Excuse the ignorance but, unbelievably, I have never heard this before. Thought it was a WASP song, now I realise theirs was a bloody cover!! Ordinarily I despise covers, but I suppose where I was already so familiar with the WASP cover I feel like giving them the benefit of the doubt. This original is an absolute belter though isn't it! To complete my shame, I haven't seen Quadrophenia either - might get hold of it now...

I love the story (true or not) that Entwistle played the bass line as a joke the first time through. He was really taking the piss. The rest of the band wound up liking it, which he apparently thought was a bit of a laugh. Whatever the case, it wound up sounding alright.

John went back and remixed Quadrophenia for a re-release and while he was at it he re-did a lot of what he played on the original. Daltrey was less than pleased and I have to agree with his assessment. John's playing was almost always brilliant but it seems a bit distracting here. Compare to the first release:

@pfhorny69 John Entwhistle is my all-time favorite bassist. He's done spectacular work over many many years. But greatest bassline in rock? I think that distinction has to go to John Paul Jones and his ENTIRELY improv work on The Lemon Song. The way JPJ weaves his bass around Jimmy Page's solo is beyond reproach. And just like this classic Who song the Bass is often the only melody you hear.
