what espn classics of BYU having shoot outs with big schools in the 80s and 90s.thier wrs burning cbs that were drafted #! in the nfl.thier qbs went but not wrs,why?I played college football and saw the racism.we had a guy that would get 6 or 7 tds against first team defense but never in game where we would watch guys drop passes that were suppose to be better than him.coaches tell freshmen white rbs to play lb or put head down amd run forward not try and look to holes,etc.

this stuff starts at college level Blake smolen dispite his breakaway speed and size and greatness at his michigan high school,no division 1 school offered him a scholarship.he now joins brian westbrook,mewelde moore,darrin nelson and lindy Crea(you have not heard of him cause he was ignored by the NFL draft dispite 4.4 speed(westbrook ran 4.57)and of course,he is white) passing the 2000 yard mark.will be drafted?

luke staley won the doak award and got drafted in the 4th round,got very little chance and was cut after being hurt blocking.racism should be addressed everywhere.are you saying that not one white person can be a nfl cornerback?I also meant that black qbs in the 70s could not beat out there counterparts terry bradshaw,roman gabrial not that they could not perform.today olsen would be called "hardworker,"slow"

I never say the 'fearsome foursome' but My Dad might agree with you. Pops says the '85 Bears was slightly overrated and says the "70's Steel Curtain and the late 60's Fearsome Foursome was best defenses he ever seen.

In my lifetime the three best defense i seen so far in NFL has been the '85 Bears, '86 Giants and the 2000 Ravens.

Still a NFL legend has passed away and I am surprised this has not gotten more media attention. RIP Merlin Olsen.

Finally on the Olsen tribute. It amazing how many great teams were in the NFL/AFL in the late '60's/early '70's. It hard to believe how the Rams featuring Deacon Jones and Merlin Olsen & also the Browns did not at least make the super bowl at least once in that era.

The stupid rule the NFL had at that time that rotated the conference final among the division winners costed teams like the Rams and Browns at least a real chance to win the super bowl.

I never saw Olsen play but i remember him as a TV Commentator and other than John Madden was the best NFL Analyst of his era. He made great analysis of big plays without being flashy.

My Dad who did see him, says Olsen other than Lawerence Taylor, Joe Greene, Dick Bucktus Ray Lewis and Deacon Jones, best defensive ever.

@USAGiant In todays nfl, john riggins would block and get one or two carries a game.welker was not drafted, dispite owning college return records,then cut by the chargers even after he had 100 yd kickoff return .mike hass one the bilitnikoff trophy,the only white reciever to do so,all other going in first rd,he gets drafted in 4th,plays about 10 downs all preseason and is cut,bounced around practice squads ever since,david ball breaks jerry rice records,cant make nfl roster.racism

First of all fair or not racism i agree sadly still exists on our planet and will probably never end. With that said Nametesyalp even if what you saying is true about white stars in recent years getting less attention/'scrwed' in HOF voting, that should have been in another discussion.

This imo should have been a tribute to one of the lengedary player and one of the best NFL broadcasters ever in Mr. Olsen. And I am a Black Man(actually interracial marriage)

(Continue) Also Nametesyalp back in the early days of the NFL you aware Black players were scerwed as well? It was not until the early 1980's that Blacks became accepted as starting QB's. Not to mention the first Afro American Head Coach in Art Shell until 1988.

On Alex Karras imo the only reason he not in the HOF is the gambling charge that he was suspened for in the 1960's. And Ray Guy being a punter is more an issue than his race.

Plus Riggins was i think a 1st ballot HOF pick.

Plus finally Nametesyalp the NFL realizes that minorities combined ie Black/Hispanic/Asian in next 20 years or so will overtake Whites in US population as well. I not a fan of PC but someone that loves sports i think the golden era of the NFL was the '60/70's with so many great players like Olsen.
