This was before CDs when albums needed to be shorter. There were three songs from the "Invisible Touch" sessions that didn't make the album: "Do The Neurotic," "Feeding The Fire," and "I'd Rather Be You." All three are excellent and would have made the cut in the CD era. Also, they were shooting for a pop album. This and "Feeding" are more prog than pop. "I'd Rather Be You" is more of a Collins type of pop number.
It was recorded during the "Invisible Touch" recording sessions. That's the album that it was left off of. Personally, I favor this song over "The Brazilian".
Many people say that Genesis "most popish period" was IT era, but this superb intrumental has nothing to do with pop, IMHO. Shame they didn't include it on the album... I adore Mike's guitar solos in this song
The only reason it's not on the album is because they thought The Brazilian sounded more quirky and funky, plus they didn't want to have two instrumental songs on the album. Shame really would have made a brilliant album closer.
I can't believe they didn't include this on Invisible Touch. It would have been the second best song (behind Domino) on the entire album. This song is about as brilliant an instrumental as I have heard.
First time I heard this I could not believe the brilliance and energy. It is superb! This is a different version to the which plays to the credits at the end of video collection I have but just as good.
Ist time I've ever hear this. In comparison with the Brazillian - comes a strong 2nd for me. N doesn't have the 'hook' that B has. The repeated chorus in B, particularly live, with the moving vari-lights, grabs me more tha N. Enjoyed N, though.
I saw them in concert in September and wanted to make a t-shirt that said "Do the Neurotic" on it and wear it there, but was afraid the merchandising people there would attack me.
Great song. I wish they had played it at the concert, and I like the images that you selected for this song.
As I listen, I can almost see a picture of the three of them in the farm, jamming away with huge grins on their faces, having fun.

@zalapski It does sound like an optimistic jam session, doesn't it? This is how I picture them, just playing this song forever.....

This should have been on IT rather than The Brazilian, IMO.

Me too.

They ought to release a double CD album: "Genesis: Unheard" - Disc 1 would be the instrumentals, and Disc 2 would be the B-Side songs.

It could have been on IT album. The album could have used a couple extra songs. Only 8 songs on the album

Yes - it's probably the shortest album in their discography :)
SPeacock 3 years ago
I think their shortest album would be Trespass.
SunfireRanger 3 years ago
How long does Trespass last?
SPeacock 3 years ago
At iTunes, it says 42.8 minutes. There are 6 tracks total on that album.
SunfireRanger 3 years ago
My God, that is short.
SPeacock 3 years ago
Actually, "Nursery Cryme" is shorter at 39:29.

It is? Oh, I had no idea. It's been quite a long time since I've listened to that album. Thank you for clearing that up.

Such a pity that they never played that song live. Would have been a great drum duet!

Its so good that Tony Banks probably wrote the most of this!

To MJGWriter...make the T-shirt. What a cool song. I was actually expecting something closer to the Brazilian and it totally threw me for a loop.
