Sutherland -a dramatic coloratura soprano;Dessay-a lyric coloratura soprano. In der holle rache,Sutherland has it transposed down.Conversely, some of the low notes and dessay cant get down there. As well, different eras, diff acting expectations from producers and audiences.Still, Id rather be lifting Dessays, marie when she sings that end note in the horizontal position;Hernias all round for those guys in the Dames 1962 production, hahaha john from sydney
mmm ...... must be considered that Sutherland's voice is (she still lives) very big , a voice controlled with a technique very, very refined, with the power to sing any role in the opera, beginning Wagner until the bel canto
Natalie's voice can only perform a given repertoire
This isn't from the Met, it's the Royal Opera in London. I know because I'm in it and can see myself in the clip. The London actors did not travel with the show.

To me Natalie Dessay, along with Joyce DiDonato and of course Anna Netrebko are the faces of diva singing in the 2lst century, Renee Fleming not withstanding. Dawn Upshaw is still my very, very favorite diva. But there are so many great divas, aren't there?

She is simply ASTOUNDING! I simply can't fathom how she ever gets that energy, singing and leaping all about! The fact she can do both is astounding but the fact the music doesn't fail is mind-blowing! Stunning as always!
I completely agree with you Wotansings. Some very ugly singing, forced humor (not funny, at least to me), like a monster doll on drugs, just coarse jumping around. She is purely serving herself, not the character or the music.
I think it's someone else from the chorus or Alessandro Corbelli who sings at this particular moment with a dark voice. Probably Florez is not loud enough to show his TENOR voice here. But he has a wonderful high note at the end.
Whoops, accidently marked your other comment as spam. Maybe EmiMusicFrance can fix that? Anyway, he sings "salut à la gloire" solo, then the chorus joins in, so it's definitely him.
I wouldn't pay too much attention to this "deatil"... maybe Florez has the ambitions for a baritone^^ (Carlo Bergonzi who sang first in his career baritone roles changed later to tenor roles.)But Juan Diego Florez is definitely a tenor.
I can't wait for the release of this DVD. It's one of the best opera productions I've ever seen. Excellent singers, a wonderful staging and of course Donizetti's beautiful music!!!
I don't think that she encourages him to do the high note, because in general a singer has to know at the latest in the dress rehearsal, what he can do vocally.
Ah, I don't concur. They most likely rehearsed both and had a plan of two options depending on how they feel by the end of the show each night - the high option (here) and a low option for if they were tired or sick - singers do this all the time!!!! They would rehearse both options and just go with the flow on the night.

Not only is she a brilliant opera singer but also a fantastic actress. Such a pretty combination.

She's always been better than Sutherland. Can you imagine Sutherland skipping along whilst producing perfect vocal lines? LOL

Natalie Dessay is the opera goddess. She is of the same caliber as my other favorite Joan Sutherland.

Florez sounds a little weird at 2:21 when he's saying "salut à la gloire" - like he's a baritone or something.

Nope, it's him. He sings the same line in the Vienna production, and you can see him move his mouth to it here.
