See, I've always seen the Star Sapphire's costume design as they *did* say something about the character, or rather the corps. The Violet Lantern Corps/Star Sapphires embody the kind of crazy, obsessive/possessive love (read: infatuation) that drive people to dress up in absurd hyper sexualized outfits to try to "win" the object of their affection/obsession.
Now, honestly, that's a bad message, given that they're trying to make them heros, but it's there, and it's the way they corps still is.
One of the reasons for the drab colours, was that they had were filiming in colour but knowing the majority of the audience would watch in Black and White. So they had a filter that would show how it would look in B&W and they chose colours that looked like colours in B&W. Thus they look kind of drab in real colour.
I love this show, costume design can either make or break a character. So critiques like this are very important for costume designers or graphic/comic book artists.
I love these videos of Jennifer and Alan alongside Tim Gunn. He offers such great insight into the costume design of heroes from comics and sci-fi. With their discussion on the Wonder Woman outfit, I wouldn't be surprised that Jim Lee's last two designs on the WW costume (the JMS "written" run and the DCnU 52 revamp) were decided by a committee that have no concept of who the character is, how she is portrayed, and what the fans really want.
Actually, according to Nichelle Nichols, the women were fine with the skirts. Now they look ridiculous, but apparently back then it was supposed to be liberating. Women weren't supposed to show that much leg so the fact that they could do so was very 'modern'.
@Mistahealy As explained in the video, this is the first of many discussions and people had written in about our previous video team-ups and asked us about certain viewpoints on gender so it seemed an excellent opportunity to discuss it.
I am so impressed with this series! I subscribed because of the psychology episodes you had, but I'm loving these as well. I would LOVE to hear Tim's thoughts on Harley Quinn's costumes, particularly the original harlequin costume vs. the reboot design. Anyway, can't wait for next week's episode!!
This is an incredible series you have developed. Listening Tim Gunn, Alan, Jennifer discuss and articulate all of these themes and ideas that swim around in these dearly held visual mediums is a rewarding experience. It really helps bring to light how the aesthetics influence our perception. Thank you for the time you take to put these panels together.
I do think that, in this day and age, artists do have to think about how costumes will translate into other media. A property has to be versatile. An image signature that makes little or no sense when brought into another medium is a serious obstacle to its broader success.
@Hydrophidian Don´t really agree there. To make the suit work in a different media or retool it is the work and responsibility of the team handling that adaptation. As has been shown with videogames and many other outlets of pop-culture, isf you try to make something to "fit all" you miss out on the fully realized potetntial of a spezialised package for a certain audience and media. On adaption shouldn´t have to make compromises to be easier for adaption.
I would *really* like to see Tim Gunn's feedback on Aaron Diaz's re-imaginings of DC's iconic characters. Particularly his take on Wonder Woman.
There have been so many attempts to restyle her, and I haven't liked any of them. However, I think Diaz, with his effort, has struck gold. While I'm not sold on the idea of taking the statue thing more literally, the costume itself is, in my view, pretty much perfect.
loved this one. can't wait to see what Tim says about the TNG, Voy, DS9 jumpsuits lol maybe get Jennifer to comment on how in the first season they just would not leave Janeway's hair alone
Jennifer you're hot!

If they really wanted to go realistic with superhero costumes, everyone would be wearing something like a SWAT uniform. Boring.
But I'll admit it works for the Punisher and the current Venom.

Great video, but the most striking thing about it is HOLY CRAP Jennifer Ewing is smoking hot. Extremely attractive woman.

Always a delight to see Tim Gunn getting his geek on... Lord knows how he would react to the some of the New 52 redesigns
Especially the likes of Harley Quinn and Starfire in light of this discussion

Are we going to hear about the rest of Trek, too? I'd love to hear his thoughts on Troi or 7 of 9 or the skant!

Why did you only talk about Star Trek for like three minutes?

I'd love to see what Tim Gunn would create if he had to design his own super hero costume.
