im 12 now and as everyones listing to rap i'm trying to spread this kind of stuff around. so its very rarley i even see kids who know who rush is but best band ever
@FlyByNight1975 Definately...Caress of Steel is one of Rush's greatest ever, I don't give a crap what the critics ever said about it. I bought it in the late eighties when I was 13 and wanted to kick myself for waiting as long as I did to buy it when I first heard it. I liked it more than moving pictures even and still do!?
@TheMikeysteve: It's from the official "Exit...Stage Left" DVD. If you don't have it, you need to get it NOW! It's one of the best live albums of all time (right up there with "The Song Remains the Same" by Zepp, "Made in Japan" by Deep Purple, and "All the World's a Stage" also by Rush).
Alex coaxing everything from that Gibson, Geddy putting all great Rickenbacker players (Chris Squire) to shame. And Neil, back when he had my favorite drum sound, doing his "Professor" thing.
@Rushguitarist1 i think it is just a programed sample. something that is either being controlled by one of the synth mods or perhaps by their sound guy. they used samples of pre recorded sounds from time to time. and if you listen to the studio version, those sounds are on that song. NOW the cool thing is... yeah... how would you recreate those sounds live. i would say nowadays, an expression ped, with an octave effect mixed with delay. ive done it with a line 6 m9.
@Rushguitarist1 - or.... if say YOU wanted to recreate it with out pedals... you could pre record your voice just making noises and pitch shift it octaves lower. see the song "oh yeah" by yello... as an example...
and maybe all of what i am saying is of absolutely zero help to you... and if so-
@Rushguitarist1 yeah... i know , i gotcha. but im not absolutely certain What they did there?, but it is the same sound that is used on the studio recording they did for this song. so how they re-produced it for this live bit.. im not certain- which is why i said it could be a sample or something that their sound guy triggered for them, or something else perhaps- but it is thee EXACT sound that they recorded the song with. and i was just giving you ideas how to recreate it yourself if interested
@Rushguitarist1 and actually you hear it from the time you mentioned up through the end of alex' echoed solo- its the sound of either by-tor or the snowdog.
@kaih8941 I'm referring to the part where you said, "The Rick has no balls at all". Ricks have plenty of balls, I will take a Rick over a Jazz Bass any day of the week. I mean come on, when's the last time you listened to Hemispheres? I'm not saying I don't like the jazz bass, it would be weird to hear the new stuff played on anything else, but when it comes down to playing their really old stuff (pre 80's and some stuff from the 80's) it just sounds weird to hear it played on his jazz bass.
@crazypeanut123 Correct me if I'm wrong but...Slightly over-driven Ric' ( think it was one with stereo outputs but I might be thinking of Criss Squire from Yes... so don't quote me...)bass added to the way Geddy uses his index fingernail to alternate pick the strings ("slapping without slapping"). Not a fretless.
Try playing Lee's bass lines (and singing) simultaneously, Lifeson's guitar riffs/arpeggios and solos, and finally Peart's syncopated drum rhythms. None of the above is easy to perform.
The "musicians" in many of the so-called bands of today would be completely and utterly out of their depth i.e. bands like say McFly or U2. Rush's complicated awesome music could well be described as being on a "timeless wavelength"!!
You know how, when you haven't seen your really old friends for a long time, and you finally get together with them, and it's just so natural and inspiring ... that's Rush doin' By-tor in this video. They just cut loose and let it all hang out and it's bee-yoo-tiful. It's my favorite of all their recorded performances,
Rush's road manager Howard Ungerleider came up with the title at a party. There were two dogs at the party, one a German shepherd and the other a tiny white nervous dog. Howard used to call the shepherd By-Tor because anyone that walked into the house was bitten. The other dog was a snow-dog (white). So from that night on Howard called the pair of dogs "By-Tor and the Snow Dog." The dogs belonged to Rush's manager.
just plain sick....the talent and precision on display here is beyond belief. Remember - they were barely past 20 years old when they wrote this ! The mind boggles.....Rush has been my favourite band for 30 years, and I've drawn inspiration and strength from songs all through those 30 years. Here's hoping they keep kicking ass for many years to come
@somtawyer You've really put it into perspective when you say they were barely in their 20s when they wrote this...unreal!.Most 20 year olds now want to be on "pop idol" without having to graft their way through the pub and club circuit. They want a short cut to celebrity and have no musical integrity!!.Rush are the template for how it should be done!!
Attention all planets of the solar federation, please kick the asses of the 6 idiots who disliked this so we can assume total control of this epic band. Really.....dislike??? What the heck are you watching a Rush video for anyway? Long live RUSH!!!!
OMG...Bytor and the Snowdog!!! " The Power Trio " Seen their first U.S. Tour they lost John Rutsey and entered The Professor Neil Peart! I feel blessed that I was able too see so many of their Amazing show's!
Oh man! The memories this brings back! I saw them play this at the local community college right after it came out. They had a simple platform stage set up on the gym floor, and me and my friends were sitting right in the front under Geddy's nose. My cousin who, was the biggest Rush head around, had to piss through the whole concert and held it in. We had maybe heard Bytor a few times by then. I was dying to hear it live. Energetic and trippy. . It don't get better than this.
That would have been great to see that. I wish I had been conceived a lot earlier in the 20th century to be able to see Rush live and to appreciate them as much as I do.
@cruzn246 i was in wale,s on 31 oct 1981 when i saw this unbeiiveable group only cost me 5 pounds 2 get in still got the tckt lol happy day,s were have they all gone?

THE end-all be-all of a power trio. Music would not be what it is today if it weren't for these 3 geniuses. This was also an incredible DVD and live album.
Very overlooked and underrated band. Their skills as musicians are inhuman. I believe they came from another planet to bring some sanity to the world and kick some rockin' ass along the way. Alex is an axeman par excellence. You cannot mistake Geddy's pipes from any other singer plus his bass playing is second to none. Neil's mastery of the drums is well documented...he is just not satisfied with a basic set, he has to surround himself with toms, snares, and cymbals. Jaw dropping band.
I first seen these guys at Grant Hall,Queen's University in Kingston Ontario in 1974! They opened for Nazareth! My first concert (I was 14), It was great...both bands!
@medeerbeer The full version is available in the "Replay X3" offering. This is a three-DVD set of this concert, Grace Under Pressure (1984), and A Show of Hands from 1989. Hope this helps!
Someone said:most underrated band. They are the best band everrrrrrrr! Their music is for those ones which know meaning of good sound. And they will rock forever!

Rush are still proving to be one of the best three-piece outfits out there especially in the live arena.
They are still plying their trade with grace and a smile which is really good to see.

Thanks a trillion times, one of the best versions of this song I never heard before! Can I get the full version?
medeerbeer 1 year ago
@medeerbeer The full version is available in the "Replay X3" offering. This is a three-DVD set of this concert, Grace Under Pressure (1984), and A Show of Hands from 1989. Hope this helps!

Those 3 little drum solos at the end are some of Neil's best work.

The Rickenbaker was only played on a few albums. The Fender is really his main bass.
