I have one just like this. Starts second kick every time. Only 2800 miles. Original tires, pretty dry rotted. Ride around the block every year or so. Had one for a few years in the 70's and found this one about 20 years ago. Would sell maybe.
I have a 1973 125 Yamaha Enduro, and I was wondering how fast can you go on your 360? My little 125 tops out at 35 MPH, and was thinking about getting a bigger engine for it.
@Bozzmancommeth plug gap maybe. i know it sounds stupid but at higher RPM it can happen. especially if its too short. it could also be too rich of a mixture causing a fouling. or even points gap. trial and error. :)
Cool bike, we just had a big gathering of old Yamaha Enduros in California. The Event was called Enduro Fest 2010 we put up some vids. PM me for links or if you are interested in attending the next one! We are planning a ride on the East Coast now!
can this be street legal. i got some what of a basket case of a 400 in a friends barn for over 30yrs, and been wanting to restore it, except it was made for flat track racing.
For a beginner, how hard are these to fix up and restore if its a complete? I found a pair of barn finds that have been sitting for 20 years thought i might give it a try...
@dan0champ old bikes from the 60s 70s are WAY easy! the parts are heavy duty and available with out too much hell along the way. :) im in the prosess or restoring a puch maxi and helped my neighbor restore his DT250. mind that its time consuming and will take LOTS of patience to get it perfect. :) best of luck dude.
Did you add the passenger seat that attaches to the carrier or is it something that you were able to order from somewhere? I am trying to find one for my '71 AT 125 and can't seem to find one anywhere, aftermarket or original. Any help on finding one would be much appreciated.
i had one for a minute.paid over 200.00 for new top end.i unhooked the oil injection and mixed the gas 4 ounces to a gallon.i thought i was ready to ride.i could not get it to run.oil from the crank case was getting in the cylinder.i took a loss on that. same thing happened with a 1975 dt 250 i picked up.i would give the 74 360 another shot but never a 75 dt 250.i'll stick to a 1973 and 1974 dt 250's and thats about it.
My brothers friend had one of these in 74. I believe this is the best yamaha enduro 2 stroke ever made in the 70's. They were fast, they started easy and they had the auto lube. My brother bought the first XT 500 sold in Southern California in 1976 and was he ever pleased!. His friend who owned the 360 was finally getting beat by another enduro. The Xt was not easy to start, but it was an incredible bike. Very quick off the line, but too heavy for fun off-road. He still has the gas tank.LOL
hi i live in australia n.s.w and i own a dt360a and i put a 1974 dt250a magneto so it runs on points not CDI i wreckon thats a cheaper solution to spending heaps on CDI parts has any one else done this
My Dad went to a Yamaha dealer in 72 to look at enduro bikes. The guy that worked there suggested the DT360 and he rode it down the street on the back wheel through all of it's gears. This made my Dad afraid to buy it. After a little more thinking, he bought it.
the black box is under the left plastic side cover. Without it you cannot run this. It is a 1974 electronic module brain. Like I said anyone who has ever owned or repaired several of these call this the worlds worst yamaha ever made. Another problem is that when you kick start it there is a wire that releases some compression in the front to make it start easier. Those are problematic and need to be welded shut.
I am happy that yours works. I just had major bad luck with the 360 in general. The black models tear your foot off when starting and the green model this year is known for the cdi issue.
I did own 3 of these '74s and I am just talking from personal experience. I remember some racers in the desert would carry a spare cdi. They are 300 bucks now on ebay.
I do not mean to disparage this motorcycle but where I live we all had major problems with the cdi's
One thing that can cause those problems is a dirty magneto/stator assembly. I had a DT400 that had a horribly corroded assembly, and it was causing me a ton of problems. When I cleaned it up and timed the bike properly, the kickback was gone, starting was immediate and it ran much better.
Memories, my first real dirt bike. That old 360 bulletproof!

But if this bike has a cdi unit , you could use one from a newer bike if the pickup coil has the same resistance.

This is an unfixable bike with a black box that goes out without notice that cost 400 if you can find it

That "black box" is a CDI unit. If you are blowing those, I'm guessing something is wrong with the magneto of the bike.
The compression release can be swapped out with a manual one, but I never had problems with mine.
