It's always interesting to meet a captain of another ship (Jellico, Maxwell, DeSoto, Sanders, Ransom, Decker, Garrett, Hernandez), since they're usually going to have a different style of command than the usual captain. Not necessarily better or worse, just different. From what I've read, that's what the Chain of Command writers were going for with Jellico. He definitely wasn't meant to be a BAD captain, just a different one.
I always thought David Warner's Cardassian was one of the greatest Star Trek villains ever, almost as good as Khan. It's a shame he wasn't brought back, especially for one of the TNG films.
Jellico was such an asshole in this episode. All Riker did was support Picard, but Jellico spit in his face, demoted him to engineering with Geordi, and promoted Data to second-in-command. Why didn't Riker punch Jellico in the face, and, furthermore, why didn't Jellico exhibit more compassion to Picard?
@FutureNewsAnchor Riker was supposed to support JELLICO, not Picard, since Jellico was RIker's commanding officer. Jellico was a bit rougher on the crew than Picard, but that's his right as Captain. Riker wasn't doing his job, so he got reassigned. If he had punched Jellico, he'd have spent the mission in the brig, then likely been discharged from Starfleet. Jellico didn't show more compassion or Picard because he was trying to stop a war, not save one man. Needs of the many.
its funny how in the end picard managed to break his cardassian interrigator.
it was even mentioned in star trek Elite Force game when you sneak behind 2 romulans in their base and hear them talk about how starfleet officers can break their cardassian interrigators because "they belive in federation propoganda about freedom and rights"
Because If he make him say he did see one that wasnt there, It shows he(Gul Mandred) had broken Picard's sprit. Mandred obviously would enjoy that, because he said that in his youth, someone else had beaten him to steal food and broken HIS sprit. Picard said to him "It must be rewarding to you to get payback for that beating..."
Your welcome. I read another interpretation that the fifth light would have been Mandred himself, giving him additional satifaction from images of godhood. This is a really good storyline, since it's so multifaceted and is open to so much interpretation.
He wanted him to say there were more then there really were so he could break him. If he made him see things werent really there then picard would have been broken
@jerryfos785 It's from 1984 by George Orwell, where O'Brian asserts that he is holding up five fingers, when he is in fact only holding up four, because his will is that of the Party, and the Party's will is the determination of Truth.
One of the series' best episodes, HANDS DOWN!

I never quite understoud the "how many lights are there?" thing. Why did he want him to say 5?

@1ownjoo2 Just like in the infamous Room 101 and 2 + 2 = 5 sequences in George Orwell's novel 1984.
