what was Bobby Rahal doin in the stands, ha not really, the guy in the black cap looks like him. Those safety guys were at the scene before anyone could even see WTF happened...
I get a kick out of the dufus who shouts "too balled up, too bunched up." Every Indy 500 has people like this, spread throughout the stands, all the way around the race track, who say goody, nerdy things from an hour and half before the race, all through the event, and at the Steak & Shake six hours later.
As I recall he had pretty serious injuries to his legs and feet too. The cars made contact in such a way that the tub of Fox's car was split into two pieces and on the TV replays you could actually see Fox's legs protruding outside of the broken tub.
Yes it was and I cannot understand such a childish reaction. Everyone knows what sort of shunts can be expected at Indy, so when it DOES happen, NO one should holler "O MY GOD!" Fucking lightweights.
That was the 2nd worst day of my life at IMS because I had to help clean up the accident and while we was putting Stan on the stretcher his helmet fell in two pieces in my hand and I though he was dead!
He did not die from this accident. Stan suffered a severe closed-head wound, but recovered. He had no memory of the accident, and actually would autograph photos of it for fans. He never raced again. In 2000, he died in a traffic accident in New Zealand.
at indy, theturn have no apron, but an inside access road that has about 8 feet of grass between them. Stan ran the front tires in the grass and spun into the car above him, (I believe Eddie Cheever) and was turned from fcing inside to outside then hitting the wall.
I have a really good video of the race and you can see he gets loose and his left front touches the grass. It rained all morning and if you look really close you can see that the instant before he begins to veer towards the wall, mud sprays off the left tire. The same thing almost happened a year later when Mark Dismore lost it in the exact same spot when he touched the grass/mud on the inside, only he spun to the inside and touched nothing because he was going much slower.
excellant video!the highlight for me was the woman at about 1.18 shouting 'OH MY GOD!' Not surprised tho tbh, twas an immence crash. thanks for sharing it dude.
Actually, I think the "expert" fellow who said "Jam the brakes!" is even funnier.
Sadly Stan was hurt pretty bad in this accident, but lived to tell the tale. He says he had no memory of the accident, and actually joked about it (he used to autograph photos of it for fans). Sadly he was killed in a traffic accident a few years later.
i was at that race. infeild of turn three. i missed fox's wreck, so i was confuzed as to why to feild was slow again, but when i got home and saw the video i was totally amazed
if u have a video of the race i never got to see the race if u could e-mail me i could give u my home address and u can record me a copy of the race i would appricate it
ABC television didn't even get a good view of the accident. Had I been in the deck seats at the time (this is from the bench seats...row NN), the view would not have been as obstructed by other people. Such is life.

The amazing thing is how things can change in just a few seconds from utter excitement to "Oh my God!" and shock.

I love how you can hear Tom Carnegie on the PA. What a terrible crash.

Only deserves 2 or 3 stars because of poor video quality and you can't actually see much.

There's a slightly better quality version posted as the Video Response.

The last entertaining Indy 500. Very sad. Screw Tony George

Wow - what a video. We were in the PPH and just saw a car rip the fence up and thought it was a fatality for sure.
What happened? No one will ever know. Stan was a veteran driver and most really doubt that he got loose and over-corrected, but who knows...

What happend? Did they just come out of turn one and lose themselves. Did any of them roll by any chance, the damage looked very brutal?
