  • just getting my head around this tune. got it out off the keith hinchliffe ISLANDS book on amazon. i like your version as well.just a small question, do you know if there is a poem

or lyric that the tune accompanys. as to my mind it feels like there was or had to be .

and you being more the expert and doc, on o'carolan's music you might know if so.

and point me in the right direction. theres something magical about this tune

and its missing its poem.it seems empty without its words..

  • @oldbladderhorn Hi

My version is essentially Keith's - I had lessons with him for a while several years ago. There is a poem and if you contact me direct I will send you a scan: mike at docsworkshop dot co dot uk

  • Another Keith Hinchliffe fan! I think we're about the only two on here who play his arrangments. He's great. Nice performance too, thanks.

  • I had lessons with Keith a few years ago and he has changed my way of playing and arranging. Just watched your version of Carolan's Concerto - standard tuning I assume? I am still trying to get it right in an open tuning. Yours is very smooth playing.

  • Wow, lessons with Keith Hinchliffe, I bet that was insightful. The Carolan's Concerto is in DADGAD, it's Franco Morone's arrangement and can be found very easily online with a simple search. It's a nice one to play.

  • Yes Keith's a good model and teacher. I'd hit a 'plateau' after decades playing and my time with him pushed me on alot. I have arranged ALL Carolan's tunes in tabbed format - did you see any others on You Tube? Have you any other videos?

  • I know what you mean about the plateau. I have a go at lots of different styles to counter-act that. The only videos I have are the ones on here under my username. Three guitar videos, 'Carolan's Concerto', 'Planxty Hewlett' and my own arrangement of 'Pure Imagination'. I hope to upload some more eventually.

  • Oh, I forgot to answer, no I haven't seen anyone else but ourselves on here who are playing his arrangements. I had a look at your site, that's no mean feat to have accomplished. I downloaded the demo but I couldn't access the tab, is that normal?

  • I assume you have TablEdit to show the files in? You should just unzip the zip file and use the tunes inside it through TablEdit (or its free veiwer).

I found your other tunes and subscribed so I'll see the new ones in due course.

  • Ah, thanks, I see what I was doing wrong, I was trying to click the songs on the spreadsheet but I realise now to go into the folder with the songs. Nice arrangements and I like how TablEdit can make midi sound more interesting!

  • Sorry to ask, but just how do you make the program sound more guitar/harplike?

  • Sorry - missed this one last week.

In TablEdit go to Score - Instrument and look at the MIDI drop-down list for Orchestral Harp. Maybe you don't think it's too harp-like?

  • Thanks so much for that, I was trying to figure it out for ages but was in the wrong drop-down list, so you've solved the mystery for me! I think the effect is definitely worth adding, sounds much better than the straight midi. Thanks again.
