@use2slam2: It has to be George and Louis Johnson because that's who they started with before hooking up with Quincy Jones, backing him up. Hence the A&M Records hookup (Billy and Q).
I'll take Billy Preston on a B3 any day. My favorite group was Billy with the Brothers Johnson on lead and bass, and Manuel Kellog on drums. FUNK, FUNK, FUNK to the highest power!!!!
The thing I love about Billy is that he had his own sound. Where it's easy to confuse a Smith with a McGriff, and a DeFrancesco, it's not hard to tell Billys sound from anyone else, a true one off.
@clavdig I know what you mean about Billy and I agree with that. BUt honestly, Jimmy has his own unique style and I never confused him with anyone... that may be because I had his music played to me since I was a little baby in 1963.
Juiceman-- thank you for correction. I was trying to say this was the ULTIMATE performance of this song and a monument of funk.
I've heard the word 'penultimate' misused a few times it seems and just went with it... kind of like hearing people say 'down' when they mean 'north', and I'm trying hard not to catch that habit.
This is what you get when you combine gospel and funk...... Billy was from the church and it shows. This is one baddass clip. I wish I could find this on DVD!
Oh, and according to the label, it's "Outa Space". I would hate to think that racism was and is so terrible that we as a people would have to get "outta" space, too!
they still do , but there has to be a form of refocus with the youth appreciating this kind of music . also record companies are more willing to sign white artists like robin thicke , justin timberlake , maroon 5 to do this music , it's elvis presley all over again .
I will happily point you to Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings.
At certain points of this song, you can see Preston slapping the keyboard and he STILL can wrest more music out of a Hammond organ than many could. 59 was too soon for this musical genius.
George & Louis Played with Preston before they went on to there Get The Funk Outma Face days, if i'm not mistaken that's how Quincy Jones found out about them.
Also on keyboard is Robert Sam (Graham Central Station) and Manuel Kellough (Graham Central Station) and in the early 90's did you know that George J played with Graham Central Station? Serious musicians, just plain funky.
Wow friggin great!!!!! Seen it atleast 20 or 30 times just doesn't wear out. Just curious what year tv show and what year did they perform this song in? Plus what are those band names that appear w/ the numbers?
Yapp, brilliant stuff! It's from the german 70s tv show "Musikladen" epsiode 8 originally aired on october 31 1973. Those bandnames appearing are the results of an "oldie vote", which meant tracks from the late 60s show "Beat Club". Just take a look at wikipedia.
meanmotor74,the show was musikladen also known as beat club which was on for over 500 episodes from 1964-79,1982-87. this was the 300th episode from 1974 it aired just a week from thanksgiving
Let me try to say this the best way I can: This video shows a group of me that played musice because they love music. Not for a record contract. Not for the money. Simply, because they just wanted to get out there and jam. You can tell it in every phase of this video. God rest your soul Billy!
What happened to music in the last 20 years??? The amateur spirit of making music for the sake of music making is gone - the "soul" squeezed out and replaced by
robotic tripe produced by market formula driven faux musician types.
I always loved this song. It is kind of a gift to the listener. If you want a suggestion, head to Funkadelic's Maggot Brain. If this is a bomb, that is a super-nova.
I've heard people use the phrase "funk bomb". This would be quite possibly the most massive, solid, heavy, Mother of All Atomic Funk Bombs with a 300 megaton warhead on it.
you see those big fros, the music will be blistering!!! All the black music from the late 60s/early 70s was unbelievably awesome. Look for the giant fro. They'll never disappoint!
Billy was from the old school, he learned music as a child, and developed his skills through the years. Nowadays, all ya need is a computer and software. It's disgusting.
one band that is pretty hot these days is Fishbone. They are an all black band playing ska, jazz, metal, rock, fund, and just about whatever they can coax their musical genious into. Angelo Moore as charisma and talent(lead singer and sax). He interacts with the audience. But sadly most of the new music is like processed food. No nutrition for the brain and really nothing to study or groove too. The best bands today don't get recognition.
How is it possible that as kids 30 years ago we dug the shit out of this and kids today can't listen to it. Are we smart and our kids dumb when it comes to musc and movies?
These days kids are manipulated by the industry to look at how good looking the artists are. It makes my stomach turn to see people like Simon Cowell churning out so much shit.
Hey Tamapalagi, Like you, I grew up in the 70's, and people of our age group are gonna say that our stuff is superior. Our kids have fallen victim to PEER PRESSURE, they're too scared to admit they like/listen to our stuff.Whenever my son got excited about some piss-poor cover of a song he heard on the radio, i would go and play the original, he soon got the message. Yeah I can see where your coming from. Maybe Sam would be a good person to do Billy Prestons life story for a film, well for the later years, not sure who would be good for his young man days
I thought this was done on a Clavinet with a Cry Baby wah pedal,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,? Fun to see him do it on a different keyboard! Rest in peace!
i think you're right , when he did his thing he made that keyboard talk to your soul . i remeber seeing him do the song on the midnight special when i was a little kid . it has that funk machine gun had by the commodores .

thomas: why dont african americans make music like this anymore? it has talent and theyre not just in it for the money
JL: The music companies, which are white-owned, aren't buying the music. Instead, they're focused on rap and hiphop.
Even Earth, Wind, & Fire couldn't get a deal.
