  • Obama campaigned in Massachusetts against Scott Brown; he's now a senator. He campaigned in New Jersey against Chris Christie; he’s now the governor. He campaigned in Virginia against Bob McDonnell; he’s now governor. He spoke for the health care plan; it became less popular. He campaigned in 2010 for the Democrats, they were shellacked. He flew to Copenhagen to get Chicago the Olympics; it was the first city eliminated. There is no evidence that he has the rhetorical powers he is relying on.

  • So ah... hookalaka, would you claim that George Bush communicated more eloquently, precisely??

  • Comment removed

  • "Barack Obama has a communications problem. His reputation for eloquence and argument is highly exaggerated—at best. Speech after speech, appearance after appearance, the president has failed to persuade the undecided that his views are correct, much less win over opponents. You can blame partisan polarization, the institutional limitations of the presidency, the diversity of new media, whatever. The truth is, the more Obama talks, the worse he performs." --Matt Continetti, The Weekly Standard

  • Tupac is playing Nintendo.

  • obama could sale a person a car with no wheels and convince em its in style

  • Of all the Presidents, Obama gives the greatest speeches, but he's one of the worst Presidents of all time (with Bush of course), Obama has already spent more money than Bush and has had two BAD years of unemployment 2009 (9.3) and 2010 (9.6). Obamacare is such a disaster. Talking is just about all Obama can do. Obama is such a screw up.

  • Dyson is able to represent his truth clearly to all who are interested enough to listen.I admire him for that i.e his intellect and his simplicity of expression.

  • Who cares about his speech .We paying 4.00 for a gallon of gas!!

  • Dyam, Prof Dyson, it is always amazing to hear/watch you speak.

You think fast and you talk even faster; and you are not even female. lol

And to top it off, you make so much sense.

I guess so many years of applying your childhood 'gift', makes you extremely skillful with it.

  • 0:09 "orality" isn't a word professor.... I think you mean "oratory.".....

  • @okturus 0:09 "orality" is a word okturus.

  • @kingdevon101 I stand corrected....

  • I would like to meet Michael Eric Dyson.

  • 1 corinthians 2:4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

  • He admires people who are like himself.

  • Ohhh ! Good diction and sentence structure combined witha craftiness any salesmen would be proud of and put to good use.

    Smart...like a fox .

Don't be chicken. Put your trust in this real Slick guy.

  • really its impossible to tell if he is a good or great orator due to the fact that before almost any of us ever heard him speak we were told how great he was ,

so our judgment is already tainted .

  • I agree with this man !! People are just not willing to accept that an african man like Obama has such an impressive personality and can actually engage people. Obama 2012 -Wish I was american ;)

  • actons speak louder than words

  • OMG, I never understood the blah, blah, blah.

I'm interested in listening more to stuttering fools that no one gives respect too but turn out to be correct. So what guy that can makes a cacophony of words have style?

  • I would say it still differently: style and substance can amplify meaning and message. Interestingly, too, sometimes when people want to dismiss an articulate person speaking potent but uncomfortable truths, they often say ' oh, well, it's just rheotric''

  • Historians in a decade or two look back will shake their heads at those who praised Obama's oratory skills. Obama can't even connect with his audience except with his fundamental base, the obamamaniacs. He needs to improve his facial expression and speaking tone so as to make people feel he is speaking to them, speaking from the heart. Like Chris Mathews said he has got to get rid of the god damn teleprompter.

  • I think it's really interesting to see how elevated the grammar level is...is this how everyone talks in general? are we inspired by him? or just trying to sound smart?

  • @ML0007 Try Ocham's Razor (spelling might be wrong)

  • To bad he talks shit. I don't understand why people are surprised that he is such a failure.

  • The bottom line is Obama has supreme intelligence and oratory power that politicians will sell their children to have. To that order, he is so much more than a politician; after all, Bernard Shaw stated that politics is the last resort of the scoundrel!

  • @Ooga001

Are you joking? Obama couldn't speak in public without Jon Favreau his White House Staff Speechwriter. Without a Teleprompter he would be as idiotic as Bush. At least Bush didn't need a teleprompter, he mangled the english language with pride.

  • @Romansteel13 you people freak me out, that's right you need to say something negative to be noticed anyway, but you have to stay in your hole,no one will ever take you seriously.

  • @Luvvamanwayne

    Your racial bias is showing.

  • @Romansteel13 you should know

  • wow

  • people on here are dying 4 their opinions to be heard

  • Try giving a good one? Try living up to what you have said.

Anyway, dude you are not black. Looking at you, I'd say you might be 1/4 black, maybe on your best day. My son has "kinky" hair because his grandfather was black.

So that makes you black..... or does it make you want to be black...

  • I mean this respectfully. Dyson has always sounded like he is trying to sound eloquent and it comes off unnatural. That is not meant as any sort of slam. It is just the way he sounds to me personally. It is true that it sounds better than ebonics, but there is just a lot of overkill in his manner of speaking. Communication is more than using 50 cent words to get a point across when 10 cent words will communicate your point better and to a wider audience. He also needs to slow down.

  • He speaks very rapidly, and all his sentences run together, which can make processing his ideas more challenging.

  • @carl6188

I agree, Dyson is a pseudo-intellectual black man who thinks he's god.

  • @Romansteel13 Thanks! I was thinking about these words. "We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men were created equal..." at the time those words were penned, they meant something different to many people. Even today, Women might feel left out of the statement. At that time Blacks were not even considered fully human, so they were probably not intended in the statement in many people's minds.

Truth is beautifully simple and should be understandable to all. "Self evident"? Hmmm?

  • @Romansteel13 he's 10 time the man that you could ever HOPE to become.

  • @Luvvamanwayne

Seems I have struck a nerve.

2 replies in under 10 minutes. You must be angry =-).

Yes, talking fast gives you the deception of intelligence.

Only fools like you think he is smart.

    Here endeth the lesson.

  • @Romansteel13 guess what? you still can't be anything near Prof Dyson, get you 15 mins of fame here & now, lol. You get your hard on by trying to put others you see as a threat down.

  • @Luvvamanwayne

Prof? LOL, you're a funny kid shrouded in naivety.

This man is a joke, all of his publications are about guess which race? BLACKS.

He caters to the black audience. If Obama wasn't black, he wouldn't even be on this show my main man. Your racial bias is showing. I'm 10x the professor Dyson is. He is a professor of religious studies (JOKE LOL), while I'm a professor of Astrophysics in the hardest UC in the planet. I rest my case.

  • @Romansteel13 now the truth is coming out clearer as we go along, you THINK that the Prof Dyson shouldn't be where he is because you can't be there & for your information I knew him long before I ever heard the name Obama, you feel that you're a Prof of the TOP University in the world,so why should this black man get so much air time & I'm here a white guy who's smarter & working at the BEST University on the planet, only can get my 15 mins of fame on YOU TUBE?? lol man eat your heart out!!

  • @Luvvamanwayne

Nice assumption, white guy? LOL, I love black people, always dragging race into every argument to make them look superior. I think someone has a siege mentality. Google it, since you most likely don't know what it means.

  • @Romansteel13 are you actually a Prof? talking about how long & how many questions & answers those are real petty stuff, you're the angry person because Obama is intelligent & so is Prof Dyson it has you all worked up,because you're a NOBODY like me,it is your belief that people like YOU should be on the fore front & because you can't to hell with those supposed lesser men, like I keep saying eat your heart out & stay in your hole bitch, lol

  • @Luvvamanwayne

Obama is intelligent?! AHHAHAHAHAHA, the man couldn't even talk without a teleprompter. You must be joking. Or are you actually serious? And for Dyson, talking fast doesn't make you smart my main man. I have explained it before.

  • @Romansteel13 exactly what I'm talking about,it's sooooo difficult for you to see anyone else as intelligent apart from you,I know you ,I've dealt with your kind & they're always haters, feels that the world is against them because nobody notices them,& want to show how smart you really are but ends up being the joker in the pack, sorry man.Life is not fair, I can tell you that with authority .

  • @Luvvamanwayne

Nah, I know many intelligent black rhetoricians, dyson and obama aren't one of them. Once again, you assumed. Making an ass out of yourself like always =-).

  • @Romansteel13 well Mr Wanna be,there's nothing more for us to talk about, you & only YOU think that you're so smart, & I know that Prof Dyson is 10 x the man that you can HOPE yes only HOPE to ever become,& President Obama is the man,you can do one out of 2 things, eat your heart out or go & drink some poison.

  • @Luvvamanwayne

What do you base this on? Because I don't agree with your black hero? Lol, you are so angry and indignant its very telling. Your racial bias is showing, as I said with my previous statements.

  • @Romansteel13 hey you don't have to agree with my BLACK heroes ,they're mine & I'm proud of them, you have to be proud of whoever is yours,I could care less what you think,YES I LOVE my race,& when NOBODY like you try to put them down I will speak up,you have the heart to talk about racial bias, when you were the one showing it right through , you showed your anger from day one & trying to turn it on me,lol. It's a preconceive belief that we blacks are angry, I don't even live in the USA & won't .

  • @Luvvamanwayne

Wait, How am I racially biased when you assumed I was white and I'm not? I think your wires are crossed my friend. Too much incoherent psychobabble methinks.

  • @Luvvamanwayne

You can't even form a sentence with any semblance or degree of literacy. It's a sad day for the black community, when blacks like you are so uneducated.

  • @Romansteel13 there we go again, the best that you can do is try to put people down to make you feel great, you're a real impotent imbecile, not my fault bud,you need to see a Dr,you can't get a hard on by putting people down, you have a girlfriend? guess not ,sad case but I can't help you bro.

  • @Luvvamanwayne

I'm not putting you down. I'm trying to help you build your grammatical and comprehension skills since they are of a petulant 2 year old. You taking offense only proves me right.

  • @Romansteel13 to be honest with you,I feel sorry for you,you are a sicko go get some professional help,& thank you for trying to help me,Mr concerned professor.lol

  • @Luvvamanwayne

I'm sick because i'm correcting your errors? What kind of non-sequitor logic is that?

  • @Romansteel13 YOU are the one that was & keep talking from a racial stand point & trying to turn it around on me,typical. Feel that you're smart & everybody else are assholes,it;s eating you out that a nobody like me can describe you,a wanna be,man there's NOTHING you can say to hurt me, I KNOW you already,a sad person for not getting the recognition that you THINK you deserve, keep on trying, you'll get there someday,ok?

  • @Luvvamanwayne

too long didn't read, all I read was an andy warhol quote. Quoting Andy Warthog doesn't make you smart my black friend. He was a anti-chauvinistic gay pig, who thought he was an intellectual and an Artiste. Much like yourself, no wonder you quoted him. I loved how you assumed I was white. Typical black mentality, blaming everything on the white man. (I'm not white, so you just made yourself look like an ass).

  • @Luvvamanwayne

The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which an unskilled person makes poor decisions and reaches erroneous conclusions, but their incompetence denies them the metacognitive ability to realize their mistakes. The unskilled therefore suffer from illusory superiority, rating their own ability as above average, much higher than it actually is, while the highly skilled underrate their abilities, suffering from illusory inferiority.

    I rest my case.

  • @Romansteel13 thank you for making my case for me,Prof Dyson really got you riled up,you want to hit me with big words to make yourself look intelligent ,you definitely feel left out, sorry man. But you don't have to put another intelligent man down to look good, wow! did I quote Andy? didn't even know it,I'm just this dumb ass guy making my point, hitting you the intellectual with the TRUTH & that hurts ,it really does,it wasn't meant to be but that's the way it's turning out.too bad for you .

  • @Luvvamanwayne

I'm not riled up, I think you are. 10 replies under 1 hour. Sounds like anger to me. You got angry because you disagree with my opinion. All I said was he's not as smart as he claims to be. You wanting the solidarity of your racial bias, defended him without thinking. I destroyed you on every level, verbally, mentally, and most of all psychologically.

  • wow

  • What mess from the small clouded brainwashed racist mind of the person that commented 4 weeks ago prior to myself! Hell is on earth, right here and now., hate keeps you from seeing the true reasons why. But the hate will shift when dem Chinese start takin over... wonder who the superiority minded will blame for everything wrong in America then?

  • RayJ778 <---That gets the award for the most ignorant comment on youtube. Obviously he knows nothing about micheal eric dyson. Micheal has did nothing but help and aide the black community. And what is being whiter mean anyways? Black and articulate = whiter? Go read a book idiot.

  • thank u & i will read a book. i'm reading one right now & it's called "tokyoblackout". it's about a couple; a dyke & a homo who fell in love with each other, but they're afraid to call themselves straight because of what the public might think about it. After this one, i'm going to read another book called "tokyoblackout likes it in the butt" by tokyoblackout.

  • @TokyoBlackout LOL that guys wasn't worth your time, don't let his comedy stress you. they hate to see intellectuals as black males. Even some blacks hate to see other blacks like that. So naturally they take on the "crab" role of trying to bring them back down.

  • Fuck You!

  • what makes someone white if they are not white? You are stupid because you are not smart

  • The bible says we are all the same and that we should love one another as Christ loves the church. I belong to a Christian organization that was founded by a black man, G. T. Haywood. I cannot find myself a christian and be a racist, for the notion of racism is dependent on the theory of evolution. We are all made in the image of God.

I oppose Obama on his policies, wholeheartedly. But he is an amazing speaker.

  • Do i like his policies? Goodness no, I have long stood against abortion in every form, especially when the child is out of the womb and still alive. Obama does not. I also oppose raising taxes on any american, period. He does not. I oppose his ideologies, not his color. We are all of one blood as the bible says. We are all one people. "Race" was invented by Darwin, not by Jesus.

  • No doubt that Barrack Obama is the greatest speaker our country has ever had. As a southern white male, personally i love to hear him speak. His "Yes we can" speech was absolutely wonderful, especially the end where he began to preach.

  • White America hates Blacks who can speak well!! White tries to imitate them!!

    Nice speech Dr. Dyson!!

  • Michael Eric Dyson is the shit,he go hard for black people

  • Ooh! he makes a good point.

  • Obama is a big black orator. This guy is good too.

  • he also isnt black neither bro , atleast this is as cloes as you'll ever come cause lets face it blacks cant even read . atleast the majority . worse case two terms at the most .

  • Such a bloody idiot! Black people can't read, at least the majority? Ignorant comments based on biased thinking that has no bloody foundation!

  • He really insults Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy by admiring the vehicle of the message rather than the message itself. Dr. Dyson..."you ain't saying nothing" either, to quote your words.

  • You're missing it. He extolled the virtues of both message and vehicle by referencing style as it's own form of substance when in concert with a profound message. When you listen to Dr. King, Dr. Dyson or Pres. Obama, you'll hear men with a profound understanding of how style can affect substance, and the way in which people recieve said substance. At no point did he suggest that one choose one over the other.

  • receive. only cuz i care bout you :) and you spoke in articulate tones.

  • @BRP1968

its not what you say, it's how you say it =)

  • @BRP1968 Dyson speaks in constant iambic pentameter. I find it rather trite and predictable. Obama is even worse. Too many "ahhh's" "umm's" and "hopey changey"

  • Obama is just another lying ass politician.

  • Style != substance it's simply the vehicle by which you present that substance. Extolling a persons oratory skills from speeches written by others is IRONIC.

  • People like Obama's speeches because we believe what he is saying and it has a true human quality. It's like spreading love. Articulation and Intelligence are so sexy and real.

  • I honestly believe this guy talks to hear himself talk. Dude, come up for air! Yes, there's truth in what he says, but his delivery can make you lose interest. Did he actually say at 0:40 'It's about connecting with your audience"? Ok Dude, work on that. Take a breath here and there and stop talking like a pompous orator who needs to stroke his own ego. Blah, blah, blah. It's such a turnoff.

  • Well...he was attempting to articulate the very loaded subject of Obama's oratory style and why it is people on all sides view as they do, as well as representing all popular perspectives on it. He did it in 3 minutes and did it thoroughly, thoughtfully and seemlessly. I understood, enjoyed and learned from it. I'm not sure what your expectation was, but I have to assume that you didn't expect a respected orator, minister and scholar NOT to elaborate in his own style.

  • i'm guessin KaySirahSirah was a student that Dyson failed or sth

    ----------------

    and reflect..

  • "Style becomes a vehicle for substance" very well stated Mr.Dyson.Love your knowledge!

  • @MrJacksonvill Style CAN become a vehicle for substance. But if there is no substance, what then? Top Oratory skills by a leader, especially in the case of 20th century Germany and Cuba, can get people to follow any idealogy.

  • Dyson makes me wnann go read a book lol

  • For real, LMAO.

  • Michael Eric Dyson bumps Jay-z in his car..nice

  • Dyson is a bit off on this. What people have criticized is not Obama's ability to conduct great speeches--Dyson, interestingly enough, has confirmed and affirmed that point--but the substance behind the remarks. That is, how are those speeches going to translate into substantive political action that protects the vulnerable.

Obama received the most money from Wall-Street. His team comprises on Wall-Street cronies and sympathizers. His drones are bombing innocent Pakistanis; more than words

  • 1) Dr. Dyson articulated the very real criticisms people make about Pres. Obama (mostly Black people, as he is speaking to EbonyJet).

    2) He had more Wall St. Money because Wall St. ALWAYS rides the leading horse. Every candidate had Wall St. money.

    3) His advisors are sucessful business people...period. Who better?

    4) As far as Pakistan: Pakistan policy has been a slippery slope for over a decade. His action toward Pakistan (at the Afghan border) is...well... "presidential."

  • I wish he was my professor

  • I think Bill Clinton was a better speaker, had better retorts, and wouldn't collapse under pressure like Obama's Bristol VA speech. And him equating his bowling skills to that of a special olympian doesn't help his "elegance."

  • Well, Bill cheated on his wife and then Lied about it, so.......

  • True...Bill also signed into law the welfare reform act which was just reversed by Obama.

  • Precisely...and you also have to remember that the welfare reform act was written by a Republican Congress. So Bill only gets credit for signing it, and that's about it.

Like I said in a previous video, Dyson is a bombastic circular talker. Being able to use 15 letter words, doesn't equate to a superior intellect or critical thinking skills. I prefer to hear speakers who are cogent and pithy, as opposed to those dancing around the English language unnecessarily, without ever making a point.

  • Dr. Dyson always sounds strange when he speaks. I suspect he likes to hear himself talk. He sounds bombastic...always uses a bunch of fancy words and thinks he sounds so smart. Don't get me wrong, he is a smart guy, but he always comes across as trying to impress the audience with his vocabulary. He strikes me as very full of himself. Anyone else feel that way? Not that I disagree with what he is saying...just my impression.

  • there is a hater in the building... this goes back to what eric was saying about critics of black people's oratorical skills. when you sound smart, it's a problem because you sound too smart. when you sound too uneducated, then it's another problem.

  • I suspect you often go around accusing people you don't know, who hold conflicting opinions than yours, of being haters. It is unfortunate that we can't have a dialogue without such baseless slander. You are incapable of supporting your position with reason and logic so you call me a hater. It is not racist to suggest that Dr. Dyson comes off as having a large ego. Nor is it racist for me to say that you are ignorant...which you are.

  • To Zuckdawg,

I understand where you are coming from. Somes times it sounds like hes rapping.

HOWEVER, if more black males took his approach when it came down to speech and education I could "deal" with the narcissistic persona.

  • Brightlights: I agree with you 100%.

  • Zuckdawg,

I've learned from experience that once one attains a level of mastery in a certain area, people tend to perceive an aura of overconfidence glowing around that person. I just want you to ask yourself: "Why do I think Dyson comes off as having a large ego?" If your answer is "because he uses a lot of big words," then your opinion on Dyson is of little significance.

  • Blackadan000...not sure how you justify that your opinion has any more significance than mine. This is youtube, people are entitled to share their thoughts. You may disagree with me, that is fine, but you sound sorta silly and pompous...kinda like Prof. Dyson. haha

  • It's funny you should address my "opinion," as I haven't expressed one. I agree that you are entitled to share your thoughts; I was merely suggesting that you shouldn't be too quick to judge someone.

  • This is a rather useless conversation...but you did express an opinion when you told me that my opinion is of little significance.

  • Actually, I never made a definitive statement on your opinion; I only raised a hypothetical instance...hence the term "if."

  • haha...OK. Glad we cleared that up. cheers.

  • lol cheers. ahhh, now i can stop trying to sound intelligent....I know this is not the time or place, but may i ask your assistance in spreading my "secret tutorial..." video on youtube? check it out, it might be of interest to you or someone you know. thanks for the intelligent conversation and for not being immature

  • so true.I wish I could put that on a bumper sticker without lookin nerdy.ppl say I "sound white" but oh if Isa cama talkings likes this den they would feel rights at home.yes sir

  • I disagree. As a debator, I use oratorical skills to convince my judges of things I completely hate. They think I believe in what I'm saying. I don't.

Words are powerful. Don't believe a man completely just because he has a flow.

Hitler made great speeches too. What helped him along?

    Flattery of the German people.

    Be wary.

  • Well, that's great...however, the real point of debating is to convince them that your argument is logical and cogent...Whether you believe it or not is irrelevant to the argument.

And invoking Godwin's Law is now considered an argument killer, FYI...

  • Oh, that explains why I've won championships with it. "Is now considered"? Who decided? You?

People are believing empty words. It's not exactly wonderful for democracy.

  • If you win by being glib and empty, that says something about the quality of the competitions you enter...it's like saying Big Macs are haute cuisine b/c they sell so well.

And, you might want toask your coaches about having to resort to comparisons to Hitler; around here it's a signal you ran out of ideas and went for the cheap shot.

  • I agree with him on President Barack Obama mastering style with substance and using his great oratory skills to communicate.

America needed to show and prove great orators such as President Obama. The times are demanding it. Too many wonderful orators, i.e. Dr. Michel Eric Dyson, Morgan Freeman, etc. are the personification of elegance and intelligence when they do speak to issues.

  • I've seen this guy lots of times before. He makes good points, but he speaks soooooo fast

  • is he speaking fast or are you thnking slow?

  • "or are you thnking slow?"

    LMFAO

  • thanks

  • obama is dam near as good as mlk on the speech game!

  • Does he plagiarise HIS speedches as well? MLK did...

  • Dyson, you are a most impressive orator. You are also an outstanding writer. Please read

Eugene Williams' Why Bill Cosby Was Right.

    Great book!

  • Dyson has a style that sets him apart. I didn't feel it the first time I heard him ... I thought he was being too wordy, too. But, I began to realize he creates his own flow. And if you go with him ... you learn something.

    Open your minds.

  • Its hard to listen to Dyson, even when I agree with him (as I do here) because he uses far too many words and misuses an astonishing number of them. And all at a dizzying pace. Compare Dyson's prolix mode of expression with the measured, metered expression of Obama.

  • Which words does he "misuse"[sic]?

  • What do you mean, "[sic]"? That's properly spelled and properly used.

  • I was brought up using a hyphen: ie "mis-use"

Apparently there are alternate ways of spelling it, so my bad...

Anyway, ets still hasn't answered the question as to which words Dyson misuses...

  • Dr. Dyson talks "PRISON TALK"... Please go somewhere and sit down and shut up PLEASE!!!

  • LMAO

  • Eric Dyson always keeps it honest.

  • there's only 1 Eric Dyson

  • Well said Dr.Dyson.

    Talk about intelligent!

  • I've been a fan of Michael Eric Dyson for a couple of years now, he's always spoke this way as long as I can remember. I hope to speak this well one day.

  • I was always told if you go into anything take God with you; my lord and savior is Jesus Christ, He may not exist in your relgion, but I never judge. I Love all, peace..

  • i think Obama just has a heart thats the only difference, he gives his speeches with a heart

  • Dr. Dyson has a way of getting right to the point. He has a gift of interpretation. I am always enlightened when he speaks

  • the same boat as Obama??? wtf?!

    Not EVEN

Furthermore, dyson apparently sounds good TO YOU, and therefore perhaps deception sounds good TO YOU.

As I relatively ask of dyson, please refrain from ATTEMPTS to speak for intelligent people, gilbert.

  • they both are great speakers... Dyson is not deceptive.... DYSON IS GREAT AND SO IS OBAMA... why can't they both be good?

  • "he needs to learn to talk to people and not talk above people -"

What is talking above the people? Also what is talking fake?

  • So do common people talk the way he does?

  • define "common person" and whether or not you would like them to run your country...

not disagreeing, you actually have a valid point

I'm skeptical of your argument simply because Dyson outlines it as common criticism of Obama's speech.

  • What's up with this new phony baisden-esque media tone he's adopted??

I've always been led to believe he was credible...and when I saw him on TVone's DNC coverage-- (rolls eyes).

Is he hopped up on something these days?? Geesh *shutting my ears tight as I turn down the volume until the video is over*
