  • My fave instrumental of all time!!!

  • who was the drummer?

  • He dMan

  • 2:13 of the greasiest, stankiest, jamminest FUNK ever!!

  • funking Awesomee

  • @use2slam2: It has to be George and Louis Johnson because that's who they started with before hooking up with Quincy Jones, backing him up. Hence the A&M Records hookup (Billy and Q).

  • I wore this 45 out -- and my brother finished the job... couldn't play it anymore!

  • Billy Rocks! and Funks!! period.

  • God f*cking dammit! WOW! That's my review.

  • my all time favorite- Billy Preston's Outa-Space. I think I wore out two 45's and an album.

  • thats gotta be one of the brothers johnson playin that left handed guitar!!!

  • I have this 45

  • Haha, I remember listening to this song on am radio, lol.

  • their hair! look at their hair!!!

  • now that's funk

  • I'll take Billy Preston on a B3 any day. My favorite group was Billy with the Brothers Johnson on lead and bass, and Manuel Kellog on drums. FUNK, FUNK, FUNK to the highest power!!!!

  • Can't believe I just heard this for the first time 2 days ago. Can't get enough.

  • back in '72 this record was hot, same year Superstitution came out

  • thats right!! I had this 8 track RIP!!

  • MR. ACID ROCK HIMSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can even count the hrs. i've party hard to this song.

    Thanks Billy Rip.

    PEACE.

  • oh, that drummin' is tight during the break!

  • there is a clip on here somewhere of billy preston at 11 yrs old, i think, singing performing with the great nat king cole

  • Great musician,great songwriter.Funk me,baby.

  • What was so scary about Billy is he played like that when he was five years old. He was truly a gifted musician.

  • @dimpledick3inch

    No doubt about it!

    Sure kicked my ass!

  • Yeah , this is INCREDIBLE!!!!

I had the single when I was a kid , later tried to find original vinyl - no way!

He was such an eclectic artist and so innovative ,always had the best musicians to work with!

  • afros & bellbottoms!!

  • Funk Me Up!!!!!!!

  • The thing I love about Billy is that he had his own sound. Where it's easy to confuse a Smith with a McGriff, and a DeFrancesco, it's not hard to tell Billys sound from anyone else, a true one off.

  • @clavdig I know what you mean about Billy and I agree with that. BUt honestly, Jimmy has his own unique style and I never confused him with anyone... that may be because I had his music played to me since I was a little baby in 1963.

  • And we have Cleveland from the Cleveland Show at the drums!

  • DAMN.gonna listen to this all night.there was only 1 BP.THANX

  • love it!

  • I believe the other guy on keys is Robert Sam who later played Organ for Graham Central Station.

  • i got this in 1972,billy is the boss,i got to know him on the stones tours,what a guy...the best,sadly missed,never forgotten

  • Juiceman-- thank you for correction. I was trying to say this was the ULTIMATE performance of this song and a monument of funk.

I've heard the word 'penultimate' misused a few times it seems and just went with it... kind of like hearing people say 'down' when they mean 'north', and I'm trying hard not to catch that habit.

  • Comment removed

  • you realize that the defiunition of PENULTIMATE is "

  • i want all those keyboards in my band

  • Billy Preston ROCKS !!!!!!!

  • PARTY TIME 1972 AT THE GAS STATION ON MELROSE AND GOWER!!!

YEP I WAS THERE... AND I NEVER GOT BETTER YET. LOL I'll be alrite after a while.

    peace.

  • This is what you get when you combine gospel and funk...... Billy was from the church and it shows. This is one baddass clip. I wish I could find this on DVD!

  • Yeah, but Ray Charles perfected it years earlier.

  • billy and the stones,hey,magic.

  • if you look closely at the guitar player and the bass player , that's louis and george ,

who will later be known as the BROTHER'S JOHNSON WOW!!!

  • WOW!

  • I don't think I have ever seen someone having more fun playing there own music. Billy was LOVIN' IT!!!

    ME TOO!!!

    PEACE

  • Oh, and according to the label, it's "Outa Space". I would hate to think that racism was and is so terrible that we as a people would have to get "outta" space, too!

  • why dont african americans make music like this anymore? it has talent and theyre not just in it for the money

  • thomas: why dont african americans make music like this anymore? it has talent and theyre not just in it for the money

JL: The music companies, which are white-owned, aren't buying the music. Instead, they're focused on rap and hiphop.

Even Earth, Wind, & Fire couldn't get a deal.

  • they still do , but there has to be a form of refocus with the youth appreciating this kind of music . also record companies are more willing to sign white artists like robin thicke , justin timberlake , maroon 5 to do this music , it's elvis presley all over again .

  • I will happily point you to Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings.

At certain points of this song, you can see Preston slapping the keyboard and he STILL can wrest more music out of a Hammond organ than many could. 59 was too soon for this musical genius.

  • I'm not sure we'll ever hear someone make a Hammond scream like that ever again. Tone wheel generators throwing sparks after that.

    Amazing talent!

  • Haha pretty sure

  • Great video.

  • George & Louis Played with Preston before they went on to there Get The Funk Outma Face days, if i'm not mistaken that's how Quincy Jones found out about them.

  • 5th Beatle...

    what can I say more?

GOD of keyboards and the greatest keyboard-man of the greatest band ever!!!

    R.I.P Billy

  • smooooooooooooooooth

  • Is that George Johnson from the Brothers Johnson on Guitar?

  • Yes, That is George Johnson, his brother Louis

    played in the band also.

  • Manuel Kellough on drums, they really had a great band, all of them very talented.

  • Shortly there after Manny went to Graham Central Station for a year or so.

  • Good I was gonna ask the same Question.

  • Also on keyboard is Robert Sam (Graham Central Station) and Manuel Kellough (Graham Central Station) and in the early 90's did you know that George J played with Graham Central Station? Serious musicians, just plain funky.

  • Wow friggin great!!!!! Seen it atleast 20 or 30 times just doesn't wear out. Just curious what year tv show and what year did they perform this song in? Plus what are those band names that appear w/ the numbers?

P.S Your right the clavinet is frackin amazin!!

  • Yapp, brilliant stuff! It's from the german 70s tv show "Musikladen" epsiode 8 originally aired on october 31 1973. Those bandnames appearing are the results of an "oldie vote", which meant tracks from the late 60s show "Beat Club". Just take a look at wikipedia.

  • Thank you so much! I scratch my head less and enjoy more! :-)

  • meanmotor74,the show was musikladen also known as beat club which was on for over 500 episodes from 1964-79,1982-87. this was the 300th episode from 1974 it aired just a week from thanksgiving

  • Those guys unleashed a thouroughbred of pure groove and joy from outtaspace ! What a ride !

Makes evreybody else sound like snails.

Thanks Clavdig, this is, to my taste, the thightest and best version of this piece of raw enrgy ( even though I wish it went for longer )

  • Cool, do you like the organ version over the clavinet? I think I do for it's raw energy pulsating from everyone!

  • Great music!!

This man was a legend! Brilliant!

    R.I.P. Billy Preston.

  • Let me try to say this the best way I can: This video shows a group of me that played musice because they love music. Not for a record contract. Not for the money. Simply, because they just wanted to get out there and jam. You can tell it in every phase of this video. God rest your soul Billy!

  • What happened to music in the last 20 years??? The amateur spirit of making music for the sake of music making is gone - the "soul" squeezed out and replaced by

robotic tripe produced by market formula driven faux musician types.

  • GODDAMN!!! THIS IS AWESOME!

  • this b one bad mf'in jam

  • I always loved this song. It is kind of a gift to the listener. If you want a suggestion, head to Funkadelic's Maggot Brain. If this is a bomb, that is a super-nova.

  • That was so good I'm sweatin' just watchin' it. WHAT happened to black music in the last 20 years? And hair, the hair is great!

  • I've heard people use the phrase "funk bomb". This would be quite possibly the most massive, solid, heavy, Mother of All Atomic Funk Bombs with a 300 megaton warhead on it.

  • Lol, they don't come much bigger than your bomb comparisons, that would truly have to be the biggest Funk Bomb known to man!

  • this is, what I call 70s! RIP Billy

  • I LOVE THIS GUY! hes amazing

  • wow this is the definition of funk

  • unbelievable!!! Check out the drummer,is this guy cool or what!!!Music of today cannot compare to these guys.

  • BILLY PRESTON IS GOD!!!!!!!

  • Jesus is God. However Billy is teriffic on the organ

  • Funktastic

  • THIS BRO IS UNDER APPRECIATED! he can never be topped in my book. with his talent his name should have been way bigger than it is now.

  • I was just watching some Herbie Hancock and had to come to the Billy Preston Electric Church Revival.

  • The Funk Church is always open, drop by anytime!

  • That's George Johnson Oth e Brothers Johnson on Guitar!!

  • you see those big fros, the music will be blistering!!! All the black music from the late 60s/early 70s was unbelievably awesome. Look for the giant fro. They'll never disappoint!

  • I love this clip. Those brothas went to church on ya!

  • Billy was from the old school, he learned music as a child, and developed his skills through the years. Nowadays, all ya need is a computer and software. It's disgusting.

  • fuckin amen

  • Geniuses.

  • Man, Billy went off on that version.

  • one band that is pretty hot these days is Fishbone. They are an all black band playing ska, jazz, metal, rock, fund, and just about whatever they can coax their musical genious into. Angelo Moore as charisma and talent(lead singer and sax). He interacts with the audience. But sadly most of the new music is like processed food. No nutrition for the brain and really nothing to study or groove too. The best bands today don't get recognition.

  • love the f@@kin Cow Bell!!!!!!!!......,!!!!

  • What better example do we need to exemplify that music today......., SUCKS!!!

  • 5th Beatle... Need I say more.

  • 5th beatle? actually, i thought of him more as the 5th stone.

  • How is it possible that as kids 30 years ago we dug the shit out of this and kids today can't listen to it. Are we smart and our kids dumb when it comes to musc and movies?

  • These days kids are manipulated by the industry to look at how good looking the artists are. It makes my stomach turn to see people like Simon Cowell churning out so much shit.

  • Hey! I'm 18 and I'm drooling at these videos all day long! Hallelluja! :D

  • I'm tellin' ya... We need to play these kind of stuff more at schools!

  • Hey Tamapalagi, Like you, I grew up in the 70's, and people of our age group are gonna say that our stuff is superior. Our kids have fallen victim to PEER PRESSURE, they're too scared to admit they like/listen to our stuff.Whenever my son got excited about some piss-poor cover of a song he heard on the radio, i would go and play the original, he soon got the message. Also if you listen to the key music parts of rap songs, usually it turns to be a sample of a song from OUR era. Think about it.

  • im 16 and i love the music that ur generation made...the best we got now is 50 cent and in my eyes thats not even music

  • billy preston is indeed a fine talent!

  • Unf@@@@king real!

  • I really wish SOMEONE would relese this version on CD.

  • That's the very definition of funk and soul right there! HOLY SHIT!

  • this brought back some good old childhood memories my first am/fm radio thank you so much!!!!!

  • my favorite organaut,

    bless his soul

  • My pleasure!

  • If this is not GROOVY then the word has no meaning.

    Wow!

  • Up tight and outa sight!

  • Oh my gosh! Haven't heard this in awhile! LOVE IT!!

  • Is that one of the brother Johson in the background on guitar?Great video

  • Yes, that is both of the Johnson Brothers and the great Manny Kellough on drums.

  • red top rhodes? i thought they made only black and silver ones (silver = the celestes)

  • it flah me in a deep narcotic, - awesome tune

    rest in peace, brother !

    respect

  • Oh yeah! You go Billy! It's too bad he died though. But this video rules, it's so groovy!

  • YEAHHHHHHHH! Great video!

  • Can you dig it!

  • Where's the d6?

  • That's The Brothers Johnson in this band. Van Cephus. vancephus(dot)com

  • That is George Johnson on guitar. There is another vid on YouTube of "Nothing From Nothing" and he has Tony Maiden (Rufus) on guitar. Brilliant!!!

  • Im just busy tightening up a version of this with the band im in, ill post it and you can throw some comments. Im a white guy tho, so be warned, black guys look far funkier on hammonds!

  • Samuel L. Jackson on the Hammond B-3. LOL

    Peace, Bear

  • Yeah I can see where your coming from. Maybe Sam would be a good person to do Billy Prestons life story for a film, well for the later years, not sure who would be good for his young man days

  • Kel Mitchell could do it. Look him up at IMDB if you don't know him.

  • I thought this was done on a Clavinet with a Cry Baby wah pedal,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,? Fun to see him do it on a different keyboard! Rest in peace!

  • I actually prefer the riff done on organ don't you?

  • I always thought Billy was excellent no matter what he played. It always turned out killer.

I guess I'm so accustomed to the original version. It's the one I grew up listening to.

I agree, Samuel would probably do great as Billy. Who'd play the younger, 70's Billy, tho?hmmmmmm Rock On!

  • i think you're right , when he did his thing he made that keyboard talk to your soul . i remeber seeing him do the song on the midnight special when i was a little kid . it has that funk machine gun had by the commodores .

  • Billy had so much soul in him and threw down some of the baddest funk and greatest grooves. The man could do NO wrong! I sure do miss him and I sure do miss Midnight Special and the other shows of it's kind that no longer bring LIVE music like those shows did. It's a real shame,,,,,,,,Rock on!

  • As funky as his fro... stinky an swampy an thik

  • He ripped up the Hammond, damn shame he's gone.

  • Oh yeah.... I agree with chiknfulio

  • why thank you very much

  • Hell ya!!!!!!!!!!

  • When I see this video, I get hyped up. Makes you want to go to church.

  • That's what Jimi Hendrix called the "Electric Church"

  • Word!
