  • Excuse the ignorance but, unbelievably, I have never heard this before. Thought it was a WASP song, now I realise theirs was a bloody cover!! Ordinarily I despise covers, but I suppose where I was already so familiar with the WASP cover I feel like giving them the benefit of the doubt. This original is an absolute belter though isn't it! To complete my shame, I haven't seen Quadrophenia either - might get hold of it now...

  • @vonteflon: All relative, ain't it? Glad you found your way back to the creators. Now check out the original recording:

    youtube.com/watch?v=UoRb8hxwluE

For reasons beyond my comprehension John, the bass player, re-recorded his part in this version. I prefer the one in the link.

And by all means, check out the film. One of the best on the Mods. And watch for the Ace Face played by a young bloke named Sting in his first film appearance.

  • ROCK GODS ALL!!!!

  • Keith Moon was a drum God.....

  • @MyAllanlee - Indeed. This is one of a handful of songs that you simply cannot play LOUD enough.

  • Men, John Entwistle was from another dimesion...

  • @12SeanH A friend of mine in college had a VCR porno called "Kenya Fuck?" It was nigger porn. And I laughed and laughed!

  • 80.000 views. 0 FUCKING DISLIKES. amazing.

  • @ffdeke How in sweet hell could anyone dislike this.. that button should be removed form this song. Will never be used.

  • @ffdeke i disliked just to piss you off LOL

  • My neighbors tell me I play this song W*A*Y too loud , funny , I did not think it was L*O*U*D enough.

  • i remember being a teenager with a really fucking loud sound system and the first time I heard this song out of 4 speakers....mind blowing experience.....

  • this song is crazy lol!! love it

  • This is my new favorite song!!

  • Why you no gets louder???? More volume please, I've got some speakers here I would prefer to blow out.

  • THIS.IS.MUSIC.

  • Not a single dislike. As it should be, what a great song.

  • this band is a direct spawn of Jesus

  • ohhh doctahhh

  • I love the story (true or not) that Entwistle played the bass line as a joke the first time through. He was really taking the piss. The rest of the band wound up liking it, which he apparently thought was a bit of a laugh. Whatever the case, it wound up sounding alright.

  • Among my favorite Who songs. Entwistle's bass never sounded so good or stood out so prominently. And Roger Daltrey's vocals sound especially strong. This track stands out among The Who's most powerful songs.

  • loudness is key.

  • Classic rock peaked at this song (2:15-3:33 to be exact) and then classic rock waned slowly - it never got better than this. never.

  • The Who was Jim Morrison's fav uk band.

  • @futurecat71 really? where did u read that ?

  • @TheOzzyMania a friend in the know told me!

  • The Ox rules this song.

  • One of the best songs of The Who. If not the best!

  • Entwhistle's motherfucking Opus, turn up the bass!

  • One thing I really want to do is remake Quadrophenia.

  • Fucking great song! Great band, great bass, great drumming, great EVERYTHING!!!

  • I used to ride an old 1966 150 lambretta... so...Imagine Ö.Ö

  • Keith Moon is relentless.

  • Is this a soundboard recording? The bass line is distinctly different in areas than in the studio recordings I've heard.

  • @BassManGilbert There are two studio versions of The Real Me with different bass parts

  • @AttitudeCastle Interesting. How were they released? Was one a single and the other an album cut? Or was one version simply a b-side?

  • @BassManGilbert One was on an album and one was re-recorded for the Quadrophenia sound track :) (with a different bass part )

  • @AttitudeCastle Awesome! Thanks for the info!

  • Hi all W.A.S.P. fans WHO got this far

  • @TheAlmightyBrody: wish I still had my old 150 Sprint

  • THUNDERFINGERSSS!!!!

  • @juan13579run THUNDERSTIX!!!

  • I went back to the doctor to get another drink I set and tell him bout my weekend, but he never could change what me thinks. The cracks between the pavement stones like rivers of flowing veins, strange people who know me, peep from behind every window pane, The girl I used to love, lives in this yellow house, yesterday she passed me by, she doesn't wanna know me now.

  • Any drummer knows how fun it is to play this song.

  • The bass is too awesome=]

  • don't forget roger!

  • while we're at it, YEAH PETE!

  • This is not the original version from Quadrophenia (1973). This may be from the film soundtrack of Quadrophenia (1979), but is far inferior to the original version.

  • @dbeatlefreak The bass line is different, but that's it.

  • OMG that bass!

  • they say john did his part in 1 take

  • John OWNS that BASS

  • OMG!!!

  • What can you say?! One of their best.!

  • ...more like, what ever happened to real music.

    You have to love it.

  • Holy shit, that's some serious drumming

  • @TheGrownUpAdult Faster than a machine gun according to Pete.

  • @MusicIsDeadToday I've had that happen, too. For real.

  • john is all "do do do do dod odododo dodod" on that bass. abt7217tc likes it!

  • Best version of this song. The second one has a bass line that is more prevalent, but this version is the best. ......IMO.

  • @rrhynes One of the best and amazing intro of bass in pop music.!!!

John rules the world of bass.

    RIP John.

  • @MrStrat01 No doubt. This is certainly a tour de force of bass and drums.

  • sounds like the seeker

  • This kind of tihng simply does't exist anymore.

This bottom line (bass & drums) is outstanding!!!

  • Keith Moon Your An Absolute Legend ..... :)

  • That song is Entwistles. It shows why he was one of the best bassists ever. Combine that with Pete's emotional and powerful writing and you have something that just reaches into your core and makes you want to go out and just absolutely kick ass.

  • 0 dislikes. No surpise there.

  • The story of my life! ;7 This song is an example of why The Who are my favorite band..

  • rocks

  • Look, the Beatles and the Stones were okay and had some good songs BUT THE WHO had a different connection to something a bit beyond in our conscience. You Who fans know what i'm talking about. But for the rest of ya, when you hear that redundant question about "The Beatles or The Stones?," just answer THE WHO!!!!!!!! No apologies!!!!!

  • Holy s*** Keith Moon....

  • @Yasterven My exact words!!

  • the band at their best!

  • can ya!

  • John went back and remixed Quadrophenia for a re-release and while he was at it he re-did a lot of what he played on the original. Daltrey was less than pleased and I have to agree with his assessment. John's playing was almost always brilliant but it seems a bit distracting here. Compare to the first release:

    youtube.com/watch?v=UoRb8hxwluE

  • @YouzTube99 he didnt re-do what he played, it was just remastered, also remember the soundtrack version is a tottally differant version to the album version

  • Enthwistle is tearing up that bass!

  • @jamarco31 um, as always

  • @jamarco31

Entwistle and I agreed on two things: playing bass, and this being his best bass work on Who recordings.

  • Pete Townshend's riff at 2:15 is pure and unadulterated ROCK & ROLL!!!

  • Bass! *¬*

  • sad that there are only 5 comments on the greatest bassline in rock and roll.

  • @pfhorny69 John Entwhistle is my all-time favorite bassist. He's done spectacular work over many many years. But greatest bassline in rock? I think that distinction has to go to John Paul Jones and his ENTIRELY improv work on The Lemon Song. The way JPJ weaves his bass around Jimmy Page's solo is beyond reproach. And just like this classic Who song the Bass is often the only melody you hear.

  • I said I'm crazy Mom help me

she said I know who it feels son

cause it runs in the family! NO SHIT!

  • Awesome..The Who!! The only band were everybody plays lead front seat! Saw them live with Moonie........best concert EVER!

  • epic beginning
