there's speculation that no one was the walrus, but there's another theory that john originally saw the beatles as the walrus, perpetrators of the idea that the rockstars had all the answers, basically lying to their fans. then by the white album, john had removed himself from that but he still believed paul was perpetrating the same lies, which is why in "glass onion" he says "the walrus was paul".

John was the walrus, whatever that means, it doesn't matter, him saying the walrus was paul in glass onion was just a way of messing with the people who were looking into things that weren't important. He was messing with the same kind of people who were all obsessive with the Paul is dead thing, and it just made stupid people and fans get all hung up on it. I suppose he must've been entertained by it.
