards to yourself is.
It is not just me. If it were, the DC would still be every bit as popular, if not more so, than they were before the comment.
This is the same reason some actors try so hard to find "different" parts, after becoming famous in a particular role. Those that fail are limited.
Your comment is irrational. IF the WHOLE COUNTRY was thinking what they said, there would have been NO REPERCUSSIONS.
Other entertainers said worse about Bush and nothing significant happened to their careers. Why? Because they said things the MAJORITY OF THEIR FANS (not the country) agreed with.
Nat DID NOT VOICE THE OPINION OF THE MAJORITY OF HER FANS. THAT is why she experienced significant repercussions.
@Leonid3s look person, if you feel so strongly about her comment then why are you on there youtube channel? like seriously, and Im a fan and she said exactly how I felt about Brush, so seriously get a life and move on it happened years ago dude smh.
@JaK I dont care about the comment. What I care about are the people who dont understand their basic Constitutional Rights, such as the Freedom of Speech. Or lack the ability to think analytically.
This is real music, not the shit like Mike Posner in the pre-video advertisement. This has emotions and real meaning in the lyrics, not pointless lyrics demeaning women and growing up in the "Ghetto"
it's a complete failure of an album and as hatefully sold a product as I've ever encountered. It's been deemed an "important" album in the popular press, presumably because it's one of the first times that a recording artist, in marketing a new record, has done little more than throw a vitriolic, bile-spewing public temper-tantrum and been championed for the bravery of doing so.
They spoke out Free Speech, They were against a war over oil no WMD's as the Bush Administration claimed and they publicly said they was asshamed of him.
That is what they did!! stand up and be a Free American
ALL Nat said was, "Just so you know, we’re on the good side with y’all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas."
Not a word about WMDs or oil.
It is also interesting they didnt say this publicly in the US first. A lot of people that might have supported the comment, opposed its manner, place and timing of delivery.
So, what were they right about? Their opinion. Nothing more.
This song was co-written by Dan Wilson from Semisonic (of "Closing Time" fame"). It is pure pop-rock brilliance. This song deserves to be considered among the top tier of all-time country singles.
Perspective for DC apologists: With at least 15 years of the spotlight, and with all the controversy surrounding this song, it has garnered 3.2 million views; many of them from those simply wanting to post their opinion. Meanwhile, The Band Perry, with practically no exposure until three years ago and without controversy of any kind, has a video of the song "If I Die Young" posted for half a year less and has been viewed 49.5 million times. Dixie who?
Here is my standard outlook. If it is stupid and it works, it is not stupid.
If Nat's behavior had garnered more fans and increased revenue, then even though I disagree with her behavior, I would still recognize it as a valid business strategy that worked well for her.

This is why I hang out here. To educate you people that dont understand one of our basic freedoms, Freedom of Speech. You claim to support it, but you dont even know what it is.
Freedom of Speech is the Right to express yourself verbally without fear of GOVERNMENT sanction.
Notice, it does not convey the Right to be understood or liked. It does not give you the Right to no consequences of your speech.
The DC expressed their Freedom. So did their former fans.
I have loved this band since I was a little girl and I still adore them, especially this song and that they weren't afraid to speak out. The world needs more strong women role models in society like the Dixie Chicks!
I have so much respect for this band. Natalie, for standing her ground and not taking back how she felt just to please other people, and also for putting on such a brave face through the whole ordeal with death threats and such. Emily and Martie for being such amazing band mates and friends for supporting Natalie and sticking with her and the band even after their fallout from the country music scene. These are three incredibly admirable women and true role models.
@Leonid3s witch is less pathetic than stalking dixie chicks fans on youtube since 2006-2007. christ, you and ggalen aka whatever the heck his username is now need to let it go. it went from a debate to an obesession. get a hobby, leonid3s and therealmensa
1) I have been gone from all the DC lists for a long time.
2) When I show back up, what do I find? People asking the same stupid questions and making the same stupid comments.
Find someone else to answer these people's obvious questions and comments and I will be glad to go back to the more interesting videos. Hell, I dont even turn the sound on for visiting this page any more.
@Leonid3s Um, excuse you, yes I have researched this and I've watched the documentary "Shut Up and Sing". She did apologize to Bush for being disrespectful, but she did not however take back what she said. I think this song is proof itself that she stands by her statement. Get a hobby and quit trying to correct people over the internet.

Sugarland - 2004 "Baby Girl", the first single from their multi-platinum debut album Twice the Speed of Life. Second album in 2006, Enjoy the Ride-first two #1 singles, "Want To" and "Settlin'", and won the duo a Grammy for "Stay". Third album, titled Love on the Inside-three #1 singles. Fourth album, The Incredible Machine was released 2010. After it was certified platinum, Sugarland had sold in excess of 14 million records.Nettles and Bush also write all of the band's songs. Dixie who?
I think its great what they did. They spoke their mind. The loss fans but they did not quit. They gained a stronger fan base and bigger audience by transitioning out of Country. This album won 5 Grammys. So take this an inspiration and don't be afraid to speak your mind.
I saw a few comments that they need to say sorry to country fans...For what for saying what the rest of us at the time wanted to say... The only thing I disagree with them on was it was not done on american soil.... I mean pink isn't getting riped a new one for sing her song..That was way worse than what they said..What both bands did took balls. About time someone showed them
I still don't understand why they caught hell for what happened. Many other people have voiced dislike for Bush, hell Green Day made a whole album about it. So I have to say I'm disappointed in my fellow American's for treating the Dixie Chicks like this. Yea, the FUTK shirt was a bit much but death threats?
@Leonid3s I don't understand how people can treat someone like crap over saying something that they feel. Yea you can not agree with it but country turning its back on them?
Do you remember what was said? Not just the "we are against this war" (said on foreign soil to an anti-war crowd) but also the comments made during her feud with Toby Keith? And probably the most damning thing she ever said as far as alienating her fans, that she didnt want to be in the same CD player with Reba.
You have any idea how many people LOVE Reba?
Any PR guy in the world could have told Nat she was committing Country Music suicide.
She also said they no longer considered their music "country". Implying they were bigger than just that one genre. That plus the Reba comment... would have been enough to kill their careers in Country music.
She didnt want Country Music fans. She got her wish.
Now all these "I hate country music, but love this song" fans can support her.
Unfortunately for her, there are not enough of that group who will spend money on her, to fill venues for tours or take her albums to #1.
You want to know the funny part? Country music fans are EXTREMELY forgiving. AFTER you apologise and attempt to make amends. Country music is full of superstars that were "less than perfect".
If Nat wants to be on top in Country music again, she will have to eat a lot of crow. She will have to stand up and alienate all those 'we hate Bush too' people. She could start by just apologising and sticking to it. No take backs, like her previous apologies.
She could publicly state; she let herself get carried away in the politics and passion of the time period and she deeply and sincerely regrets her comments and realises her fans didnt want to hear about her politics. They just want to hear her sing.
After that, start a charity tour, just like a real tour, but every penny gets turned over to some local and NON-POLITICAL charity. Tour a few dozen military bases.
A couple years of that, and they would have a STRONG chance at a come back.
Notice... in this scenario she doesnt even have to say she was wrong about her opinion of the war in Iraq or her opinion about Bush.
But, this is pretty much a no-brainer. Any good PR guy would have thought of this. The implication is, since the DC has not done this and their albums are still languishing in the discount bins, they decided against it.
So, they STILL dont want country music fans, except on their terms.
@Leonid3s Leonid, are you still playing with teens while your poor wife and kids remain fatherless and husbandless? The computer has taken your life from you. What a sad piece of shit you are! LOL! You lose...AGAIN!
@Leonid3s Leonid, are you still playing with teens while your poor wife and kids remain fatherless and husbandless? The computer has taken your life from you. What a sad piece of shit you are! LOL! You lose...AGAIN!"
@ShikaEd Why are you still arguing with Leo? He'll never stop. He'll never get off me! Even though you're right and he's wrong, he'll never stop! PLEASE BURN HIS HOUSE SO I CAN REST IN PEACE!
@ShikaEd they werent rejected for speaking out. they were rejected because people disagreed with them. being country, most of their fan base was southern and also liked george bush so thats why their sales dropped. they werent rejected by people agreed with them. i repeat: they werent rejected for speaking out.
@ShikaEd Look how right they were, With Bush and the Patriot Act open the door to Obama NDAA. If we had, had more peoples stand up to Bush maybe we would not live in the war zone we live in today. Because the NDAA declares the USA a battleground.
@Leonid3s Leonid...I won't speak as to the issue you have with Obama and the troops still overseas, but coming into an office immediately after Bush left it, means that he has to do a lot of damage control. In my limited understanding (Not American, nor do I have the time to keep up with things sadly) Obama is almost a polar opposite of Bush in his beliefs. If that's the case, then he needs to build his office from the ground up, while trying to keep the public happy enough to >Cont
Then you are not paying attention. Obama's foreign policy, ESPECIALLY his military policy is very much like Bush's, after he PROMISED one of the "first things I do in office" would be to bring our troops home.
His domestic policy is different and not in a good way. He refused the mere idea of a balanced budget amendment. The national debt has grown at a faster pace under Obama than it did under Bush.
At this point, I would vote for anyone willing to balance the budget.
@Leonid3s DUDE PISS OFF I DONT CARE, ABOUT YOUR OPINION ANYMORE, GROW A LIFE, BRUSH SUCK ASS AND ITS HIS FAULT WE ARE IN SO MUCH DEBT SO TAKE YOUR STATS AND SHOVE IT DUDE GRRRRR................your really annoying the hell outta me -___-
You are proving this is about "Bush" in your opinion. Bush has not been the President in 3 years. When do you start blaming Obama for what is going on? Never mind. It was a rhetorical question. You will never blame Obama for anything.
IF you "I hate Bush" people actually bought the DC albums and concert tickets, then the DC would be topping charts and making more money than ever.
@ShikaEd They were disingenuous in their comment. She immediately apologized to Bush and in her first stateside interview, said they would never use the stage for their political beliefs and that's not what she was doing that night. For almost a year, she used every opportunity in the USA to deny it was anything more than a pandering JOKE. When it would serve her better to mean it, however, she said she "didn't want to be a flip flopper"...and flopped again. Latecomers lapped it up.
@soxnpats4lyfe UMM Sorry to disappoint. Sadddam Hussein never financed, originated or planned any attack on US soil. We went to war in Iraq on trumped up and erroneous "intelligence". We wasted 4500 young lives and over a trillion dollars over Iraqi oil that eventually China got. Brilliant. Oh and by the way, it was Obama who ordered the hit on Osama bin Laden. Bush said at the end of his presidency bin Laden was not a priority. Just reporting facts.
Remember, critical information leading to OBL was developed under the Bush presidency using techniques BHO was against, while detaining enemy combattants in Gitmo, which BHO was also against.
BHO was also CiC the last 3 years of the Iraq war and EXPANDED the war in Afghanistan using the same "troop surge" technique he was against when Bush used it in Iraq.
BTW, the only ones I ever heard saying we were in Iraq for cheap oil? Liberals.
@Leonid3s 1)Agreed, intelligence from GWB was used to get bin Laden. 2) when in a quagmire you have one objective to get out while saving face, hence the troop surge 3) BTW noted liberals like Alan Greenspan, Paul O'Neill, and liberal publications like the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and The Economist all report it was a war for oil.
When in a quamire, your one objective is to get out. "Saving face" should be a lot less important than the lives lost AFTER Obama took over.
Please cite your Wall Street Journal article that says we went to war for oil.
I am tickled pink that OBL was executed by US forces. I openly and widely proclaimed BHO did a great thing in doing so. BUT, without the intelligence generated by methods BHO was absolutely against, it never would have occured.
Its such ashame people wave the peace symbol, it has become very popular within the last two years, well its always been well known...People send their kids to school wearing it, when the fact is, they are for the wars and fighting.
This band is the reason I picked up a guitar ten years ago when I was 13 years old. They helped me realize how much making music and having something to say with it means. They, and their music, will always mean the world to me.
We're an independent label trying to make it in this game and the best way to do that is by being more known on youtube.One of the ways we stand out is we help unsigned artists get more fans by uploading their songs for a new fan base
You can change our future with one simple click.
Please thumbs up so other people can see this and check out our channel and comment with feedback if you like,also if you think we could improve.
If you like check the other artists we have over 100 vids up!
Still loving the Dixie Chicks in 2012! I wish the Dixie Chicks still made music, they would be making a lot of fans happy (: There soo amazing and have a lot of courage to sing such a powerful song!
@ILoveMyHorse12341 exactly they shouldnt be boycotted pr anything for speaking there opinion i thought we came to this country for freedom of religon and FREEDOM OF SPEECH!
The stupid WHIGGER Judeo Christian's STILL WANT war. They will gladly support the attack of IRAN for the Jewish terrorist state of Israel. They Just can't SEE these are the same FUCKERS THAT 'MURDERED' the Christ.
@Therealmensa Not sure if youre a Devil Jew or a ignorant Whigger The chicks were ashamed of our President, they just have no clue OUR Govt is RUN AND CONTROLED By the Jew Zionist. What can i say..if your a jew we are mortal enemies if your a whigger i hope you gain understanding.
@cessna65423 Absolutely sure you are a racist. You forgot to throw in New World Order and Illuminati. Where is your statement about the US government being responsible for 9/11? What kind of pussy conspiracy theorist are you? GET WITH THE PROGRAM! Cover the bases or they'll take your paper badge and decoder ring away, dufus!
I hope Natalie isn't upset that the sisters tried to go off on their own. You can't blame them Shit happens. I don't blame Natalie either. She was right with what she said. The kind of shit our government did is the reason why people are starving in third world countries. I don't think any one person is to blame. It's not ALL on the president, but if your going to run for president of the United States of America, you BETTER BE WORTHY OF THAT TITLE!
@Trina9852 Not just the government... They lost about half of their audience for just speaking their mind. Even got death threats. I mean... Damn... Like they sing: "How in the world can the words that I said,
Imagine if Pink or U2 came out in strong support of the Republican candidate for President. Think they would lose any fans over that? Of course they would.
Nat lost a lot more than "half of their audience" by continuing to attack the country music community.
@Leonid3s So much for "The land of the free". And "Home of the brave" is also not really appreciated I guess, cause if someone is brave enough to state their opinion you just can't handle that. That's what the United States of America have come to...
@musician1971a And people like you are exactly why I end up reading and responding to these things.
Nat was free to express her opinions. EVERYONE ELSE WAS FREE to disagree with her. Everyone else gets to exercise their Freedom of Speech also. They are also free to exercise their Freedom of Association. They are free to decide to buy other entertainer's merchandise instead.
Freedom for all, INCLUDING those that disagree with you.
@Leonid3s Of course they are! Whether it's really an opinion or just "He's from here, so we love him anyway" remains to be seen though. It's death threats and things like that that make this whole thing dirty.
Death THREAT. Not plural. And a lame one at that. If you really wanted to kill someone, would you tell them when and where? Arrest the guy and move on.
Do you understand the contradiction inherent in your argument?
The DC didnt attack country music. (your words)
They did (implied) but it was YEARS later.
Ok, so they got exactly what they wanted. A lot fewer country music fans.
@Leonid3s And she didn't attack the country music community, she just spoke her mind about the former president. But maybe the country music community are just sheep following a leader instead of thinking for themselves and accept other people's opinions?
Marty Mcguire is on record saying, " "I'd rather have a smaller following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith. We don't want those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do."
Reba is one of the Queens of Country Music.
They didnt want to be in the same CD player as Reba.
@Leonid3s That was years later, everything they sing about here had already happened. And after what happened I can totally understand they would say they don't need a following like they had. Who's not paying attention...?
I hope after what happend to Dixie ch. every American citizen understands that every war is a big business,cause the people of all the other countries knew this a long time ago....
I'd love a makeup tutorial for her makeup in this video. It's so ... ahh I just love it c:

@Therealmensa
DC Popularity? I like the yardstick you used recently. Video Views.
Using only VEVO vids for comparison:
This DC vid has been up for 2.3 years and has 3.2M views.
The Band Perry, You Lie, 1 year, 8M views.
Taylor Swift, Safe and Sound, 1 WEEK, 2M views.
Taylor Swift, Our Song, 2.7 years, 55.1M views.
Selena Gomez, Naturally, 2.2 years, 149.4M views.
Pistol Annies, Hell on Heels, 7 MONTHS, 2,7M views.
The record companies MOSTLY care about money. Politics be damned.

As for "the feuds".
Toby Keith has been touring constantly since Nat's public melt down.
Reba McEntire is touring through 2012.
Dixie Chicks attempted a summer tour as an opening band for the Eagles in 2010. They scheduled 8 venues and had to cancel 2 for lack of sales.
If the people that claim they "support" the DC actually bought tickets and CDs, the DC would be fine.
Toby Keith and Reba are the two the DC didnt want to be in the same CD player with.
They got their wish.

For once in our lives we really need to be open minded.
azrielcat88 2 days ago
@azrielcat88

@blackbirdfly518
Well...
Leonid3s 23 hours ago
Great song writing regardless of your personal political leanings. It's important for people to voice their truthful opinion whatever they may be. No one should be in fear for their lifes because they speak their mind.
You are allowed to have a different opinion, but a persons right to free speech should be up held.
mindinsolitude 3 days ago 2
@mindinsolitude
As long as you include Freedom of Speech for the normal citizens and not just the famous people, then I agree with you 100%!
Leonid3s 3 days ago
@Leonid3s Of course, everybody should have free speech, rich/poor black/white conservative/liberal famous or not. Although famous people (unfairly) have a greater platform to air their views, making fame a lot of responsiblity.
mindinsolitude 3 days ago
@mindinsolitude And what does this have to do with the Dixie Chicks? They said whatever they wanted every day. No one infringed on their right to do so. They have no inalienable right to popularity or profit. They have no right to be disingenuous and pandering, then say they were "victims" because millions disagreed with their use of free speech for profit, especially the way they did. Our 1st amendment says the GOVERNMENT won't punish. It doesn't say the public has to put up with mouthy singers
Therealmensa 3 days ago
@Therealmensa No body should punish Free speech, That means Governments and individuals. I never said everybody has to put up with mouthy singers. IF your at their concert your allowed to leave, if they're on the TV you can change the channel. If their opinions bother you, you also have free speech and can exercise it against them. When people do this it creates healthy balanced arguements.
People made threats to their lives and burned their CD's, thats punishing free speech.
mindinsolitude 3 days ago
@mindinsolitude
Nat got her say, then her fans responded

I have great respect for these women. Too often, those who become role models do nothing to remind us that they, like us, are human with their own ideas, beliefs, and opinions. Instead, they cater to the public, making things we want to see or hear.
I hope that the Dixie chicks return to the scene. (Not a country listener, so if they have, forgive my ignorance) I'd sure as hell buy their Album.
Hasaryu 4 days ago 20
@Hasaryu
Leonid3s 4 days ago
(continued)
The people 'supporting' Natalie, her comment and the Dixie Chicks are not buying their albums. (or most arent).
Maybe some other entertainers will learn a lesson from this. Entertainers should entertain us, not discuss their political, social or religious beliefs.
I used to love the DC music. Now I cant hear it without thinking about the politics surrounding them. That does not make good entertainment. It makes them political icons. The pay is not nearly as good.
Leonid3s 4 days ago
@Leonid3s Oh you poor thing, Let's all have a pity party because you can't help but think of their political views when you hear them. How dare they make you think. Damn women going around having all these opinions of their own. SHIT! I'm a woman.....

TheLillieofthevalley 4 days ago
@TheLillieofthevalley
Leonid3s 4 days ago
(continued)
IF the DC wanted to be political figures, then they behaved appropriately.
IF they wanted to be "anti-Bush" icons, then they behaved appropriately.
IF they wanted to become media sensations because of their politics, then they behaved appropriately.
IF they wanted to continue a career in country music, then they behaved inappropriately.
Has nothing to do with what I "please", but what the MAJORITY of their fans think and how they react.
In this case, the DC FAILED, badly.
Leonid3s 4 days ago
@Hasaryu I agree, kudos to them for taking the stand hell, they said what the country was thinking at the time so hey,
JaKayla2008 3 days ago
@JaKayla2008
It really is that simple.

it's a complete failure of an album and as hatefully sold a product as I've ever encountered. It's been deemed an "important" album in the popular press, presumably because it's one of the first times that a recording artist, in marketing a new record, has done little more than throw a vitriolic, bile-spewing public temper-tantrum and been championed for the bravery of doing so.

Excellent point.
Here is my standard outlook. If it is stupid and it works, it is not stupid.
If Nat's behavior had garnered more fans and increased revenue, then even though I disagree with her behavior, I would still recognize it as a valid business strategy that worked well for her.
However, the evidence does not support that view.

This is why I hang out here. To educate you people that dont understand one of our basic freedoms, Freedom of Speech. You claim to support it, but you dont even know what it is.
Freedom of Speech is the Right to express yourself verbally without fear of GOVERNMENT sanction.

ShikaEd 1 week ago 15
@ShikaEd
Yes, any death threat was absolutely uncalled for and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
But as to your not understanding, what is there you dont understand?
Green Day and the DC have entirely different fan bases.
Green Day's fan base agreed with GDs sentiments and statements, so the continued to support GD.
The Dixie Chicks fans, on whole, did not agree with Nat's statements and stopped supporting the DC.
It really is that simple.

Leonid3s 1 week ago
@ShikaEd
Leonid3s 1 week ago
@ShikaEd
Leonid3s 1 week ago
She could publicly state; she let herself get carried away in the politics and passion of the time period and she deeply and sincerely regrets her comments and realises her fans didnt want to hear about her politics. They just want to hear her sing.
After that, start a charity tour, just like a real tour, but every penny gets turned over to some local and NON-POLITICAL charity. Tour a few dozen military bases.
A couple years of that, and they would have a STRONG chance at a come back.
Leonid3s 1 week ago
Notice... in this scenario she doesnt even have to say she was wrong about her opinion of the war in Iraq or her opinion about Bush.
But, this is pretty much a no-brainer. Any good PR guy would have thought of this. The implication is, since the DC has not done this and their albums are still languishing in the discount bins, they decided against it.
So, they STILL dont want country music fans, except on their terms.
Cool. Wish granted.

DJ10609 1 week ago 2
@DJ10609
Liberals.
Just reporting facts.
Leonid3s 1 week ago
@Leonid3s 1)Agreed, intelligence from GWB was used to get bin Laden. 2) when in a quagmire you have one objective to get out while saving face, hence the troop surge 3) BTW noted liberals like Alan Greenspan, Paul O'Neill, and liberal publications like the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and The Economist all report it was a war for oil.
DJ10609 1 week ago
@DJ10609

@DJ10609
Also, let's make sure we are on the same page as to defining "war for oil".
The "No blood for oil" protests of the early part of this century claimed the US and UK were going to "seize the oilfields" of Iraq.
Well, it has been a long time since the beginning of that war. TWO US Presidents have declared the war over.
So, how many Iraqi oil fields are in US possession now?

This band is the reason I picked up a guitar ten years ago when I was 13 years old. They helped me realize how much making music and having something to say with it means. They, and their music, will always mean the world to me.

I hope Natalie isn't upset that the sisters tried to go off on their own. You can't blame them Shit happens. I don't blame Natalie either. She was right with what she said. The kind of shit our government did is the reason why people are starving in third world countries. I don't think any one person is to blame. It's not ALL on the president, but if your going to run for president of the United States of America, you BETTER BE WORTHY OF THAT TITLE!

sandycheeks0345 2 weeks ago
@Trina9852 Not just the government... They lost about half of their audience for just speaking their mind. Even got death threats. I mean... Damn... Like they sing: "How in the world can the words that I said,
Send somebody so over the edge
That they'd write me letter
Sayin' that I better
Shut up and sing or my life will be over"

@musician1971a
Yeah, so hard to understand... Really?
Imagine if Pink or U2 came out in strong support of the Republican candidate for President. Think they would lose any fans over that? Of course they would.
Nat lost a lot more than "half of their audience" by continuing to attack the country music community.
She didnt want any country music fans.
She got her wish.
Leonid3s 1 week ago
@Leonid3s So much for "The land of the free". And "Home of the brave" is also not really appreciated I guess, cause if someone is brave enough to state their opinion you just can't handle that. That's what the United States of America have come to...
musician1971a 1 week ago
@musician1971a And people like you are exactly why I end up reading and responding to these things.
Nat was free to express her opinions. EVERYONE ELSE WAS FREE to disagree with her. Everyone else gets to exercise their Freedom of Speech also. They are also free to exercise their Freedom of Association. They are free to decide to buy other entertainer's merchandise instead.
Freedom for all, INCLUDING those that disagree with you.
Leonid3s 1 week ago
@Leonid3s Of course they are! Whether it's really an opinion or just "He's from here, so we love him anyway" remains to be seen though. It's death threats and things like that that make this whole thing dirty.
musician1971a 1 week ago
@musician1971a
Death THREAT.
So why are they (and you) complaining?
Leonid3s 1 week ago
@Leonid3s I wanted to reply to this, but I think I'll just wait for you to see the wrong turn in your comment...
musician1971a 1 week ago
@musician1971a
What wrong turn? I am done until you reply or until someone else makes the erroneous statement that Nat was somehow denied her freedom of speech.
Then we start all over again.
Here is the part I dont understand. All the good little citizens running around screaming about "Rights" without knowing what the Right is.
Hell, Googling for 10 minutes would be an immense education to some of these people.
Sad, but true.
Leonid3s 1 week ago
@Leonid3s And she didn't attack the country music community, she just spoke her mind about the former president. But maybe the country music community are just sheep following a leader instead of thinking for themselves and accept other people's opinions?
musician1971a 1 week ago
@musician1971a
You really are not paying attention are you?
Marty Mcguire is on record saying, " "I'd rather have a smaller following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith. We don't want those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do."
Reba is one of the Queens of Country Music.
They didnt want to be in the same CD player as Reba.
Wish granted.
Leonid3s 1 week ago
@Leonid3s That was years later, everything they sing about here had already happened. And after what happened I can totally understand they would say they don't need a following like they had. Who's not paying attention...?
