Its not as easy as choosing to go mainstream. It doesn't even matter if you're a great singer now. This guy is an amazing singer, he's got mad talent. But if a record label doesn't see him as "marketable," then they wont want him. I think he is marketable. But they're the ones to risk all the money.

On the contrary...I know we are all entitled to our opinion but I think this cover is indicative of why Airto's style is so special. When I heard the original I was NOT impressed. The fact Airto could make something so beautiful out of it deserves much kudos. It's one of my favourite interpretations of his. Can't stop listening to it.
